Hi everyone! I notice that people often post questions about moving to Florida. Many people say that they would like to move in the next five years (the magic number!) or would like to move down but aren't sure what "real Orlando" is like outside of the resorts. We were in the later category, and we moved down here in mid July after a year of planning and years of talking about it. (Mostly my husband saying no.) Being a family with three children, two of which are school aged- this was not a decision we took lightly. I am lucky enough to be a nurse, so finding a job down here was easy. My husband is still looking, but he couldn't find a job where we came from anyway. Now we are are at least in an area with actual jobs in his field! (tech support)

So here we are, almost 3 months in. I will give you the pros and cons while everything is still fresh, as well as what we didn't anticipate.

What we didn't anticipate:

Moving is deceptively expensive. In a horrendous way. I wont give you the long run down of all of the crazy things that popped up, but I will say that Disney has yet to be visited.

The summer was not bad. honestly. We rode our bikes all summer after I got off of work. It was lovely to ride under the trees. (that is the secret! Stay in the shade!)It has been rainy here lately and we haven't gone.

Pros:

1. Great schools. Where the schools are top notch, expect less crime. We looked at crime maps and top school areas and triangulated neighborhoods this way. I love love love my kids new schools!!

2. Everything you could want is nearby. Seriously. I used to drive three hours to reach a lot of the places that are now five minutes away. You want a trampoline park? which one? Waterpark? Ocean? Safari? and IKEA!!! I am especially lucky to be a bike ride away from a shopping center with a ridiculous amount of awesome stuff. Coffee, sushi, tapas, you name it.

3. Sidewalks. This one sounds funny but I really, really appreciate it. Communities from the last 20 years are all built like resorts, and the surrounding roads connect the communities, gated or not. I can ride bikes from my house with my family for 15 miles, easy, on safe, wide sidewalks.

4. Nature. We lived in a "city" before- but we were surrounded by lots of trees and farms. We now joke that we live in a jungle. Our backyard is fenced and behind it is a nature preserve. On a daily basis we have lizards, bugs out! (We have honestly not a had a problem with bugs yet. Lizards, tree frogs, butterflies, herons, etc. We love the lizards because they keep the bugs out! Because we haven't been to Disney, we have spent time in Florida's natural Springs, the Gulf Beaches, Cape Canaveral, Fort Christmas, (that is a real Fort!) and enjoyed the natural beauty of Florida that we never even knew existed!

5. Rain. yes, it is a pro! I love rain. We were thinking about going to Seattle because I love rain so much (and because they are just my kind of people.) Here, we get a proper drenching and then the sun comes out! Along with the rain is the crazy clouds and massive skies. You can watch a giant black cloud raining down across the city and have sunshine above your head.

6. We can afford a nice house here! We rented for a year just to make sure that we found the neighborhood that we wanted (we did!) What we can get in a home compared to MD is just crazy.

7. The people. Almost everyone here is a transplant. They came here to have a better life and are very happy to be here. There are a lot of rednecks outside of the city. I was really confused the first time I saw a truck sticker with "Florida Cracker" on it!

8. toll roads. A weird pro, I know. The main highways other than I-4 are well maintained and other than rush hour, are an easy ride. I love it, though it gets expensive quickly.

9. I get to watch a Ravens Game for $60. In Baltimore the same seat is $200.

Cons:

1. Traffic. We are on the lighter traffic side of town, but rush hour makes a 15 minute commute turn into an hour. The non-toll roads are always busy and congested. People turn into lunatics when it rains.

2. Lack of Culture. Orlando is a baby city. It is clean and if you have ever been to Jersey, New York, Baltimore, D.C,- then you are wondering where the graffiti and bums are. They aren't here! But neither is the Smithsonian. My kids have been spoiled with bi monthly visits to Smithsonian museums since birth and they didn't know it. The Orlando Art museum is eh, Science center is Eh, and neither is free. They DO have a blooming performing arts scene, however. The Shakespeare Theater, The new Dr. Phillips Center, The Bob Carr Center, etc. Lots of Ballet and Broadway.

uh, I can't think of any more cons. Give me some time. Our biggest cons were the anchors that were (and are) keeping us tied to MD.

Like I said, we haven't seen the mouse yet. Our budget does not give the green light for our annual passes until next month. (so close!! yay!!)

In the planning process, we thought our home would sell more quickly than it did and for more money than it did. Though we aren't in the hole- our plans have changed a bit. We both look at it as a sacrifice that we made to give our children a better life. A lot of people gave us the whole "grass is greener" talk before we moved. I am beginning to laugh at that expression. My husband had serious reservations about moving here, and we are now both so happy that we came.

If you want to move here to be close to Disney- bad decision. We moved here after creating a long list of demands. Out of the entire United States- this place offered everything we wanted. Our list is most likely different from your list, but please feel free to ask me any questions.

What do you other Orlando transplants think? Were you happy after you came? How long have you been here?

My sis lived in north Orlando for a year when her kids were little-moved back to NC

(now empty nesters they live in Jacksonville and love it)

Her one negative was the transient nature of her VERY nice subdivision-literally someone moving in or out weekly. Neighbors didt stay long

THIS is Orlando. People are constantly moving in and out. They either lose their job or can't find a job that pays them enough to afford their lifestyle any longer.
There are also people like us that live in another state as well. Many of our friends are gone for weeks or months at a time. There are many occasions where most of us in this neighborhood are all mostly out of town at the same time! But, we live in a gated community with a guard house that you would have to drive up to to gain access so there is never a problem.

The state of Florida is mostly a service industry state- There is some high tech, but not much.

