WDW vs. the terrible twos- and the verdict is... trip update 2/12

Sept 25th- What exit is the airport again?

Prologue- I really thought that time around was going to be the trip that clicked in Everett’s head. I mean, the kid had been seven times, surely he would understand what “we’re going to Disneyworld” meant, right? I was really hoping to have a partner in crime with the whole overly excited bit.

So, the day before we leave, DS and I were driving to a playdate, and I decide to start prepping him for the adventure to come- it went something like this:
Me: Everett- do you know where we are going tomorrow?
Everett: Music class?
Me: Well, actually we’re skipping music class this week, because WE’RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!
Everett: *silence*
Me: Isn’t that exciting, what ride do you want to ride first at Disney?
Everett: I go Natalie and Catlin’s house
Me: Well, that’s where we are going to right now, but what ride do you want to ride tomorrow?
Everett: (with escalating volume) I GO TO MUSIC CLASS!
Me: Ummm… aren’t you excited to go see Mickey Mouse?
Everett: (bordering on hysterical) NO, NO Mickey Mouse, I GO SEE Natalie and Catlin!
Me: (acknowledging defeat) Okay, yes, that is exactly where we are headed and we’ll be there really soon!:headache:

Lesson learned- Don’t mess with your very literal two year old. :rotfl2:

So it was with some trepidation that I entered DS’s room at 5am the next morning- waking him up and saying “We’re going to Disney World- right now!”
DS pokes up his sleepy head and says “Ummm… Okay”. I’ll take it! :)

I’m really lucky in that Everett has no problems being woken up early in the morning. In fact, I think he was thrilled that I was actually sanctioning him being up so early, as opposed to begging him to go back to sleep like I usually do.

I got him changed and dressed in the Disney clothes I had laid out weeks ago, and then turned on some TV while I got last minute things together. It was so early that Disney Junior wasn’t even on yet, and Everett was forced to suffer through Phineas and Ferb (which I think he actually enjoyed).

Meanwhile my Mom was getting ready, and I was mildly concerned when I saw she was just getting into the shower, but wasn’t starting to panic yet. I got Everett some milk and a fruit bar and lined my suitcases and carry-on up by the front door.

The plan was to leave the house by 6 am- 6:15 at the latest, and by 5:45 me and Everett were both ready, coats and shoes on and waiting by the front door. I hadn’t seen or heard anything from my mother, so I peaked in her room to see how things were going. She was drying her hair. “Umm, Mom, almost ready to go?” “Well, I have to finish my hair, and put on my makeup, and then get some stuff together… no problem, I’ll be done soon.”

At this point I began to get mildly concerned. You see, my mom is all things awesome, but punctuality has never been her strong suit. When I was a kid I used to have to tell her that all my activities started an hour earlier than they actually did, that was the only way I actually be on time.
Everett and I continued to wait,

6am- rolled around- nope not ready yet:confused:
6:15- just a few more minutes:eek:
6:30- at this point I’m glad my Dad decided not to join us because he’d be having a coronary :scared1:
6:40- OK, actually progress, Mom is ready, and we’re headed out to the car
6:45- and we’re off, like a herd of turtles :dance3:

At this point I’m more than a little concerned, we’re a ½ hr off schedule and we still have to contend with rush hour traffic around Hartford. I took a deep breath and reminded myself that in all the traveling I’ve done with my Mom, we haven’t missed a flight yet. That’s not saying we’ve never been running for the gate as they are closing the doors, but once you’re on, you’re on, right? ;)

Well, I settle in for the drive, obsessively double checking that I have everything I need (I can’t be the only one who panics about things like forgetting my driver’s license, right?). Luckily for us traffic is very light, even around Hartford, and we breeze right through. At this point I’m starting to relax and dream of Disney and I’m truthfully not paying much attention as we approach the airport.

The next thing I know we’re driving by an exit, and my Mom asks me “Was that the exit for the airport?”

WHAT??!! I’m not the one driving, I wasn’t paying attention. Not to mention that my Mom has driven to this airport hundreds of times, and I’ve only been there a handful.

