Just returned this morning from a 5 night stay at GCV. This was my second visit to Disneyland; however, the first we stayed at a house off-site and this was a much different experience. We visit WDW several times a year and are DVC member and annual pass holders. I am an expert at WDW but I not at Disneyland lol.

GCV- Amazing. The hotel is just beautiful. Reminds me of Wilderness Lodge. Now this is the difference, the staff was so friendly. They always said hi and wanted to have a conversation. I had a birthday button on and it was like they looked for it and went out of their way to say Happy Birthday. We we went to order food from anywhere, they were not rushing you and making suggestions and trying to be helpful. They came up to us at the pool and gave us cupcakes and asked us if we needed anything at all. The have complementary water all over the hotel and pool area so that is very nice. At check-in Linda was amazing and hooked us up with a theme park view. We could watch the parade from our room. Our 2 bedroom villa was incredible. It had 3 full bathrooms. The hotel in right in the middle of everything. It is so easy to walk from park to park. I would never stay anywhere else now. I am so spoiled.

Downtown Disney - Obviously not as big as WDW but it was awesome. We ate at Earl of a Sandwich, Splitsville, Tortilla Jo's, Jazz Kitchen (the Beignets were out of this world), and Sprinkles (several times). All were very good.

Maxpass - I recommend it on a day that you will be spending the whole day in parks. We did it on our first day and were able to ride everything we wanted in the first day. After that we just would go in and do a few things here and there.

Disneyland - Loved it. I feel like I like it more in Cali. I feel like it is more quaint and not as perfect as WDW. But I mean that in a good way. I felt like it had more magic and again cast members so friendly. Many rides were pretty much the same as Magic Kingdom. Some a little different. Small world is so much better at Disneyland. It was so cute. The fireworks are out of this world. Don't miss them. Probably my favorite yet.

Grand Californian - Guardians of the Galaxy was so much fun. I never saw the movie but loved it. RSR was the best ride ever. Toy story was the same. The frozen show was very good but I did like Aladdin better. The nighttime parade was very very good.

I love WDW but Disneyland is so convenient and not having to take buses everywhere is so nice. We did a 5 day park hopper and it was great. We did other things too and would then just hit the park before or after. We went to Laguna and Huntington on check out day and also did the aerial tram in palm Springs. Had an amazing vacation. Weather was not great the first 3 days was 63 and cloudy but after the last day it was 90 so I think I prefer the 60's even if I had to wear my coat. I cannot wait to go back.

Please feel free to ask any questions. I asked many before I left and everyone was so helpful.

Thanks for the review! Glad this trip went so well and a belated Happy Birthday wish!

What a nice review! Sounds like you had an amazing trip-and you made me so excited for our stay in a two bedroom next month! I’m hoping we get a good view, as welll. What room did you have? How was Splitsville?

We had room 5506.

Splitsville was very good. We went twice. My son in law got sushi and he loved it.

Thank you for the review. I too am an AP holder for WDW, this will be my first trip to DLR since 2000. Looking forward to it and sharing it with my grandson!

We are planning a 2.5 day stop there while out west in late Sept/early Oct. Also planning to stay at GC but in a regular room. How much advance planning do we need to do? I'm used to WDW where you have to choose FP, ADRs and all that. I'm hoping to have more spontaneity in DL. We will have 3 day hoppers but we'll be flying to SNA from Las Vegas on a Tues am and arriving around 11am so we'll have the remainder of that day plus 2 more, then leaving that Friday morning. I never really considered visiting DL because everyone I know who had been to both said WDW was better simply because it's bigger. Then a coworker recently mentioned how DL has all our favorites that are in WDW but it's a lot less walking.:thumbsup2 I'm looking forward to our visit.
What attractions make FP a must-have? Since our visit is so short, we probably won't be doing character meals, mostly counter service.
TIA for any tips.

FWIW, some DLR vets say DLR is better because it is smaller. I think both are special.

Very little advance planning needed. Check this thread and the and Newbie sticky thread: "A DLR Guide for WDW Vets" www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1162599

This makes me so happy and excited! We check-in three weeks from TODAY! We're DVC members too and have a 2-bedroom villa for 5 nights. I think I'm mostly looking forward to the proximity of the parks. And now I'm off to find the map someone made of the GC and see where 5506 is!

I found it! 5506 looks like a prime location. Now I need to put in a call to Member Services, but I figured I'd wait and not try to call on a Monday.

We didn't do any advance planning. If you purchase MaxPass, you can't make fast passes till you walk through the gate. If you are staying at GC everyday one park will open an hour early. I recommend going early you can easily get 3 things in before the park opens. We did RSR, Guardians, Toy Story and back to RSR. I would get the max pass for one day and do as much as you can and then go from there. We did it the first day and got everything done that we really wanted to do. Then just went in here and there and did some others.

We only did counter service and Downtown Disney and didn't make any reservations for anything. It was really nice just to wing it.

How do you know you are getting 5506 or any particular room? We are renting DVC points for GCV (my 1st time doing that) and am thus new to all of this. :goodvibes

They won’t know what room they are in until checking in. Requests can be made and noted on the reservation by the owner, but are not guaranteed. Good luck!

Max pass allows us to make fp from the app right? If we don't buy it, we use paper fp, correct? Can I buy MP for all 4 of us through the app?
Also I plan to read the entire newbie thread to be as prepared as possible but am I confused that when you buy a 3 day ticket, you can only go to Magic Mornings once? or is that only for those staying offsite? Can onsite guests go to MM every day? Dh would so love that. He is such a morning person; the kids not so much. ;)

Also what is RSR?

Thanks for your tips.

Trey, we have rented numerous times and has always gone very smooth and if I want a room in particular I have asked and received. You will love it.

Hey Jack, so we are getting a one BR suite. It would be awesome to have a DCA view from a high floor. Any suggestions?

I assume I have to backtrack to the DVC owner and ask them to request a room on my behalf?