We also moved to Orlando this summer and are also loving it!

Everyone warned us about terrible schools in Orlando, but we found that to be so untrue. We have found the district we are in to be so much better than the school our kids went to in Oregon (which was one of the top rated).

In Oregon, we had 28-30 kids per classroom. Grades were not given until 6th grade, and state tests were forged (I know this for a fact, it happened to my son) to make it look like the kids were learning, when in fact, they were barely able to read or write.

In the Orlando suburb we are in, there is a MAX 18 per classroom--my son's class has only 15! Kids are held to a higher standard, they are given grades and assignments--which are actually looked at and GRADED by the teacher!

For the schools alone, I am very glad we made the move to the Orlando area!

I think you left out 1 Pro......NO SNOW!!!!:thumbsup2 (originally from Michigan so I know snow!!):wave2:

OP congrats on your move!! DH and I moved to the Melbourne area in late July and have been loving it. We moved here for a job so we were already set in that area. This area of FL is awesome :thumbsup2 We love being a 20 min drive from the beach and a 50 min drive from Disney, it's the best of both worlds for us. We moved from WA state and the house we were able to afford here, would not have been anywhere near our budget out in WA so that is another plus. We really haven't come up with any cons yet other than our electric bill, lol..... but A/C is a must ;)

Can you give us details of the neighborhoods you live in and found them to be safe, family oriented, nice homes, good ammenities, and with good schools. You're right - moving just for Disney is a bad reason. Everyone needs to look at the bigger picture before making such a big decision of transplanting the family.

Question for those that moved to Orlando from the northeast (or similar climate):

Do you ever feel like you simply traded several months of wanting to stay inside due to cold, for several months of "too hot"/staying inside?

I've become interested in such a move someday.

I moved here 3 months ago as well. I am also a nurse and my husband just finished school and has started the job hunt! We love it here! It was daunting looking for a job with all of the hospitals to choose from. What company did you end up going with? I am with HCA. We have already purchased our annual Disney passes and go anytime I am off!!

We are moving back. Moving truck at our house in Brevard County (east of Orlando).

For the last 4 years, I have been cold on Northern VA from Nov-Mar. 5 months! And my skin hated it. In any case, trading that back for 3 months of exceptionally hot from June-Sept is worth it to me. But I really despise the cold.

My husband hates hot, but he hates cold more.

Not quite the experience you seek--but I don't have to shovel the driveway in the summer. :-)

I don't live in Orlando - Tampa Bay coast. But yes, I definitely traded 6 months (in a good year!) of staying mostly indoors due to the cold of WNY for 4ish months of hibernating from the heat. I'm pretty okay with the heat until mid-Aug, at which point my 20 years of northern living still expect temps to lower and feel like "fall"... you know, just as we reach the peak of hot and humid down here. Mid-Aug through Sept sucks the life out of me, and it's when I most miss northern fall weather. But once Oct. comes I'm good again! :cheer2:

We noticed this the first week we were here! Though I think the time right before school starts is a really busy moving time. My neighbors seem really nice but our block neighborhood is def. very transient and full of rental homes. Down the street it is really more permanent residents and where we plan to buy a home next year.

For the schools alone said:
Us too! MD is known for having great schools- but our town had terrible schools, gang violence- the teachers were too busy putting out "fires" to teach. We love that the high school is big enough to offer wonderful options for electives. My 5th graders teacher is wonderful! She even uses an app to keep us updated every week.

Definitely not. What I love about living in Orlando is that I am constantly busy socially. In the midwest, no one really goes out often in the winter so with Florida being "summer" all year round there's always something to do and someone to do it with. I am not a big fan of extreme temperatures, but I have adjusted fairly easily to the humid and hot summers. Essentially you just get to the point where you accept that you are going to drip with sweat.

The summer heat and humidity does not bother me and does not prevent me from doing outside activities. In fact I'm usually out side all day long. Like most things, it's a state of mind.

I am still begging my Husband to make the move to Florida. Would you mind to give me some information on Flooring stores there and really good areas to be looking in. We too would rent to see if we are going to like it. We are coming back down in December and Im really hoping that he will give me the ok. We would not be moving for a few months unless something great was to present itself. If you don't want to share the neighborhoods and things on here would you mind to PM me, please..

YES!! How could I have forgotten that one? I guess we haven't been through a winter here yet, but ask any nurse up north their feelings about snow. We are sometimes required to spend the night in the hospital just in case there is a storm that would prevent us from getting there! and unpaid!! I HATE snow. It is only fun to play in when it is perfect powder conditions or watching it fall from inside. I'm sure we will fly up north for a trip every winter to go snow tubing.

We moved to an area called Waterford Lakes. It is a collection of neighborhoods in the northeast side of Orlando. We originally looked at a place called Avalon Park, but Waterford Lakes is much more wooded and has more of an established feel. Both neighborhoods are connected and we would honestly love to buy a home in either area. Schools are top rated, awesome homes with lots of gated communities (if you like those-we don't see the point as these are very safe communities) and great shopping and access to highways. We are about a half hour from Disney.

We came from the east coast of MD. Unless we were headed to the beach- I stay inside all summer! We have been surprised that we have been outside more this summer (in Florida) than we were in MD. After we discovered the natural springs, we were hooked. The springs stay cold year round (72 degrees I think?) and the shade from all of the live Oaks keeps you cool. When we head to the Gulf, I sit in the water with a visor on. It is shallow enough that I just chill in the water all day long. On the beach- it is roasting! I think it is all about adapting to the surroundings. One difference- I used to lay out in the sun all summer. That is not an option here. I would cook up like a hot dog!