We quickly determine that we in fact did drive by the correct exit, but no problem according to my mom, we’ll just get off the next one and figure it out from there. I pull out the GPS and frantically try to get it to pull up the airport, but the dumb thing is searching for satellites and in the meantime thinks we’re in Maine and is attempting to direct us to the Portland airport. :headache:

Now things are starting to look bleak, we’re late, we’re lost, and we still have to park the car, check in and make it through security, with a toddler! :scared:

Somehow we miraculously make it back toward the airport (no thanks to you stupid GPS!) and found some signs that pointed us in the right direction. I guess we’re not the first people to miss the exit!

We pull up at departures and I quickly get Everett out of the car, while my mom unloads the suitcases and then speeds off towards long term parking.

While we waited for my mom to return, I located the skycap desk (no time for waiting in line inside!) and snapped a quick picture of Everett, meanwhile praying that security lines would be short.

My mom made it back to us from the parking garage in record time, the skycap processed our luggage, and we were on our way to security.

I do have an ace in the hole when it comes to airport security and that is that military members and their travel companions are often allowed to use the employee screening line, and I was fully prepared to take advantage of that perk if we were cutting it very close. Each airport has their own rules, but I know for sure that they allow it in Orlando (which is where we first learned about it) and at DCA.

This time, however, the security lines were deserted and we made it through very fast, even with all our stuff. We made up so much time that we actually had a FULL HALF HOUR until our flight left. This may not seem like much to other people, but that’s a lot of time when you are traveling with my mom. :rotfl:

At this point we split up, with my mom heading to McDonalds to grab a very healthy breakfast for us, and I went to get DS’s stroller gate checked. We boarded the plane with 10 minutes to spare folks- whoo-hoo! :cool1:

We ran into a slight snafu when we realized that someone was sitting in our seat, and they proceeded to take FOREVER to get their stuff gathered up on out of our way. The flight attendant started to get a little snippy with me and my mom, asking us to get seated, but there was really nothing we could do with someone else in our seats.

FINALLY that woman was out of our way, I threw DS’s car seat into the window seat, buckled it up, got him in and we were on our way to Orlando.
We ate our super-healthy breakfast while we ascended to cruising altitude, and then I pulled out the Ipad for DS, and I got out my reader to start my new book, The Light Between Oceans. DS was an angel on the flight, and was completely entertained with watching Princess and the Frog and Lion King with no volume.

IMG_0552.jpg

Once we got off the flight, DS was apparently trying to make up for his previous good behavior and was acting completely batty. I know he was really excited and was having a hard time controlling himself, but he still managed to earn two time outs before we even made it down to collect our luggage.

Once we collected all of our belongings, we proceeded down to the rental car area to pick up our rental. I had signed up on line to be an Alamo insider, the main attraction being that I could use a kiosk to check out, instead of waiting in line. That ended up being a really smart move, because despite having to switch kiosks twice do to them malfunctioning, we still were in and out before the line moved even one person.

Once outside I attempted to find the line for the standard cars, since that is what I rented, but I kept getting confused by long rows of minivans. I ended up asking someone where the standard isle was, and he pointed me back to the long row of minivans, telling me to pick anyone in that line I would like.

This seemed very strange to me, but I had read on the trusty DIS that they sometimes stock minivans in other isles, if they run out of the car type you rented. My mom was really skeptical, but I figured we’d ask again on the way out, and proceeded to load all our stuff into the van, which, of course I did not get a photo of.

I know that most people would have been thrilled with this turn of events, but I wasn’t completely enthusiastic, both because of the gas mileage, and because I knew that I would be driving it at least once and I’m miserable at driving larger vehicles, but with no other choice, off we went.

There is one thing I did really love about the minivan, and that is the button that auto-magically opened the doors of the car. Not having to struggle with a kid and open a door at the same time- genius! Now I just need to get my 2000 Honda accord retrofitted with that technology. :rotfl2:

After a quick stop at the gate and another affirmation that it was indeed OK to take a minivan, we were on our way out of the airport and off towards good old 417. I got my quarters and dollars bills out and ready in advance of the tolls and did my best to make sure my mom was going in the right direction. After living in Florida for years I am very familiar with 417, and after the navigational challenges of the morning, I wasn’t about to miss another exit.

