We ate here, there, & way over there, deluxe style...6/20 to 6/27 **Final ANALYSIS**

It was around 1:00 PM.

DH and I were hungry. DS was snacky, he'd slept in longer and eaten his breakfast later.

We decided to just eat from Roaring Fork for lunch.

RF has two counters. One is the grill area, with hot food. The other was a sandwich and salad station. The grill line was very long. The sandwich line was empty. We headed to the sandwich line. It sounded better on a hot day anyway.

I was thrilled to see the choices. They have a little display with the available sandwiches made for all to see. Then the CMs behind the counter prepare your chosen sandwich right in front of you, allowing you to alter the toppings, like tomato and lettuce, to your liking.

Two sandwiches were made on foccaccia bread, a turkey with brie and a roast beef with blue cheese, I think. It looked like WAY too much bread for both DH and myself.

DH and I each got a sandwich made on a hearty sliced bread.

DH got tuna.

820.jpg

And I got the grilled veggie.

819.jpg

Check out how BIG it was:

818.jpg

The grilled veggies were marinaded zucchini and red bell peppers. They were cold. There was a roasted pepper hummus on it too. Both sandwiches were served with a pasta side salad. The salad was dressed with a vinegrette. DS ended up picking out all the pasta after he ate his fill of his vanilla soft serve:

There was plenty of seating indoors, but there were also several diners. It felt a bit chaotic and loud. We headed to the plentiful outside tables. I couldn't pass up the beauty of the outside. (Again, I admit that these were taken on a different day, at a different time, but this WAS the view from our table...)

869.jpg

873.jpg

Surrounded by the beautiful landscaping, seated under the umbrella covered table, we enjoyed our sandwiches. You can't really go wrong with a fresh made sandwich, especially when you have a good selection. The setting was nice too. It was pleasant to not have a server coming back and forth from the table. It was refreshing after so many TS meals. It felt like family time.

And then there were the birds. Again, our outside dining had bird company. But these were aggressive black birds. Very annoying, if you let them get to you. The family at the table next to us had three young children. They were entirely distracted by the birds and were constantly trying to shoo them away. It was driving the parents a little nuts. They kept trying to get the kids to ignore the birds.

Our DS enjoys scaring birds. Not sure why. But he does. Once we got all the kids to just ignore the begging poultry, we were able to eat in peace.

We used 2 meal entitlements and 1 snack.

Sitting outside in such a beautiful, resort setting, I was happy for the serendipity of the day. It was nothing like I had planned it to be. But it felt nice. I realized that with all of the TS choices, we weren't really eating outdoors too much. And I realized that there are several pleasant outdoor places to eat around WDW. It made me start thinking about how I would plan our next trip to WDW...

Great review...we love Tusker House Breakfast and Boma...they have great juice, coffee and great selection of food. I like Boma that you can get eggs anyway you like. Chefs de France is great lunchtime...we love having lunch there. I can't wait to read more yummy reviews. Thanks for sharing.

We were back in DTD, Disney Quest to be exact.

On the way to find the restrooms, I passed through the snack counter on the fourth floor. That's when I saw the CUPCAKES.

DH has a sweet tooth.

And big, HUGE sweet tooth.

Especially for bakery items.

I knew we HAD to get some of the cupcakes.

We SO weren't hungry, but we got them to go to enjoy later.

DH picked out this white cupcake with white chocolate topping:

838.jpg

DS picked out this chocolate cupcake:

840.jpg

I picked out this chocolate cupcake with butterfinger topping:

839.jpg

If you can't tell from the photos, the toppings of these cupcakes are easily 4 inches high. DSs cupcake had a caramel filling. Mine had ooey gooey chocolate ala molten lava cake, but not runny.

What a treat! I saw them again later at Starring Rolls in Hollywood Studios.

3 snack credits.

Loving your review. Can't wait to read more!

Thank you both. I've updated several smaller meals. ENJOY!

I have to have one of those cupcakes :cloud9: Hmmmmmm... maybe at Starring Rolls for a late breakfast. Somehow I will have one!

