Now for the rest of the story (can you tell DH is on duty tonight and I don't have anything better to do.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- A new state law went on the books Tuesday saying people could bring guns to work if they kept them locked in their car. Disney, though, said it was exempt from the new law and its 62,000 employees needed to keep their guns at home.

Friday, a worker who protested the park’s decision told Channel 9 he was suspended.


The worker was well aware that he could end up losing his job when he took the gun to work Friday morning, but said that the principle at stake means enough to him that he was willing to take the risk, especially on the day we celebrate the country and our freedoms.

As he pulled into work, Edwin Sotomayor recorded Sheriff’s Deputies and Disney managers waiting for him. After he refused a car search, managers drove Sotomayor to their offices, questioned him further and then sent him to his normal post. Four hours into his shift, Sotomayor says he was suspended.


Disney told employees it is exempt from the new law that allows them to bring a gun to work, because it stores fireworks on site.

Disney told Channel 9 he was suspended because he wouldn’t cooperate with their investigation. They also said he could be fired for carrying the gun, which he says is about safety on his ride to work.


Sotomayor says he’s willing to be the test case for the new law, even if it means losing his job and going to work.

Disney is investigating the case internally. While Disney employee files are confidential, sources day Sotomayor has been disciplined by Disney in the past. Sotomayor insists he is testing this law on his own and hasn’t been contacted by groups like the NRA.

I have some familiarity with this case due to another, separate case, we were were working on....

He was talking/bragging about bringing it, how they "couldn't stop him", blah blah, and he was reported.....in short, his big mouth got him in trouble...

OK. Here's a serious question.

I'm a law-abiding citizen from NC and I have my CCP. We have reciprocity with FL and all the states I drive through on the way to WDW.

I-95 isn't the friendly place it used to be, for those of you unfamiliar with the drive. LOL

Someone mentioned above that (I think this is right) Disney property was designated, esentially; as a no-carry zone by FL law.

So if (and I'm not confessing to anything here) I were to carry my sidearm on my trip and lock it in the safe in my villa as soon as I arrive and never retrieve it until I was ready to leave on the trip back home, I would be violating a FL law? Is that correct? That is RIDICULOUS.

So Disney wants to be libel for my family's safety while en-route to WDW since they essentially tell me that I can't carry my weapon on my trip because I can't store it on property once I arrive? Sorry, but I have to call hogwash. There's no way Disney can tell me that I can't legally store my weapon on property while I'm there.

I know this is OT but it's important to me and not totally irrelavent to the discussion at hand.

Keep in mind that I am not even talking about the theme parks or other areas. I'm talking about the parking lot at my villa and to the room and back to my vehicle. That's all.

For the record, I would never even consider taking my weapon anywhere on property other than my room's safe. I just want to make that perfectly clear.

For the record, you can't carry concealed in NC anywhere tickets are sold to enter a venue, whether alcohol is being sold or not. I'm pretty sure I remember that right so theme parks would be out by definition here in NC.

I'm going to put on my common sense hat here.......

If you're worried about leaving it in the safe and forgetting about it..get one of these:

Secures via cable in your car, under the seat...I have one in my truck...

That way, no worries, and you don't have to worry about it in the resort...

I'm also going to say that Disney probably doesn't care, nor want to know about, what people carry to and from their homes to the resorts...especially if it's secured in your car---I mean, they will tell you they're not responsible for items left in vehicles--and they aren't, nor should they be.

I'm ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN, they would care about it being left on a bed, bedside table, or forgotten in a safe.........or maybe waving it around in the Food Court when they run out of cupcakes

Disney didn't suspend him for having a gun on property but rather for refusing to cooperate with the investigation. In this day of 10%+ unemployment his move wasn't a brilliant one.

to answer your OP, no, they don't have metal detectors at the park entrances, only visual/hand searches of your bags...

as to the rest of your post, if your opinion of american gun ownership is based on michael moore "films", i'll let you in on a little secret...michael moore is a ultra-left wing loonie nut job...on a good day...despite what you see in the movies, not everyone in the USA is walking around packing heat...

all the NRA (aka the "gun lobby") does is work to protect americans right to gun ownership as guaranteed in our constitution...gun ownership was never a guaranteed right in australia, and as such, when the government decided to take it away, it did...

Ain't gonna happen. Reading between the lines is not necessary with my post(s). I pretty much lay it on the line.

Speaking of Disney and weapons, anyone remember when the rifles and pistols sold at Frontierland and Adventureland used to be made of wood and metal instead of plastic?

Sure, they were TOY rifles and pistols, but to a 7 year old boy, those were muzzle loading buffalo rifles

And is it true that they took down the air pressure dummy guns at Tom Sawyers fort? Haven't been out there in 20 years or more.

FWIW, the alcohol restriction supposedly is limited to a dedicated bar seating area or where a bartender could reach out and hand you a drink. So the vender kiosks and general seating areas of a restaurant, much less the entire property, wouldn't apply. I've never liked that limitation on permits, at least in Texas we had the 51% rule which clarified it a bit (and they banned carry at fixed amusement parks as well).

Disneys stance is pretty clear, if they catch you then only unpleasant things will happen, though I'm willing to bet that if you walked up to the security office at the ticket center each morning and checked your pistol and ammunition they would secure it with a smile and never raise an issue about it. But I can understand their trepidation about firearms in the park since one incident of a gun left in the bathroom or falling off a ride and landing in the wrong hands would be catastrophic. And given the generally poor quality of firearm safety education in America, much less in countries where firearms are even less prevalent, I can see their concern.

You are, after all, talking to the guy who jumped out on a Felony Car Stop when his pistol was locked in his desk drawer (I was a detective and had been in the jail, which meant my gun had to be secured----for about 6 months guys were leaving slingshots in/on/around my desk and car...LOL)

Each Park and Resort at WDW has an on-premises alcohol license which covers the specific property. (There is one for MK, as it is available for after-hours private parties). Also the Resorts, and at least Epcot, have off-premises sales licenses as you are able to purchase sealed bottles.