Before long this lovely sight came into view, and all the stress and anxiety of a difficult travel morning melted away and we were officially on vacation! :yay:

Up next: Meltdown mayhem and upgrade magic!

"... a herd of turtles!" :lmao: I have never heard that before, and I seriously laughed out loud! :rotfl:

I don't know how you held it together. I'm one of those people who feels that if we're 5 minutes early, we're on time... if we're on-time, we're late! :confused3

In spite of the little challenges, you seem to be off to a great start!!! :goodvibes

Phew! I wasn't sure you were going to make it! I am so paranoid about being late for flights. Back when I was seven (a few years ago...ahem) we were really late to the airport. We ended up having to get a special bus out to the plane that was taxi-ing to the runway. (Pretty sure that would not be allowed these days). As we boarded all the passengers slow-clapped us. It was sooo embarrasing.

Great "getting to the airport" story! I would have been broken out in hives if I would've been in your car! Being late makes me crazy! however if it's someone else it makes for a great story to read! I have a friend I pull the hour earlier trick on too. One time she actually came at the earlier time I told her and commended me because she knows she's always late!

ETA: if I write a TR I will be sure to post a link. I've started two however they never make it to "publication"!! They get lost in the black hole of My Documents on my computer!!

That was a crazy morning! My Mom has the same issue with getting ready. Two Disney trips ago she over slept then had to stop to use the bathroom on the way at Starbucks then proceeded to order coffee too! :confused3:scared1:
I was FREAKING out but we did make it with time to spare!

Your April plans so wonderful!! Hopefully you get the rooms you want!! Good Luck!!!

 at Everett's reaction to Disney!! I guess you won't be filming any "we're going to Disney" surprise videos anytime soon! :rotfl:

That sounds like a stressful morning for you, but yay for making your flight and an uneventful trip to Disney!!!

I'm so glad you made it to the airport w/time to spare! I completely understand being stressed trying to get to the airport in time - my husband took forever to get ready and we always left at the last minute lol

Your little one is adorable - he looks so cute in his car seat on the plane concentrating on the movie. Can't wait to read all about your upgrade!

Being late doesn't usually really bother me, and truthfully I'd prefer to have less time at the airport than extra time to sit on my duff and wait around, but I certainly didn't want to miss the flight!

I'm not sure where the "herd of turtles" quote originates, but every time we leave the house on a vacation or road trip, my mother always has to say it!

Oh no, the dreaded slow clap! :rotfl:

I did miss a flight once when I was in college, it was completely the fault of the shuttle service I was taking, but it was pretty awful. It was a few days before Thanksgiving and all the flights were booked, so I almost didn't make it back home. After that experience, I never want to miss a flight again!

Joining in !!

Welcome, and do make yourself at home! ;)

If it was my DH or my Dad, surely they would have been going out of their minds! I was trying to stay zen about the whole thing, and it did end up working out in the end.

It took me a long time to get my first TR off the ground too, there were many mis-fires along the way. Now I'm really happy I have the documentation from our trips, its fun to go back and read about what we did, and I'm sure it will be fun to share with Everett and new baby in the future.

I'm glad I'm not the only one with a time-challenged mother! The funny part is that it doesn't seem to bother her at all, its like the thought of missing our flight never crossed her mind!

Yup, this was not the trip where he "got it", I do have high hopes for April, but I'll be sure not to discuss it when we are on the road to a playdate with his best friends.

I don't really mind cutting it close with the airport, but this was WAY too close in my opinion!

Thank you, he can be very cute when he wants to be, but very trying when he wants also. I was just happy that his black eye was pretty much healed up by the end of the trip! Its still a little visible these first few days, but gets much better.

I would have been so stressed out that morning! Your mom sounds like my mom & sister - not the most punctual people. :rolleyes1 Drives me insane! :headache:

But, I'm glad y'all made it in plenty of time onto the plane! Everett sounds like he did great on the plane. :thumbsup2 Did he get excited once he saw the Disney arches? He surely wasn't going to show any excitement the day before leaving. :lmao:

Love the story about prepping Everett for Disney :lmao: Kids have a way of keeping us grounded don't they?

What a crazy-making morning! I get very, very stressed about being late. My palms actually start to itch. (really weird I know). And the rental car? I'd have checked a few times too. I'm such a rule follower.