We had a 5:30 PM ADR at the Yachtsman Steakhouse.

When we had left the resort for DTD/DQ earlier in the day, we dressed appropriately for dinner.

It was a nice set up because we drove our own car to DTD. I remembered thinking that the buses to DTD were a real pain. We drove straight to YC from DTD.

The guest parking area we were directed to was LIMITED. People were illegally parked all over the place. I was surprised, because this is a convention resort. There must have been additional parking somewhere else, but it wasn't readily noticeable. Allow plenty of time to park if you drive yourself.

The walk into YC from the parking lot was the prettiest walk into a resort that we encountered.

859.jpg

860.jpg

857.jpg

I was wearing my brand new skirt that I had purchased in AK during PM EMH. I LOVE that skirt. I knew it was pretty too, when we walked through the sliding doors into the lobby and a little girl sitting on a bench said, "OOOOOOOO, pretty dress." What a nice little ego boost! My men were wearing dressier shirts and shorts.

856.jpg

We checked in right on time, if not a bit early. There was no one else waiting, but we were handed a buzzer and told to wait.

I took this opportunity to freshen up in the Ladies room, which like many TS resort restaurants, is located in the hallway outside the restaurant itself. When I returned, our hostess was waiting with DH and DS to seat us.

Upon entering YS, we all paused at what I'll call, The Meat Window, where several cuts of bright red meat were displayed in a room that was clearly the meat storage room. We were told about the specialty of the house, the NY strip, which was aged on property for however long, which gave their NY strip a nutty flavor. There was another adjective too, but I don't recall exactly, buttery maybe?

Then we were lead into the far rear area of the restaurant. Just beyond our table were swinging saloon style doors that must lead at least the beverage station, if not the kitchen. I was not thrilled with our location. But I didn't feel the need to ask to be seated elsewhere, so I kept my mouth shut.

There was a fireplace in this room. I imagine that it would be quiet cozy and inviting to be seated back here if it were ever cool enough to have a fire going.

The large room is divided into smaller sections with strategic walls and wooden posts. Opposite our side of the restaurant, there were floor to ceiling windows that overlooked the beautiful Stormalong Bay pool area shared by Beach Club and Yacht Club. Perhaps it was the low ceiling. Or the very yellow lighting, which is apparant in my photos. Or the light colored wood. Or the swinging saloon doors. Even with white table cloths, this Signature Restaurant had a more relaxed feel. That steakhouse vibe, that sit back and make room for steaks that are far beyond what a normal meat serving should be.

DSC00517.JPG

With the potential for so many business related clientel, I shouldn't have been surprised to note that the patrons were by far the MOST dressed up here than any other Signature we visited.

We were greeted with what I could almost call ceremony by Richardo, who our hostess had said was named Ricky. Richardo was from Columbia. He was the epitome of the gallant Latin gentleman. Like his namesake, Richardo Montalban, on Fantasy Island. I can't count the number of times that he used our names while serving us. Would you like some more water, Mrs. XX? How is your meal, Mr. and Mrs. XX? As I write this, I realize that it may sound cheesy, but it was very natural for Richardo. It simply flowed. It made me feel special. Like more than just another table on a different day. I was so glad that I didn't request to be moved.

A different couple did request to be moved. They had been lead to the two person table behind us that was fully against the wall. The first table next to the saloon doors. Something about them. I just knew that they wouldn't stay at that table. Another couple sat there a few moments later. They spent the entirety of their meal wrapped up in each other and enjoying the marvelous service of Richardo. I guess you just need to listen to your inner voice. Sometimes you move, but sometimes you don't. If you pay attention, you'll get the experience that you are hoping for.

And I was hoping for a big juicy steak. I hadn't eaten ANY steak yet this trip, even though different filets and such are loved at CG, Jiko, and Chefs by many here on the Dis. So far, I had eaten sushi, salmon (twice), lamb, and duck. What fun!

It had been another scorcher. It was hot and we wanted a cold drink. YS had Sam Adams' beers on draft. We ordered two Summer Ales. Perfect for a hot summer day. So perfect, DH and I each had two during the course of our meal.

842.jpg

The bread arrived with the beers. Oh my. I've read many times over about the pull apart onion rolls at YS. And now I understand. I had pictured rolls that baked so close together you had to pull them apart to eat just one. Oh no. These are little individual rolls that are so fluffy and flakey, you can pull each individual apart into three or four pieces. This translates into tremendous surface area for the butter, which was served on a plate with olive oil and a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. There were also plain dinner rolls in the bread basket, but who could be bothered with them when the onion rolls were at hand?

843.jpg

844.jpg

841.jpg

The balsamic vinegar was difficult to capture with your knife. But should you manage to get some onto the bread... well worth the effort.

We were an easy order to remember tonight. DS ordered the jr. strip. DH and I each ordered the NY strip. The filet was tempting; normally I order filets, as they tend to be a leaner cut of meat. But after the shpeel about the NY strip, it seemed sacriligeous to order anything but.

DS was thrilled to see chicken soup as a choice for his appetizer. He was talking about wanting some earlier in the day.

845.jpg

Richardo had recommended two different starters. The lobster bisque and the scallops. DH followed his recommendation, ordering Seared Maine Diver Scallops served with Diamond white cheddar risotto and aged sherry vinaigrette.

846.jpg

These were amazingly tasty. The scallops were large, perfectly seared, and not overcooked. Get a bite with the risotto and that was culinary bliss right there. I admit that DHs appie was FAR superior to mine.

I'd had lobster bisque the day before, and it WAS super tasty. If YS's version was as good, it would be a winner. But I was hot. I didn't want soup. I had gone against Richardo's highest recommendation and went for the second tier, the Chilled Seafood Salad made with lobster, shrimp, and jumbo crab with lemon creme fraiche and avocado cream.

847.jpg

The seafood was fresh. The lemon in the creme fresh was very subtle. But in comparison to DH's hot, well seasoned dish, mine seemed rather ordinary.

When we ordered our strips, Richardo verified the degree of doneness with which we prefered our meat. DS is true to his midwest roots and likes his meat juicy and decidedly pink in the center, as we all do. Normally, we order a medium. However, as Richardo described medium, medium rare seemed much more to our liking; so for the first time ever, our entire family ordered their meat medium rare. Let me tell you. They were OUTSTANDING.

DSs plate:

849.jpg

I thought it was interesting that DS's meat was presented sliced. DS says, his steak was AWESOME.

Our plates:

851.jpg

850.jpg

852.jpg

If buttery was the other adjective the hostess used to describe the strip, it was right on target, at least with regard to the sensation of steak MELTING in your mouth. YUM. DH prefered the meat without the sauce. The potato side was less than stellar. The potato seemed undercooked and underseasoned. The mashed potatoes served on the child plate were much more yummy.

It seems to be the norm at a steakhouse to serve meat with potatoes only. YS was no exception. Like other steakhouses, other side dishes are offered at YS. I saw these at other tables. They are served on a largish dish with plenty to share. These sides are NOT included in the DDP.

As a cut of meat, NY typically has a rim of fat around one side and some marbling toward one end. These were typical. Even so, there was still plenty of steak to share with DS who quickly cleared his own plate of meat. And by forgoing the potato side, there was room for dessert.

DSs dessert was very fun to play with, the white chocolate puzzle.

853.jpg

DS took one bite and made a nasty face. Not so good to eat. I think he ate the whipped cream on the mini cupcake. No problem. DH had plenty to share. He ordered the Valrona chocolate three ways.

854.jpg

This was melt in your mouth. Each flavor was distinctive. From left to right, the flavors were peanut butter, espresso, and something we can't remember. Definitely different than what is listed on the allears menu. They were light. And fun. It seemed like it would just be too much chocolate to order the same thing, so I ordered Richardo's other recommendation, the creme brulee.

