Wearing compression stockings in the parks? My DH is self-conscious.

I was going to suggest very lightweight pants, but another poster beat me to it! You could probably find them at a store like Dick's Sporting Goods or Gander Mountain. I don't think many people at WDW would even notice the socks, but it he's really self conscious about it, he could have the pants as an alternative.

2 stories to tell him.....

My niece's husband is a farmer who also drives a semi. When they came down to see us, we went to the beach after eating dinner. He was wearing his jeans, boots and a long sleeve western shirt just like he always wears up North.
2 days later we met them at the Magic Kingdom to get them in free. There he was wearing those boots.........but he had gone to K-Mart in New Smyrna Beach and bought scissors and cut the jeans so they were now cut-offs. The man had the skinniest white-never seen the sun in his life legs and he had the time of his life at the parks. Not one person laughed or even seemed to notice his clothes.....

Another story..... think bike week Daytona but this took place at a beach farther South. Imagine 2 rugged bikers in leather jackets with long hair and beards at water's edge . The men were having a blast trying to keep their boots dry as each wave came in. Then we noticed one of them was carrying a woman's purse. There wasn't a woman in site and all we thought was how cute is that? LOL Later his wife came walking up with a bunch of shells. What a sweatheart to carry her purse for her so she could have fun at the beach too.

No one will care if your husband wears compression socks. It is sort of a Florida thing for mature men to wear socks with their sandals. You see this in the stores a lot.

Honestly, no one is interested in what other people are wearing. Everyone is so wrapped up in their own stuff that they won't even notice that your husband is there, let alone what kind of socks he's wearing.

At any rate, anyone who would make fun of something another person is clearly wearing for medical reasons.....well...what's their opinion worth to you? Not much, I'd think. I sure wouldn't waste a moment's thought on them.

If he is truly worried, get him a few pair of loose fitting, breathable pants so the socks won't show. Maybe from an outdoors store, who may have pants with special design to stay cool. If he is going to be very self conscious, he is going to need pants like that for the summer - Disney or no Disney.

I'm guessing he's really into shorts then? If he is really freaked out and can't get over the idea, he could invest in some nice, thin, breathable pants. Then he wouldn't have to worry at all. Anything in a Poplin/Cotton/Linen would be just as comfortable in the June heat as shorts.

That's exactly what I was thinking. There are other options for pants other than jeans.

I know that I personally would not be able to wear shorts with those socks, and I personally would need to wear pants. I think my husband would feel the same. We're both just about your husband's age. So I would look into the lightweight options for pants, if it's really bothering him!

I saw a woman wearing a miniskirt and fishnets and heels when we went in December. Honestly after that, nothing looks weird to me! :rotfl: But honestly people dressed inappropriately like that are really the only people I even notice. Plus like a PP said I wore Crocs with socks and it doesn't get much worse in the embarrassing department!

As a Nurse, I would not even give this a second thought. I have seen to many bad outcomes when patients do not follow suggested treatment. A DVT is very serious, as you know, you do not want to be in a bad situation any time, but especially at Disney! They do have the flesh tone stockings, but why not make them fun. If you have kids let them right something about Disney, or mickey heads, on them with fabric markers. When at Disney, We are All Kids!!!

I'm sorry he feels worried about this. I think the other suggestions of nude colored ones or pants are good.

I just wanted to say that there is a man who comes into my store who has to wear compression stockings all the time. He bought tie dye rainbow ones and he wears them with khaki shorts. He says that he thinks if you have to wear them, WEAR them!

No! My 3 year old daughter has to wear one because she had the same problem - her right leg swells up to about 2 to 6 times the size of her left. I wouldn't laugh at all. I would recognize it but would never ever laugh.

And honestly while walking through the parks I don't really look around to see what other people are wearing. I'm too into being there with my kids and having a great time.

I love this!

Tell him he's not alone and he shouldn't worry at all! In 2009 I was hit by a car while walking, and had to have significant plastic surgery on my right leg. To protect myself from the sun and also to deal with all the walking one does in the World, I wear these compression sleeves made by Zensah.
I've gone on 5 solo trips since the accident, and no one really cares...maybe the occasional lingering look from children "mommy that man has a boo boo!" but mostly it was never an issue.

Another to chime in for him to wear them and don't give it a second thought!

A) looking a little weird (but it won't be weird at WDW anyway) is so much easier to deal with than a pulmonary embolus.

B) compression gear is getting quite popular with athletes, too...lots of compression gear being worn around marathon and triathlon venues, year-round.

Have a great trip!

editing to add: if you haven't tried them (a light compression for people who don't need them for medical reasons), they really feel good, either walking around, or after a long day at the parks! Also, on the plane...not a bad idea if you're going to sit a while.

My dad has worn them our last 5 trips. No one even blinks an eye over them. I will say that on our first trip he was a little embarrassed as well, but since that first trip he had to wear them, he's never given them a second thought! Just another pair of socks for him.:goodvibes

My husband was diagnosed with a DVT last summer, and things are going fine now. However, he really needs to wear knee-high compression stockings or his legs swell and ache. His vascular surgeon and hematologist both told him to plan on wearing compression stockings on at least the DVT leg for the rest of his life.

DH is 41. We are planning on going to WDW again next June. He is embarrassed to wear shorts because of the compression stockings. Please tell me that NO ONE is going to laugh or make fun of him because he has a medical need to wear the stockings on his legs while walking through the parks. I have told him that no one will care, but he seems to think we will spend every day in the parks surrounded by jeering crowds pointing at his legs. I don't want him to swelter in jeans every day in June because he is so self-conscious about the stockings.

Today he said "Maybe you can check on that Disney forum you're always one, see what they think about it." So, would you guys laugh at a nice nerdy 41 year old man with knee high nude compression stockings on his legs at Disney World?

So, I'm trying to think up one "funny" outfit I saw on a guest after the two dozen or so trips I've taken.

You know some thing I really can't remember even noticing much. I do remember a few young adults who had on shorts that left nothing and I mean nothing to the imaginatin but out side of that. I really don't notice what people have on.

My BIL had to wear big knee braces on both knees while we were at WDW and he wore them with shorts and no one ever said a word to him nor did he ever feel like anyone was staring.

He'll be fine - I know it's weird to get used to having to wear them, but he will feel weirder about it than anyone else. It'll be okay!

As previous posters said, his health is much more important than worrying if a few people snicker at him. Just tell him not to wear black ones with sandals! ;)

He could always "Disney" them up by drawing some Mickey heads on them with a Sharpie. But, honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. Just celebrate that he is still with you and enjoy your trip!

I think it's much weirder when I see women wearing high heels in the parks. UGH!

Look into buying 2 pair of zip off hiking pants. That way your husband can start of the day in pants and if the heat is to much, he can zip the legs off and they become shorts.
Depending on the fabric, they also dry quick. He can ride Kali River Rapids and be dry after riding Expedition Everest. The pockets typically have zippers or Velcro to help keep items from falling out.

Also, there are a lot of people that have health issues that are more obvious, that thanks to modern medican, can enjoy WDW. He will not be alone and will easily blend in with the crowd.

I wouldn't even notice it. We're too busy doing our own thing to worry about what others are doing/wearing.

Paint black mickey heads all over them and people will think he is just really into disney. If you really loved him, you (and everyone else in your party) would wear them too. :lmao:

Seriously, have you seen some of the outfits people wear?
Tan compression stocking are very benign!

LOVE this idea! I think this would be fabulous! hahaha! :lmao:
