WDW-labor day week-NJ families

I wish they would release our calendar, usually not until April.

I have a feeling that the reason our town (Montvale) approved and e-mailed the calendar to everyone is because we have never gone back BEFORE labor day. Last year we went back the Thursday after labor day. I spoke with a few other moms and they are equally surprised they changed this. I am not going to cut our vacation short. Disney comes before school in our family.:thumbsup2

I was worried about Labor Day being late this year and contacted our superintendent the first week of September. She told me that the calendar wasn't created yet for next school year but she has been here for 15 years and there is no reason to start school before Labor Day. I did tell her that a vacation was being planned abd she was very friendly and thankful that I was planning it around school.

We are booked 8/26-9/5. Plane tickets will be bought next month and once bought I won't change dates.

If you're involved in either your kids PTA's or PTO's, usually the President has a copy of the proposed 2015/16 Calendar already, and should be able to let you know...?:confused3

There are going to be a lot of families returning after Labor Day. The week before Labor Day is such a popular vacation week in NJ, especially since parents get the Monday off as well.

We are in wash two Gloucester county. I hope they are not returning before Labor Day. Too late to change our plans now ugh.

We are in WT too buzzmom12! I love travelling then, but DH teaches down near AC & the teachers always go back before Labor Day in his district (I think they may be the only district in NJ where teachers work in August!) & he is a cross-country coach, so we need to be home even earlier.

I bet most of NJ ends up doing this :(

Yep, I think it's very likely. Many public schools are now giving a whole week's break for "Jersey Week" in November, plus two full weeks for Christmas/New Years. If they don't want to go until late June, they gotta start the school year earlier.

I first noticed some NJ schools resuming classes before Labor Day in 2004. Each year when there's enough time between September 1 and Labor Day, more and more schools are joining in.

Back in the Stone Age, schools wouldn't dare try to start before Labor Day, even though they could. They knew that fewer than 10% of the kids would show up.

well I do believe Labor Day is always the first Monday in September so am not surprised calendar worked out for it to be the 7th in 2015.

but I have never heard of schools starting before that. Our schools usually have teachers only report on the day after Labor Day and then the kids on that Wednesday.

going to check on start dates for this fall now

Bernards Township will continue to be after Labor Day.

Kids report on Tuesday the 8th

Our Board of Education website has its calendars posted out until at least 2017-2018 school year

no full week for teachers convention week, only a couple days for mid-winter vacation and a full week for spring vacation.

excess snow days made up during mid-winter or spring vacation days.

length of winter recess (Christmas) depends on what day of the week the holiday falls on but never more than about a week

I know it's just the first day or two, but I think those days are important. The kids and teacher get to know each other. I feel like if they miss it, it's kind of like the kid that missed the birthday party and all the kids talk about it on Monday and they are left out. Silly, I know, but it's how I feel. Work wise they won't miss much, just more social wise I guess.
I'm planning a trip the time as OP and I ended up emailing our superintendent to ask. While she couldn't give me an exact date (board won't release it until April), she could tell me 100% we would NOT start before Labor Day. We are in the Albany, NY area. So I went ahead and booked my trip last night. I have one starting Middle School and two starting kindergarten. I agree with poster above who stated she can't have her kids miss first day for social reasons. First day of school EVER and first day of middle school are a big deal as far as I see it. I would have changed plans if we were starting before Labor Day!

Yeah, I wish they would trim down the vacation days within the year rather than shorten the summer whether in June or September. Summers are so precious in NJ (as I listen to the cold winds howling outside!)

Going with my sister (she is a NJ math teacher), her husband (a NJ phys ed/health teacher), their two kids, and my Mom. Original plan was to go 8-22 but sister said that would not be possible as teachers report earlier than students plus as teachers they need time prior to this to set up classrooms. So we moved our trip to 8-15. This will give them some downtime once they get home and then they can do what they need to as teachers. When she mentioned this causing a change in date I figured that kids in some districts would be starting before Labor Day this year due to the late date.

I too live in Bergen County and noticed that several towns were going back before labor day...while my town has not posted yet, the secretary at the BOE said she was pretty sure the teacher's contract for our town indicated they would be going back AFTER Labor Day. Looking to book 8/29-9/4. As a working Mom, that would be a whole week that I'd have to cover childcare wise before school started as camp ends 8/28. Figured what the heck, might as well be in Disney!

I'm in South Jersey too, and just checked our district website. No start date yet. I too am wondering if we'll start before Labor day too.

My son could care less if he misses the first 2 days of school but my daughter(his twin) isn't that happy about it. I told her not much goes on the first few days of school. I think she just feels a little funny missing and going into new classes. Oh well, it will grow character in her.:thumbsup2

That's the exact argument I used on my hubby, and it worked!!