855.jpg

It was good. Not as good as DHs chocolate. All the fruit on top was a very nice touch. It was the only thing that made this creme brulee superior to the one at Wolfgang Puck Express.

Richardo was the only server that took my KTTW before presenting the bill. He brought back the two receipts with my key. One was exculsively for DDP credits, the other was the room charge for the beers. There wasn't any place to add a tip on the DDP receipt, but there was on the room charge. This really streamlined the whole check out process.

The bill, closed out at 7:17 PM:

KM Steak 12.00
KM Chck Noodle 3.00
KM Dessert 8.00
NY Strip 42.00
Scallop App 14.00
Chocolate 11.00
NY Strip 42.00
Seafood Salad 16.00
Creme Brulee 8.00

Total $166.14 after tax

4 Draft $25.56 after tax

The Yachtsman Steakhouse was a wonderful steak. The atmosphere was pleasant. But all in all, it didn't really offer anything beyond what I could experience easily here in the Houston area. It was excellent food, but it is a protein heavy meal. It would probably be better to start with a salad, instead of the seafood; but the seafood is so tempting, it would take tremendous willpower to resist it. I'm glad to have eaten here. For quality alone, I would return here. However, we are unlikely to eat here again any time in the near future because I prefer to pick restaurants that offer a more unique experience, especially at the prices/credits charged here.

Another one on the the to-do list this fall....thank you for a very yummy update I was contemplating trying the strip this time instead of the filet and I Think your review might have just won me over!

Great updates...I think I just spent an hour catching up! LOL!

We had Ricardo too when we ate there in June and he was awesome! Also loved the strip steak, must have been an off night for the potatoes, when i had them they were delish! Enjoying your reviews. I didn't know they made sandwiches at the WL too, good to know.

Jenjolt sent me over here to read your report and I'm so glad she did! What great reviews! I'm eating at a few of the places you reviewed and it's really getting me in the spirit (and hungry!).

You have a beautiful family. Thanks for sharing these reviews with us! :)

We had an 11:05 AM ADR at The Plaza in the Magic Kingdom. The Plaza is known for being overlooked as a TS in MK. Many are familiar with the ice cream parlor that sits on the corner at the end of Main Street, but totally unfamilar with the sit down restaurant associated with that ice cream parlor just around the corner toward Tomorrowland.

I'm not sure why exactly, but I was totally pumped to eat here.

I planned on ordering a big, fat, yummy cheeseburger with FRIES. I didn't have any other burgers on the agenda for the entire week. And I LOVE me a good cheeseburger. My men were pumped for the burgers too. We thought of it as our burger and sundae meal.

This morning was AM EMH for MK. I had originally wanted an ADR about a half hour later, but I took what I could get. And in the end, the timing was perfect. When 10:50 AM rolled around, we were HUNGRY. DS was hankering after some cold ice cream and trying to negotiate stopping for a snack. I had to remind him that we were going to eat at the mother of all ice cream snacks for lunch. And we headed over to the Plaza 15 minutes before our ADR. Finally, we would check in EARLY for an ADR!

Mmmmm. Not quite.

The Plaza doesn't open until 11:00 AM.

Off to the Main Street shops to bide our time in some air conditioning. LOUD music drew us to Main Street itself. There was a parade! Normally, my men are not parade watchers. We haven't watched one yet. Something about having to spend so much time waiting for it to begin is a real turn off. At this time, though, there was plenty of sidewalk available for front row viewing.

As park goers realized the procession down Main Street, everyone would just pause, standing along the curb. We snagged some shade and watched the floats and the stilt-walkers go by. I'll be posting the full picture story on my trip report, but just to whet your appetite for all things Disney:

941.jpg

It was perfect timing. We were able to watch all the floats go by before it was time to check in.

Now, buzzer in hand we stepped off into some shade to await the blinky lights that would single MEALTIME. We didn't have long to wait.