Yay for getting there in a safe and timely manner! Can't wait to hear more!

Lol I love his reaction umm..ok when you told him you were going to Disney world. My DD did not understand before we went last year but man she sure understands this year. Unfortunately I've been being bad and using it to my advantage she refused to use her potty until I told her that mickey mouse does not want any diapers in his parks :thumbsup2 but its working and after she goes she smiles and says Mickeys happy but hey it works right....

Your story about your mom getting ready for the airport was hilarious... although I know it wasn't very funny at the time. Reminds me of my DW. I regularly tell her we have to leave about a half hour earlier than the actual time. :rolleyes1 :lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

It's too bad that Everett had to make up for his good behavior after the plane landed, but I think I'd much rather deal with an uncooperative toddler on the ground rather than in a plane, so I'll call that a small victory for you. :thumbsup2 :rotfl2:

I'm not one of those obsessively early people, but I am obsessed with WDW, so I'm not a fan of any obstacle that could get in the way of me being there, including (but not limited too) missing my flight! :rotfl2:

I don't think that the Disney arches really inspired him either- but the monorails, that's an entirely different story for another update! ;)

It just seemed so weird that all they had were mini-vans, yet just one row over there were full sized cars. You'd think they'd put some of the full size in the standard row and the mini-vans in the full row? :confused3

Lol I love his reaction umm..ok when you told him you were going to Disney world. My DD did not understand before we went last year but man she sure understands this year. Oh my gosh, I have a feeling we might have to try the same deception on Everett. Potty training isn't going so well around here! :headache:

You are right, I'd much rather have him acting up once on terra firma than surrounded by people that can't escape. Unfortunately his bad behavior didn't end there...:rolleyes1

Ah, traveling with a little one. I always seem to have the opposite problem. I am worried about everything going wrong, so I budget way too much time and we end up cooling our heels at the gate for an hour or more. Which is fine with adults, but is trickier with a little one. I always hate to pull out any fun distracting items I brought before we get on the plane- don't want them to get boring too fast!

I'm glad you all made it on your flight and there weren't any airport troubles (aside from the missed exit). I'm absolutely paranoid about being on time (thanks to the military, I'm used to "be there at 3 means show up fifteen minutes early.:rotfl2:) so I would've been having a heart attack leaving 30 minutes late. But alls well that ends well, I suppose.

Aww, maybe by next April Everett will get that pre-Disney excitement! :goodvibes

Wow! I'm so glad you made it in time. I would be totally stressed out all morning. YAY for arriving though! Whew, I got stressed out for you and I forgot things that I was going to say.

Ugh, I know that feeling. I was panicked because we were running behind schedule the morning of our trip, but a slow poke mom sure beats the heck out of the reason we were running late!!!

Poor Everett with his black eye! I love his answer..."Ummm, okay." :rotfl: Toddlers...

As long as your butt was in the seat before the cabin doors close I guess that is all that matters. :thumbsup2

Oh boy your mom would have given ME a coronary. I hate being late anywhere - it really drives me crazy. I think after about 10 minutes I'd have packed up her makeup and said she could do it in the car... :rolleyes1

I HAVE NEVER HEARD THAT ABOUT MILITARY BYPASSING SECURITY LINES (well not bypassing but getting in the employee line)?! WHAT!? Give me more info! Providence airport is a breeze but Orlando sucked! Can I show my CAC Card? That'd be amazing. Where is the employee line?

Awesome to get the minivan (though, I very much dislike minivans, but the space must have been nice!). I'm glad Everett was an angel on the plane, so awesome.

TOO FUNNY about his reaction. I'm sorry he wasn't more excited, yes I would think a 2 year old would be but who knows?!! Playing with friends is probably just as much fun to them...ugh!

Subbing on...

Congrats on your new baby! & Everett is pretty darn cute.

I love your "herd of turtles" description...:rotfl2: been there myself...

I'm curious what your verdict turns out to be...

but I don't think there is any perfect age for Disney...there are good and not so good points of every age...

it's all about your expectations...

I'm guessing that you had an awesome but perhaps sometimes challenging time... (& also with being pregnant -right between your 2nd and 3rd trimesters...)
