This was a short but sweet trip for us (myself and DS who’s 5.5) so I didn’t bother taking the dining plan. We had the good fortune of having free dining back in August and had thoroughly enjoyed that. I figured this time it would be too much for us. Of course I didn’t take into account the bottomless pit that’s my child’s stomach. And we do enjoy our TS meals, so for our upcoming trip in August I did decided to do the DDP again.

1/23

We arrived on Wednesday at ASMu mid-afternoon. My DS was insistent that our first night that we’d go to SciFi. He was very taken with it when we went the last time and I’d had one of the best burgers I’d ever had there, so I was happy with his choice. We checked in, my DS watched The Top 7 Must Sees in WDW (the first of the 1001 times he watched it over the course of the next few days, having watched at least that many times the previous times we were here, I seriously believe he’s obsessed with Stacy) and we headed over to MGM, oops Hollywood Studios and SciFi.

We were seated almost immediately and had a really good server. My DS ordered the kid’s hot dog meal with the tomato soup as his appetizer, and a kid’s sundae for dessert. I ordered onion rings for an appetizer, a burger and a chocolate milkshake. The onion rings were excellent and I shared with DS since he didn’t eat the soup. The milkshake was very thick and creamy, mmmm. My burger was cooked well and DS enjoyed his hot dog. However, it just wasn’t a great experience for us. We were in a car off on the side where there was a lot of foot traffic which I think took away from the atmosphere. There was a family seated ahead of us with a little girl about 3 years old who kept turning around staring at DS and this kept freaking him out and he told me to tell her to stop looking at him. The burger was just as good as last time, but I just didn’t enjoy it as much. DS did really enjoy making the kid’s sundae, I think mostly because the family in front of us had left. All in all, a good meal, but not as good as I remembered from last time.

We had breakfast at the food court at ASMu. It was Mickey waffles with bacon for both of us, since what’s breakfast at WDW without some Mickey. We also had oranges and DS picked up a small container of Apple Jacks. I didn’t think he’d actually eat the cereal too, but he did. He eats like he’s a linebacker. The Giants could use him on Sunday, I tell you.

This was our Animal Kingdom day. I love Flame Tree Barbecue and knew that was where I wanted to have lunch. DS wanted to get lunch from Restaurantosaurus. Our plan had been to pick something up there for him and to take it to us with us to Flame Tree. It worked out that DS didn’t want to walk back to Restaurantosaurus and decided to eat from Flame Tree too. I got the ribs and he got the kid’s hot dog meal. The ribs weren’t that great, kind of fatty and gristly. I’ve definitely had better there. The beans were good. This was the first time I was there with the corn muffin instead of the ear of corn. I loved the corn muffin!!! It was excellent. DS got grapes and fruit punch jello with his meal. He was a little freaked by the ducks. The last time we were there he kept trying to feed them but this time he didn’t want them anywhere near them, although he did take the crumbs from my corn muffin and throw them to the ducks when we were leaving. Oh, we also got a chocolate cake to share, which was also very good, nice and moist. And there are straws now at Flame Tree. I hadn’t been in AK since 2006, but remember there always not being any for fear of the animals choking on them, but these were paper straws so I guess they must be safe. DS didn’t eat the jello or the grapes so we took them with us. He ate the grapes while we waited for the Nemo musical to start but the poor jello took a dive out of my bag and splattered scarlet somewhere in Asia near the jungle trek.

In the late afternoon we went over to Downtown Disney. Our first stop was Goofy’s Candy Co. It was blissfully uncrowded in there compared to the other times we’ve been there. We got a fudge cookie covered with milk chocolate, m&ms, peanut butter cups and peanuts for me, marshmallows covered with dark chocolate, cashews and some kind of drizzle on it for DS. To take home we got 3 pretzel sticks covered with white chocolate and various toppings. The cookie was spectacular and DS felt the same way about the marshmallows. (Oops, sorry the cookie is already partially eaten, it was so good I forgot to take the pic, DS had to remind me). :)

For dinner we were either going to go to Earl of Sandwich or back to the food court, but DS begged me to go to the Rainforest Café. It’s been years since I’ve been in any Rainforest Café and I’ve never been to that one and I wasn’t expecting that much. I’d also heard about the extremely long waits for a table. But we had a fabulous meal. DS loved the atmosphere, and loved that we were seated next to a fish tank. He loved the animals making sounds and the fake thunderstorm. The server pushed us to get appetizers, but I declined and I’m glad I did because the serving sizes of the food were enormous. I have no idea how you could manage to eat an appetizer there and manage to eat an entrée too, and forget dessert. I got paella which was very tasty. I ate and ate and still managed to only finish about half of it. DS got the “Shrimpkens” which was half popcorn shrimp and half chicken tenders with kettle chips. He ate all the shrimp and all the tenders, so I assume they were very good. All in all, I think it was a very good value and good food. And we were seated almost right away and the service was very good. We did have dinner early, but I think that from the time we went in until I’d paid and we left was only about an hour.

The picture of the paella doesn't make it look that good, but really it was extremely tasty. I didn't eat the garlic bread that came with it though, so I'm not sure how that was.

We were back at the ASMU food court for breakfast. This morning we both got chocolate chip pancakes with bacon. DS also wanted eggs though but I didn’t see where you could just get a side of eggs. I decided to also get the breakfast platter with the eggs figuring it would be a waste of food, but I got it, hey it’s a vacation. But DS ate his whole chocolate chip pancakes kids meal plus the eggs, bacon and sausage from the breakfast platter. I ate some of the potatoes and some of the biscuit. I wished I hadn’t afterwards because I was sooooo full, and this was the day of our lunch reservation at Le Cellier. And thank goodness we did a ton of walking today to work that off.

Luckily our lunch ADR wasn’t too early so it gave us some time to empty our stomachs a little, although I don’t think it was an issue for DS since by 11:00 or so he wanted to get an Itzakadoozie which I nixed, and wanted to fill up on soda at Club Cool. When we got to Le Cellier we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. For an appetizer I got the Prince Edward Island Mussels for an appetizer and DS got the carrots and celery with ranch dip. The mussels were very good. The applewood bacon gave the mussels and the chowder a nice smoky taste. DS said he couldn’t believe I was “eating something from the ocean” two days in a row since I’d had the paella the day before, lol. For the entrée I got the NY strip and DS got the kid’s meal with steak and fries. I had been planning on getting the filet, but instead of coming with mashed potatoes it said it came with a sweet potato puree and I’m not a big sweet potato fan. The NY strip was very good though, nice and tender. DS’s steak was very good too and he ate most of it. That said, while the steaks were really good, they weren’t as great as I’d expected them to be. Maybe if I’d gone for the filet. And we both loved the pretzel bread, mmmm. DS’ meal came with a kid’s sundae which he enjoyed.
