I have learned for a fact that Disney World’s Space Mountain is a tribute to the movie 2001: a Space Odyssey. Although it is being refurbished, you would have noticed many similarities between the ride and the film. For example, the shape of the long and large spacecraft during the lift hill is a parody of the Discovery One. The spool-like corners at the ride’s boarding area is a copy of the axle area of Discovery One’s large revolving room. The blue-strobe tunnel at the start of Space Mountain is a clone of Discovery’s red tunnel. There are other similarities that you could find yourself. If you are a fan of 2001, you are going to love Disney World’s Space Mountain even more.

Does anyone know when exactly Space mountain will reopen?
Like most major projects the end date is only a guess because unforeseen problems can arise so you won't get an exact date for the reopening. The latest rumor is it will open sometime between Thanksgiving and Christmas with hopes it could be open for Thanksgiving. However it could be delayed until well after the first of the year if problems arise. I know it's nice to know the reopening date for vacation planning but unfortunately you're not going to get one.

Most of the Disney related websites, including Allears.net, WDWmagic.com, LaughingPlace.com & ExploretheMagic.com, are currently reporting a reopening date of November 21st. Of course this could change is something unexpected happens during construction...but my dd is excited that there is a good possibility that it will be reopened by the time we arrive there on Nov 28!!!!

This relation doesn't surprise me. Considering that Space Mountain was several years in the making, even back when Walt was still alive in the mid-1960's, and was built by 1975, there wasn't very many truly realistic space films at that point IMO.

Aww man! I'm planning to visit WDW this September. I'm still hoping that Space mountain will open in that month.

I hope they take their time and make it really awesome... As good as Disneyland. It would be worth the wait.
