We were DOWNGRADED...is this typical?!!!

So sorry that happened to you! I had something happen like that to slightly the same effect--but not the same. I had booked (through a third party) what I thought was a dancing waters view at the Disneyland Hotel (overlooking that water show) and when I checked in we were in a standard room. I asked about a water view and they said it was 50$ more a night and that my room rate was a standard view. So basically, we weren't exactly downgraded, it was a glitch with the travel company we'd made the ressies with. Still, it's too bad when you are expecting (and think you have paid for) one view and end up with a standard. Hope your next trip goes better!

I've never heard of a guest being downgraded, unless the wanted to do such upon check in. I hope you recieved the monetary credit for the difference.

This is usually how it works. Say we have 3 room categories, Standard, Deluxe, and Concierge. CRO will overbook the Standard rooms, but not the upper two. Those staying in Deluxe will be upgraded to Concierge, creating openings in Deluxe. The overbookings in Standard will then be upgraded to Deluxe to fill the empty spots. (They base upgrades on how much you paid for the room, as well as dates... the more you pay, the better the chance, also, if your dates fit a hole that they have.) Using this system, everyone should be happy.

That is very interesting. I always wondered if there was some rhyme-and-reason to the upgrades.
Funny but the only time I got an upgrade was before I found the DIS (1997) and paid full price for a package. I think I understand why now.. :scratchin

I had a pin code for music this weekend and got an unsolicited upgrade. I think it was only b/c the building was allegedly closed while the woman next to me got a downgrade.

I have gotten upgraded each time at WL--mostly b/c we check in early and they want to give us a room then and it is always the upgraded views that are available.

I have never heard of being downgraded..... I'd be upset too, I don't think you are over-reacting. I wouldn't have let it spoil my vacation, but I would certainly convey my displeasure to the Powers That Be. Good Luck & I hope you get an apology at the least....

Too bad it soured CSR for you, it's actually a very nice resort. Although I don't blame you for being disappointed in it from your experience.....

m&m's mom - I TOTALLY agree! On the first trip where we took our kids (Oct. 2002) pre-disboards (for the most part), we paid rack rate for a 2 bedroom villa at the Beach Club Villas - makes me shudder at the thought! I think our rate was somewhere in the neighborhood of $700/night with tax. When we checked in, we were upgraded to the Presidential Suite for our 5 night stay. It was WONDERFUL and very unexpected, but since I'll never pay rack rate again, I'll never see it again.

I truly had never heard of anyone being down-graded before though. That's a little disturbing!

CSR has suites. They should have upgraded you to a suite when they had no waterview left. That would have been the smart thing to do.

A suite??? That would have been great!! And I'm seeing some posts now about people being upgraded before they even get to the resort...and we got stuck in a standard?!! :confused3 We had a great vacation in spite of being downgraded and we loved our stay at Pop but after reading all these replies I'm disappointed I didn't ask for a manager. I'll at least send them a letter so they know they have an unhappy guest and if it ever happens again I'll be sure to get us in a room of equal or better value even if it means them moving us to another resort...of course, it will probably never happen again now!!

I have the address/fax # for CSR but I want to cc the letter to someone else of importance at Disney so that hopefully my letter doesn't just get tossed aside...does anyone have a suggestion as to who else I should send it to at Disney? Is there a central manager of all the resorts?

Did you get there pretty late in the day? Am I correct in assuming that the earlier you check in, the more likely you are to get what you requested? Not that you deserve to be downgraded just for checking in later, of course! Just wondering how this plays out depending on time of day.

I would have asked for an upgrade to a deluxe resort. I think they would have honored that if necessary. Definitely write a letter or send an e-mail. They should do something to make it up to you.

I dont think she "requested" a waterview. I think she reserved and paid for a waterview.

We have reservations at CSR next week and we paid for a waterview.

We got there at about 2:30 and I'm sure a lot of people had already checked in already but at 2:30 it seems like there still had to have been a lot of people that hadn't arrived yet. But even if I was the last one to check in and they oversold the waterview rooms why didn't I get upgraded?!! I'm thinking so much more logically now that it's too late!! Oh well, live and learn!! :)

At 2:30 in the afternoon, there is NO reason to be downgraded. I would recommend sending your letter to the General Manager of Coronado... however, I do not know that persons name. He or she can address the concerns with the front office staff to make sure something like this doesn't happen to anyone else.

I'm so sorry you were downgraded and I would complain about it. What is the point of paying for a particular view/room and then losing it when you get there? :confused3

Yeah, that's ridiculous. I might understand it if you had checked in at 11:00 pm, and they had decided you weren't coming (I'd still think it was the wrong thing to do, but it would make more sense). But to be so overbooked that your reserved (thanks for the reminder jayhawksfan) room type wasn't available at 2:30? Insane.

So sorry this happened to you. I would have been furious... I could see my DH now. He would quickly step aside and let me do my thing. See, I am one of those "its the principle of the matter" type people!! :rolleyes1

Thanks for the contact name - I'll be typing up my letter of complaint this weekend.

We've stayed at CSR twice and while we didn't get downgraded, we thought the service was very poor both times and we probably wouldn't go back there. The first time was our wedding, we wanted our guests close together and we requested two rooms next to each other, preferably on the first floor, because my father was handicapped (well, actually, he had to have angioplasty 2 weeks before our wedding so we were relieved he could even go) and that way my sister could help my mom. Didn't request a building or anything, just please keep our family fairly close together -- about 9 rooms -- with one set of two rooms next to each other. Well, our family was literally spread all over the resort. Meanwhile ASMu and OKW had no problem keeping those rooms close together! ASMu actually placed the 5 guests we had there all in a row.

Also, we requested a wheelchair from CSR -- I called in advance and they said no problem. When we got there, they were all broken!!! WL -- which we were moving to for our honeymoon -- came through like gangbusters and delivered a wheelchair to us at CSR.

On the second occassion, we check in at around 1 p.m. and got a room right away, but it was a smoking room even though we'd requested non-smoking. It was value season and the place was DEAD! So we called the front desk to be moved and when we got to the next room, it was still dirty. Back to the front desk again and they said we'd have to come back after 3 p.m. So we moved out luggage back-and-forth to the car 3 times that day! I was SOOOO tired!!!

When you're "walked" to another hotel the normal compensation is one night free. AFAIK concerned you either should have been upgraded, to another resort if necessary, or you should have been comped. Hotels overbook but guests are entitled to compensation. Reduction of the room rate to the standard room rate is not compensation.
