Yup, I bit the proverbial bullet here in New England. It has to be done and didn't want to put it off any longer. One fill up usually does it for us, we try and keep the thermostat about 63 ish the whole season. Paid 3.39 a gallon and paid 632.00 for a fill up, eek!:scared1: But it's done and that feels good. Sooo, have you started to prepare for Winter yet?

I had this conversation with someone from the East, in Ohio almost all homes are heated by natural gas, so you dont feel up anything, the pipes are just connected to your house. Until recently I thought everyone was like me :rotfl:

Well, last week I paid $250 to have two cords of firewood delivered. Unfortunately, it is delivered in something like a dump truck. Now I have to finish stacking this load before we order the next load. I am hoping to use less propane this winter.

I live in Ohio. Most are heated by natural gas but some are electric, propane, or oil. We probably pay the same but its spread out over the months as we use it.

I grew up on the west coast, have been a military spouse now for many years and have lived many places in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world, but I have never filled up a furnace and honestly I have no idea what one would fill a furnace up with. :confused3
Currently we live in a medium size house in a moderate climate and keep the thermostat at 70 in the winter; our (central, whole house, gas) heater cost about 600 dollars to operate for the whole winter season. Good for you for keeping the thermostat at 63. We really need to work on keeping ours lower in winter.

You fill up a furnace with heating oil, and it's getting more and more expensive each year.

We switched to electric heat 2 or 3 years ago and I am glad we did. The price of kerosene that we heated with is definitely raising faster than the cost of electric. Granted ask me in January or Feb when we have a 600 electric bill.

WINTER??? eekkk I don't even want to think about winter yet!!! Lol :)

Actually, I just hope we have Fall this year.....you know, that season between Summer and Winter where you don't run the air conditoner or the heater?
Just checking the budget, I figure another 6 weeks of running the a/c before we get a break on the electric bill. We haven't had a "normal" fall in about 10 years it seems, or Spring for that matter. Normal meaning we shut off the AC in mid October, and can wait until the first week of December to turn on the heat.....

Propane is horribly expensive to use for heat and I'm really not sure why. :confused3 We used to have propane and it cost well over $3.00 per gallon. I think the last time we had the tank filled, we were billed $3.55 per gallon. Our neighborhood had natural gas lines put in so we now have natural gas. It is much less expensive than propane.

You fill up an external tank with either propane or heating oil

We heat with natural gas.
The thermostat is set at 70.............can't go any lower here. I am slowly adapting to AZ weather, so that even seems cold.
Luckily we don't have to run heat for very long............AC is another thing

we have gas, so don't need to get oil filled, but do need to make the appt to have the boiler have its yearly service, and get the fireplace/chimney swept.

we spent yesterday at the beach and it was wonderful, but the writing is on the wall. just cleaned out the big summer swim bag and put it away and am heading out in a bit to buy some mums.

we only use wood for heat, and I called my wood guy last week and made sure he had mine reserved..he delivers it in a big dump truck for $100 a load..and a load is a little more than a cord..so I'm lucky to have found him!

We have about 3/4 of a tank of oil left from the April fill but I'm tempted to have them come top it off before the season gets started.
Our last fill was about 3/4 of a tank in April and it was $800.
Thankfully we only get 3 fills a year.

This year the kids are getting down comforters and footie pajamas so I can keep the temps down a bit.

I do need to call for boiler service though, thanks for the reminder!
I will call them on Tuesday, I want to get a jump on it.

we are on an automatic delivery... $600.00 is average for each month! I try and keep the costs down but the high price of oil is just crazy.

We did use our fireplace and got wood to help with the costs and it lowered it by about $100 per month, but no matter what the bill is a killer.

This past sring summer, i had the house renovated..... I'm so hoping that the oil cost will go down now that they have reinsulated most of the down stairs...will shall see.

I actually got my first bill already in june. They had not delivered since march and it was over $600. My oil is also used for heating my hot water so its always in use even when the heat is off.

Boy am I glad my heat is radiant so it runs off the hot water heater. That is gas powered and my budget billing for gas is $39 a month for the whole year. My electric budget bill is $60 a month for the year. And I live in an area that gets very hot in the summer.