The Plaza is a tiny restaurant. Off the main dining room, there is a pretty gazebo-like room with windows almost 360 degrees around. The main dining room is really quaint. Courtesy of the Dis:

DSC00630.JPG

We were seated in there. I was happy to be seated at a table by the window. The windows were rather high off the ground, offering you a feeling of privacy from all the passerbys outside, with small cafe style curtains. Looking above the curtains, this was the view from our table.

948.jpg

949.jpg

Lisa greeted us warmly. She was efficient. And proud of it. She was thrilled to take our order right away. And again, we were a tricky order. Kid's burger. Cheeseburger with grilled onions. Cheeseburger. All cooked medium please. All with fries.

There was only one moment that was shaky. DH likes pickles on his burgers. It's like a necessity. And if he couldn't have pickles, then seriously, I don't think he was going to be able to order the burger. Pickles weren't listed as one of the toppings that came on the burgers! Never fear. They were just unlisted, but surely present and accounted for.

We didn't point out that we were on the deluxe plan. It's possible that we were entitled to some sort of appetizer. We all just had burgers and ice cream on the brain. We certainly didn't need any distractions from these goals. I recall that the kids menu included an appetizer AND dessert in the price. Lisa was a little surprised that DS didn't want anything. And perhaps, even more surprised that I didn't care that he didn't eat even grapes with his lunch. Vacation people. Besides, we still had those grapes from before in the room.

The dining room was starting to fill quickly. I know that the family seated at the table next to us was a walk up. I think they were from the UK. They had some sort of certificates that were only good at Tony's Town Square. After hearing that they couldn't use their certificates at the Plaza, the mom and dad exchanged a look, shrugged, and they all got up and left. I almost wish I could have gotten feedback on whether or not they got a table at TONY's without an ADR. Don't you wonder sometimes?

Lisa returned quickly with this cute little plate. And two iced teas. And a whole PLATE of lemon. YAY!

950.jpg

And literally MOMENTS later, presented our table with happy burgers on happy buns.

DS's plate:

951.jpg

The size of the kid burger was more than adequate. This was a PERFECT child size. It was far bigger than your typical fast food child burger. YAY!!

Our plates:

952.jpg

953.jpg

Lisa was pretty proud of herself. She was commenting as she presented our plates, "I just LOVE it when MY customers are getting their plates and THEIR customers are getting their drinks." I thought that was pretty funny. I LOVE it when people enjoy their work, no matter what they do. Do it and be happy. She earned a great tip with her attitude.

The burgers were FANTASTIC. They were juicy. The toppings were fresh. It was almost like a mini build your own between your choice of hot topping on the menu and your choice of cold toppings on your plate. The fries were really good too. Not too salty. Crispy without being hard. And thick.

You bet we saved room for dessert.

And again, we were easy. Cookies and cream sundaes all around.

Technically, the kids dessert was called a Mickeylodeon. It was too cute.

954.jpg

We ordered hot fudge to top ours.

957.jpg

955.jpg

956.jpg

And the sundae makers were so good, they pooled the hot fudge in the bottom of the container before adding the ice cream. Then they poured it generously over the top. A mountain of whipped cream. All topped with a cherry!

It's been too long since we had a good sundae. DH eats his cherry and asks, "Didn't we know someone in college who could tie a cherry stem in a knot with their tongue?"

I couldn't believe my ears. And just a little while later...

958.jpg

The bill, closed out in record time at 11:56 AM.

Burger $11.99
Burger 11.99
KM burger 7.69
2 MC Sundae 9.98
2 Iced Tea 4.58

Total: $49.13 after tax

The Plaza was a GREAT lunch. Service at a CS price. Seriously. This bill was cheaper than the WPE bill. Yeah, you have to leave a tip, but still. Drink water if you are on that much of a budget. Or split the burger. It was a big one. We left feeling pretty stuffed after eating all our food. I understand now why many pay OOP for the Plaza, even if they are on the DDP. And it was FAST. I'm not sure I could get in and out of a CS during the lunch rush in less than 50 minutes. We will DEFINITELY return to the Plaza.

