I like these responses. I'll have to use this one if I hear that comment again - I'll gladly stay at the Grand Floridian or Yacht Club if you're paying for it.

It sounds like your co-worker already thinks you're spending way too much money on your vacation and is wondering where you're getting it all or how much debt you have. He made a snarky comment out of jealousy. Beware this co-worker in the future. He's not above backstabbing you and may even be talking behind your back.

As for your reply to him, you could have just said, "It may be a once in a lifetime special trip, but I can only afford to splurge so much. It'll be moderate for my family." Or "We prefer the moderates. They're great hotels and we aren't in them all the time, so why pay for extras we won't use?"

Neither of these will change his jealousy, but it'll take some wind out of his snarky comments.

While I consider my "Disney home" to be CBR, for my August cruise I'm splurging and staying in a Value Studio at AKL the night before my cruise. My thinking is Boma will be a nice breakfast to have before leaving for the ship - and that amazing lobby will be a good place to hang out waiting for my bus! But I will have no issues returning to CBR for future trips!!

(I've gone back and forth about it, but my dad finally said "You're saying this is your birthday trip for this year, so TREAT YOURSELF and leave the reservation as-is!!" He knows me too well.)

eta: I'm doing the Studio because even though odds of it being ready when I get there around 11 are slim to none (I know how the DVC ones operate), it is LESS than a standard view (forget pool view or savannah view) room at AKL for the same night. Now... SHOULD a discount come out for the standard view rooms that drops the price, I will be all over that. But for now, Value Studio it is.

It's considered a standard view due to that fencing (people pen) right underneath our balcony. We were on the 3rd floor overlooking the Sunset Savannah. That building you see in the background is Sanaa and the outdoor viewing area. AKL was just awesome and I definitely plan on staying there again!

Oh I have no issues with a standard view as a rule.

It's just that right now the Studio is less expensive!

DCL will pick you up or drop you off at any WDW. After our first cruise, we stayed at Art of Animation. The last time, we stayed at Port Orleans before our cruise. In april, we got with my in-laws so we'll stay in a Art of Animation suite (unless I get a big raise and then could afford a deluxe LOL)

Love the Yacht Club, but at WDW I am rope drop to closing so almost always choose Pop Century. Comfy beds and 1 bus that makes 1 stop.

DCL will pick you up or drop you off at any WDW.

And I wonder if that's it, too. When we were planning our first DCL cruise which we took Feb 2013, I remember longer-ago cruisers being surprised that DCL was "now" picking up from ALL resorts.

Wow, what an odd thing for them to say! We are going on our second cruise in January and for two nights beforehand staying at POR. I was going to choose Poly but couldn't justify the price for literally the 36 hours we will be at WDW!

Is there some unwritten rule about where at WDW CC members are supposed to stay or something? We just took our first DCL cruise this year and are thinking about going to WDW next year. Just had a lunchtime conversation about Disney vacations with coworkers. I mentioned we were thinking of staying at Coronado Springs or Port Orleans, and got the comment - "People that take Disney cruises don't stay in those types of resorts, they usually stay at the Yacht Club or Grand Floridian" and said in a snobby way I might add. Is there really some unwritten rule like that I don't know about? Like taking a DCL is supposed to turn you into a snob or something

If it is a rule of any kind, I would have to say that not many people follow it. Some people stay at AOA, Pop Century, All Star. Some folks do stay at the moderates and deluxes.
Such a generalization indicates some level of jealousy on their part and a lack of understanding of Disney and their multitude and diversity of guests and preferences. You stay where YOU are going to be comfortable and have the most fun for your family and their vacation needs. Same as picking a cruise itinerary, cabin type and length of cruise. It is all about you and your family. And that is all you have to think about.

It reminds me once I had paid more for a savannah view and it was truly horrible. (It was half-savannah half-industrial building with all the noises you can imagine.) I asked to be downgraded or switch resort. They downgraded us, refund me 113$ and in the end, we had a way better view of the savannah with the Standard view.

Stayed at Cabana Bay (gasp...Universal) before my 1st cruise and Wilderness Lodge after. Stayed at Poly before my 2nd cruise and Portofino Bay (Universal) and Art of Animation after.

Oh my -- we've been on 14 cruises and for the majority we stayed at Pop Century ahead of them! Love the lobby, straightforward bus service and decent food court. I'd rather splurge on the Rainforest room!
