WDW Should Not Open in July. Discuss.

Masks were something I saw split on who was wearing them voluntarily vs required by the store in my area but even within stores that required them or people wearing them voluntarily there was always people wearing them improperly so wearing one isn't the whole story. If people are 100% perfect where you're at with wearing the mask properly (not under the chin, not under the nose, not moving around a ton), cleaning the mask regularly, carrying multiple ones with them to change them out, not touching the mask on while it's on that is very commendable and an example for what other places should be doing.

Well, I can't voucher for how proper they are with them. Honestly I don't care how "clean" they keep their own mask. I care that they have one on and it's sufficient for stopping anything that propels out of their mouth or nose when they sneeze or cough. If they don't know how to use a mask and infect themselves by letting the surface touch their mouth, nose, face or hands, well, I don't what to say. I just want it on them to function as its primary purpose--reduce the trajectory of their respiratory particles.

I will say that I have seen several elderly folks, mostly ladies, pulling the mask down below their nose.

I find the *mentality* (for lack of a better word) of people in different regions to be so interesting and curious. Quite the psychological study it would make. Where I live in Virginia, we have pretty much 100% mask compliance. In the very early days of our mask mandates, there was a stray one or two people I saw who didn't have one on, but that changed after about the first week.

Honestly with so much mask compliance here, I think anyone who has a differing opinion in my area doesn't have the cajones to waltz in and try it. There's plenty on our local Facebook pages screaming about it, but I guess in person they are wimps.

I’ve started doing online grocery ordering from our Walmart because I’m scared to walk in their stores anymore. I’d say maybe 25% of the people were wearing masks, and about half of those wore the mask under their nose. Including the Walmart worker who has now twice loaded my groceries. Sigh.

Keeping it clean is important, the more dirty it gets the less effective it gets, same as touching it, it makes it less effective and that's not only about protecting the wearer.

Just putting a mask on does not in fact mean it's serving the purpose it is supposed to. We should care both about compliance in wearing one but wearing and caring for it properly too because those affect how effective it is.

I was hoping you were going to say NOVA! My niece lives in Chantilly and is 7 months pregnant. Reports are coming out about high rates of hospitalization for pregnant women who get Covid, so she’s been getting pretty worried. I’ll tell her that you’re seeing a lot more compliance with masks in your area. She definitely doesn’t want to come to my area! The non-mask wearers here won’t even socially distance.

It's not just hospitalizations of Covid positive pregnant women. In at least some hospitals, newborns are whisked away from their Covid positive mothers at birth and are isolated with other babies of Covid positive mothers. I would be worries about the ability to immediately bond with my baby .

Maybe if the other states and cities start quarantining residents when they come back from FL?

This is put out by the Texas Medical Association....rating how risky activities are with respect to catching the virus. Visiting a theme park is considered "High Risk".

Did you know that the numerical value of five percent is 0.05 ? We are saying the same thing. I rounded up as well.

What's interesting is this number would be way lower if everyone got tested. I, along with my doctor, am pretty sure my entire household had it but it was early in April and they were not testing low risk people. When you have a higher number of asymptomatic cases it reduced that death percentage.

It is also known that people under 45 years old have a nearly 0% of dying from covid-19.

I called in early March with a fever, cough, and aches and was told I was not a candidate for testing lol. I also had a student who had traveled to Vietnam and went through multiple airports in places that were high risk; I too think we all had it earlier this year, as we were all very sick.

For as difficult as this pandemic has been on all of us, it's just so much harder for those of you who have children. I have one sister who lives in the same town as me. The kids are allowed to visit with their friends outside, at a distance, with masks on, but not allowed to go into anyone's house. They go to the beach with their friends families during the week from time to time. But my sister drives them and picks them up because she doesn't want them in anyone else's car. My sister and brother-in-law plan, for now, to send them back to school in September.

My sister in North Carolina is more freaked out by all of this and has only allowed a few outside interactions with kids. My nephew is very high functioning, but is on the spectrum, and occasionally has impulse control, so my sister has to supervise interactions, especially now. I so feel for him because he's made amazing strides in social interactions and my sister can see that this has already set him back. His birthday is next week, and my sister is surprising him with a big outdoor blow-up movie screen, so he can have friends over for outdoor movies this summer. It's something I guess.

But I feel your pain, and you're a good Mom...not a mean one. Hang in there.

Thanks for the encouragement. For my 7-year-olds birthday, the class did a Zoom party, so that was nice lol. I am just glad that I have two girls 7 and 9, so they can play together-they are becoming really close through all of this; my 9-year-old has a friend who is an only child and the mom is always asking if she can come over and spend the night, but I am not ready, we have done some outside play dates such as biking, but I just can't see a sleepover as being safe yet. We are traveling to WDW, so I want to be sure we are all well, but it is hard, she lays the guilt on thick!

No it should not be open yet. And there should not be any fireworks with big crowds this weekend in the USA. You need to get this virus under control first.

Someone earlier in the thread said it is likely Disney will open just to close again and I think that is what will happen.

I predict they will be closed back up before August and likely remain closed at that point until 2021. Vacations and travel in general really shouldn't be happening because it is what moves the virus from high risk areas into low risk areas. Vegas should shut down the casinos to keep travelers away, same for beaches, theme parks, conventions. Basically every city should be doing their best to keep anyone not living there the heck out. Please, don't visit, we will be here next year.

I'm not planning to leave the counties surrounding my house until with fall or, more likely, next year.

I can see Nevada has fast rising cases, but are all those attributed to Vega? I just realized with all the discussion of FL, AZ & TX, I haven't seen any news regarding NV.

No idea. Sounds like you know a lot more about it than me.

I had the CDC link saved from a few weeks back. They seem to have updated their verbiage to just say "allow outside air". The part about switching the intake is gone. Perhaps they jumped the gun.

I can see Nevada has fast rising cases, but are all those attributed to Vega? I just realized with all the discussion of FL, AZ & TX, I haven't seen any news regarding NV.

The casinos not opening isn't about NV numbers. It is about the people from everywhere else that goes to NV, interacts with hundreds of people from dozens of places, and transports the virus back where they are from.

Vacation spots are a problem not for their numbers, they are a problem because they move the virus all around the country. I'm not catching COVID from someone that lives in Louisiana if we both stay home. If we both travel to the same vacation destination though I very well may.

We have a trip to Florida (Kissimmee) planned in mid-August. To a private vacation home, with it's own pool, where we will sequester ourselves away from humanity for a blissful week. I'm calling it our apocalypse vacation. We will not be going to a theme park.

We did this in June and it was AWESOME! We did grocery curbside pick up from Publix, got some great meals to-go, and drove around Disney property taking it all in. (Which I have to admit was bitter sweet.)

and with that kind of logic is probably one strong reason why Georgia has seen cases grown from 374 on June 07 to over 3,000 yesterday. It appears the people from Georgia don't take this very seriously. To be trapped on a cruise ship if someone in infected would not be fun, and most likey would require you to be restricted to your stateroom, that sounds like fun!!
