So, basically what you're saying is that lizzie and steve are "lazy" parents? I don't think so. Don't you think for a second that if this technology would have been available to your (or my) parents back then that they wouldn't have utilized it.

That said, it's up to the parents to make sure that the kids aren't overweight or illiterate. My wife and I make sure the kids eat healthy and that they get have plenty of activities that excercize their brain. However, there are times when you do need to unplug....and the Cartoon Network is a godsend in that regard. ;)

Now now, It's who we all know who it is, I wasn't calling anyone lazy, I was more thinking along the lines of TV shows, DVDs, Video Games, and computers being used as babysitters in general. It does happen and I think it's sad especially when you don't have any control over the situation. :(

...Jas - can I add to that 'lack of discipline?

This has nothing to do with anything, but does anyone know how one can eat a Cadbury Flake without making a huge mess (and having to lean over the refuse can)?

oh yes please do, Madonna. Something along the lines of would rather be his or her friend than a parent.

Edited to add: AP, what is a Cadbury Flake? and uh oh she is eating chocolate. ;) Hey did someone SEND that to you???? :p

rotflmbo...that was my next point Jas...:o

AP - are those the same as just 'Flake's'?!? If not - then can we do a 'Cadbury Flake/Coffee Crisp' exchange program?!? ;)

BTW - can one of you American's tell me what the heck a 'ding-dong' is? We don't have those here either...

The very same Flake, known as the "crumbliest, flakiest milk chocolate." I also have a Cadbury Crunchie bar that will be calling my name tomorrow. Sure - we can do an exchange... I can also hook you up with some really strange Mexican candies. And Tabasco sauce... mmmmmmm. Gosh I'm going to miss all of this stuff by the end of next month. ;)

Well, sadly, there are bad parents out there. However, there are bad everythings...bad doctors, bad drivers, bad baseball players, bad Floridians (you're one of the good ones, Jas), etc. ;)

There are people who understand how to raise a kid and people who either don't understand or don't care...and whereas it's sad, it's a fact of life.

Ok - the Flake Im thinking of doesn't have any chocolate - it's like a pastry with cream and strawberry yummy stuff inside...

So - Cadbury Flake's are a chocolate bar like thing right? Hummm...I dont think that we have those...

It's an English thing. We also have Aero bars and Turkish Delights and so on... the wonderful thing about living in the 4th largest city in the U.S. is that there is a huge variety of international items that one can buy at the grocery store. I eat more international foods than I do American foods, though it's nothing against America.;)

This is fine when we are both in the car. However, more often than not, I'm the only adult in the car, so I need to keep my mind and eyes on the road.

If you have any suggestions of what games you could play with an 18 month old, I would really appreciate it, because I've tried everything with him and the only way he is quiet is watching his favorite show.

Very well said ITSA - My kids are healty, they eat right, spend plenty of time outdoors, play soccer, swim, and frankly are rarely in the house in front of the tube or on video games.

They know they are allowed this in the car because, frankly, to them it is probably quite boring to have to drive around to the bank, post office, food store, dry cleaners and all the errands that a mom must do. Not to mention our 10 hour drives to Myrtle Beach every year.

Unfortunately, most kids are babysat by the tv and other electronic paraphernalia. Sometimes, it is abused by the parent, but sometimes, it is a release for the child as well.

Ok off the soapbox -

I'm going swimming in the pool with the kids.
:smooth: ;)

A Ding Dong is a chocolate cake filled with creme covered in chocolate (made by Hostess -- the Twinkie people :) )

Geez Lizzie calm down. Did I say you???? I happen to be involved in a REAL LIFE situation where this is of a great concern to me.

Still I remember when I was growing up, which was not THAT long ago, and my TV watching was SEVERELY restricted. More often than not I was being read to (and as I got older, reading by myself), entertaining myself with my WONDERFUL imagination or Mom was doing some activity with me like baking or crafts. I was an only child so believe me BOREDOM could have come very easily. But yet I never was.

Jas once again - there is no need to tell me to calm down. I'm actually very calm.

I was merely pointing out some facts and asked for a suggestion. And, simply stating what my kids do.

If I recall the conversation started with tv in the car as an outlet for cranky kids while in the car. You know Dylan is 4 and loves to bake. We do it quite often. I bake with him at least once a week and he always brings cupcakes to his teachers and coaches. He is so proud of his masterpieces.:)

To bad we can't bake in the car:rolleyes: ;) :teeth:

Oh well, back to the pool. We're making lemonade with the neighbors kids

And my point Lizzie is that somehow we all managed to find other ways of entertainment than just the boob tube when we were younger.

Geez that statement sounds like something my mom would say. Wahhhhhh.

You're doomed now -- you're turning into your mother!! :p :p

...sigh...you know last night I was over at a relative's house and her 1 1/2 year old daughter was standing on this rocking horse...so she says "no honey - please get down, your gonna hurt yourself, mommy said to get down, down please, honey - please don't stand on there..." all the while Im waiting for this kid to take header into the brick wall beside her...finally the kid turns to her and says "NO!" and of course - the child continue's to stand on the rocking horse...

She sighs and says to me "You see - they just don't listen..." Im thinking to myself - "SHE'S NOT EVEN TWO OF COUSE SHE DOESN'T LISTEN!!! Pick her up off of the horse and put her on the ground, if she starts yelling - give her a smack on the butt..."

So - once she can't handle them - she puts on the Barney tape and flops them in front of the TV..."it's the only thing that keeps them quiet..."....sigh....yeah I guess it would be since your not willing to try ANYTHING else to entertain them...!!!

My point? Who exactly IS the one in charge these days?!? No wonder kid's don't respect their teachers - how can they when they don't even respect their own flippin parents?!?

I agree, madonna. If your kid doesn't listen, make them listen. The only thing that gets my 4 year old's attention is the wooden spoon. He's never been hit with it, but he's fairly sure he doesn't want to be.

It's like Bill Cosby said - if you tell your child to come here and he says "no," go get him, that's "yes."

The parents are the ones in control. If they tell you no, keep searching for something that they care about and take it away. Every child has something that they don't want to do without. Don't let the inmates run the asylum.

AH, the good 'ole days.

On our road trips I would get a few pillows to camp in the back seat, and some new coloring/activity books, little games, stuff like that. Kept me busy. At least I think it did - Mom may have a different story to tell. :teeth:

M - I see that all the time. Bugs me like crazy! Ugh! I don't wanna talk about it.....

AP - pictures won't be nescessary, I remember what you look like. :) But what kind of height can you get out of your kicks?