Another one on the the to-do list this fall....thank you for a very yummy update I was contemplating trying the strip this time instead of the filet and I Think your review might have just won me over!

If you've had the filet before, definitely try the strip! Very yummy.

Great updates...I think I just spent an hour catching up! LOL!

Ah. Turn about is fair play! Now you know how it felt to catch up on your TR!:lmao:

We had Ricardo too when we ate there in June and he was awesome! Also loved the strip steak, must have been an off night for the potatoes, when i had them they were delish! Enjoying your reviews. I didn't know they made sandwiches at the WL too, good to know.

Yay Ricardo! It's probably good that the potatoes were off. I LOVE potatoes, and if I had actually eaten them, I might not have had room for dessert! The sandwiches at WL were good stuff. I would contemplate taking a break from MK to go eat them on a future visit. The resort is so pretty. And there are so many nooks and crannies through out. Different places to hang out.

There is a heavily peppered fish next to the salmon on my plate. I THINK it was herring, simply from my previous experience here. It was smoked, and while I don't recall enjoying much of the herring 12 years ago, THIS fish was TAAAAAAAA-STY! Also note the weird slice of brown to the right. This is cheese, believe it or not. Caramel cheese, Mats said, with a knowing look in his eye. Yes, it is fabulous. WOW! We eat it on bread with butter, he advised. I tried it. That was okay. I just loved it, ALL BY ITSELF.

I was so pleased to see something on your plate from Akershus in Norway...

The "weird slice of brown" is gjetost (pronounced "yaytost" ...kinda) the "ost" means cheese, and the "gjet" means goat... :thumbsup2

I LOVE gjetost! If anyone else tries it, be forewarned that the consistency is a little different than other cheeses, and it kinda sticks to the roof of your mouth, a little bit like the way peanut butter does. But it really is a nice flavor... very different than other cheeses though.

I actually enjoy putting raspberry preserves on gjetost, and eating it just like that! Norwegians in my family also like Norwegian cheeses on buttered bread, and we have taken to putting butter on almost all of our sandwiches. To quote my mother, "butter makes everything better!" :goodvibes

I'm finally catching up on your reviews and getting very hungry in the process. I told DH to fire up that grill and get those steaks going NOW! I love your pictures of the Plaza--it is our "last" meal every trip and seeing your pictures of the restaurant, the burgers and my favorite--the sundaes (except, minus the whip cream for me), is making me miss it so much!

I just spent a pleasant evening reading your dining review. Thanks for the in depth information. It will be really helpful before I make our ADRs next month.

I'm SOOO glad that you posted! I couldn't remember the name of that cheese. Mats had told us what it was, but I didn't right it down! Now I can find it again! I'm so happy! I will have to try it with the preserves. I imagine that would be a great combo.

No WHIP CREAM!:scared1: Just kidding.

I'm glad my review brings back happy memories and good thoughts. Missing something helps us to appreciate it all the more when we meet again.

It was just after 3:00 PM and we were ALL snacky. I had to call Disney dining because I couldn't remember when our evening ADR was. Ah. 5:45. Yes, we DO have time for a snack.

DH had the Main Street Bakery cinnamon rolls on the brain. He couldn't think of anything else.

We were in Adventureland.

It was hot.

I had seen TOO many pictures.

I HAD to have a DOLE WHIP!!!

My men took off for the bakery while I hopped into the Aloha Isle line.

What to do?!?

What to do!?!

Dole Whip? Dole Float?

Dole Float? or Dole WHIP?

In the end, I just wanted the soft serve, no juice.

Oh baby. A swirly mountain of yummy tasty goodness was IN MY HAND!!

967.jpg

And now I understand.

Dole whip. Dole whip. Dole whip.

I adore pineapple. This cold pineapple creation was perfect on this HOT summer day. Very refreshing without making you feel super thirsty on the empty side of the bowl, like regular ice cream can.

1 snack credit.

I ate it on the way to meet my men on Main St. It was gone by the time I got there.
