Police: Boyfriend Driven Into Lake

WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. -- A West Bloomfield father was charged with malicious destruction of property Friday after police said he drove his teen daughter's boyfriend's vehicle into a lake after he found the two in the backseat.

Police said the Jan. 3 incident occurred on the 6400 block of Leytonstone Boulevard at about 1:30 a.m.

The man's 14-year-old daughter and her 16-year-old boyfriend allegedly drove the boy's 2010 Dodge Charger to a beach near Pleasant Lake and parked there.

The father told police that he pulled his van up alongside the Charger and saw the teens in the backseat of the car.

Police said the father lost his cool and pulled his daughter out of the vehicle and jumped in the driver's seat. He then allegedly drove the vehicle onto the icy lake and left it there -- with the boy still in the backseat.
The father allegedly left the boy in the car and drove away with his daughter.
The boy told police that he got in the front seat and tried to drive the car off the ice, but the but the front left tire had already sunk into the ice - making it impossible to move the vehicle.

The boy was still on the ice when police arrived. The teen was not injured and a tow truck pulled it out of the icy water the next day.

These stories kill me. Clearly the precious innocent daughter didn't want to be there at all and it was all the boyfriend's fault. I can't believe that's all he was charged with.

There was a story a while back about a dad who shot his daughter's boyfriend because he "thought" she was being attacked even though she screamed "no, dad, he's my boyfriend".

Are parents really this stupid?

Omg! I thought he drove the EMPTY car into the lake which would have been bad enough. But to still have the boyfriend in it? And in the back seat? I hope they charge him big time. If that car went through the ice, the boyfriend could have died. Unbelievable.

He's really lucky he didn't kill the poor kid

I think he was just out of his mind angry. This boy is lucky he didn't get physically assaulted.

We have teen dd's and I know my dh would NOT be rational if he found one of our dd's in a compromising postion like that.

Well, no one got hurt, so this story just made me laugh. Guess I'm weird :rotfl2: I bet the boy will think twice before going parking again!

This happened not far from my parents house.

People are crazy. To me, it seems as though it takes TWO to tango, and his daughter is just as guilty. It doesn't appear the boyfriend dragged her at gunpoint.

My DH is a cop and would have charged the father with attempted murder. He is darn lucky he got off so easily.

And I am sure the parents of the boy are wishing they hadn't let their son take out their brand new car that night! I read in the West Bloomfield Beacon that the car had 500 miles on it! That's good ol' WB ego for you! :rotfl:

Maybe it would be difficult to be rational, but the chances are good that the girl played an equal part in this. I remember (quite fondly, in fact :lovestruc) going parking with my high school boyfriend.

That guy is very lucky the boy was not injured and that he isn't being charged with attempted murder.

But the thing is people need to be rational. At the very least, they can't go assaulting people and destroying property, and if they do, there's no excuse...they should be charged. (Mother of now 21 and 19 year old DDs here.) And seriously, our issue would be AT LEAST as much with our DD.
My DH is a cop and would have charged the father with attempted murder.
Would that be up to your DH to do?

DS (16) took a girl to Winter Ball, and drove his car. The girl's father, a cop, took him aside and told him "Drive like I'm sitting in the seat next to you" and then showed him a picture of himself in uniform...with guns...next to his police car. :) I think DS was an especially good driver, and good boy, that night.

If he was the officer handling that call, absolutely it would. Now, whether or not the prosecutor would agree to those charges is another story. But when my DH heard about this, he immediately said he would have tried.

I am not even a parent, and I can tell you that if someone maliciously drove my son into a frozen lake, I would want them to be charged with attempted murder.

Oh, I see. I didn't know how that all worked with charging people.

I agree with attempted murder. I DO have kids, and the danger of what that guy did and the possible outcome gives me a knot in my stomach. He should have just hauled his DD out of there, and left.

Likewise I want the 16yo charged with satutory rape.

Exactly. What if that boy, who was really only just a child at 16, wasn't in the right mind to know enought to figure out how to get OUT of the car, had it sank? If he HAD gotten out, what if he couldn't swim? What if he froze? Either way you look at it, it was a terrible decision.

I'm thinking if the father was crazy enough to act like that, he wasn't planning on letting his dd off scott free. Getting arrested probably put a kink in his plans for dealing with his dd.

But is everyone 100% sure that sex was attempted? I totally understand that if they had consentual sex, it was statutory rape. All we know is that the dad found the kids in the backseat. I doubt the prosecutor would go for that, which is why the officer didn't apply that charge, same with the attempted murder charge.

For me, it would depend on the ages of the kids, including the age difference, if they had actually had intercourse. I'm not going to throw a boy under the bus (or into icy water) for having sex with my DD, if my DD was a willing participant. I'm going to focus on getting my DD back on track with making better choices in life.

Although 16 is the legal age of consent in Michigan, it is not an adult. He cannot be charged with statutory rape for the same reason that anyone 18 and over could be charged with it, he's not considered old enough to understand the consequences of his sexual actions.

It would depend on the situation for me. For all we know this 16yo boy is a predator.

And I am not going to forever ruin a 16 year old boy's life for having consentual sex with my stupid 14 year old DD. Kids have sex. I forbid my DD from seeing this or any other boy, I have a serious talk with her, inform his parents of their activities, get my DD into the gynocologist, and hope she makes smarter decisions in the future.

I don't make a boy into a forever sex offender (and I definately don't do what THIS father did!) I have a friend who's husband is a "sex offender" because he, at 16, had consentual sex with a 15 year old who's parents flipped out. He has a really hard time, and he is a great husband, wonderful father, and hard worker. But nothing is easy for him.
