I have a feeling that the reason our town (Montvale) approved and e-mailed the calendar to everyone is because we have never gone back BEFORE labor day. Last year we went back the Thursday after labor day. I spoke with a few other moms and they are equally surprised they changed this. I am not going to cut our vacation short. Disney comes before school in our family.![]()
We are in wash two Gloucester county. I hope they are not returning before Labor Day. Too late to change our plans now ugh.
I bet most of NJ ends up doing this![]()
I'm planning a trip the time as OP and I ended up emailing our superintendent to ask. While she couldn't give me an exact date (board won't release it until April), she could tell me 100% we would NOT start before Labor Day. We are in the Albany, NY area. So I went ahead and booked my trip last night. I have one starting Middle School and two starting kindergarten. I agree with poster above who stated she can't have her kids miss first day for social reasons. First day of school EVER and first day of middle school are a big deal as far as I see it. I would have changed plans if we were starting before Labor Day!I know it's just the first day or two, but I think those days are important. The kids and teacher get to know each other. I feel like if they miss it, it's kind of like the kid that missed the birthday party and all the kids talk about it on Monday and they are left out. Silly, I know, but it's how I feel. Work wise they won't miss much, just more social wise I guess.
Yep, I think it's very likely. Many public schools are now giving a whole week's break for "Jersey Week" in November, plus two full weeks for Christmas/New Years. If they don't want to go until late June, they gotta start the school year earlier.
I first noticed some NJ schools resuming classes before Labor Day in 2004. Each year when there's enough time between September 1 and Labor Day, more and more schools are joining in.
Back in the Stone Age, schools wouldn't dare try to start before Labor Day, even though they could. They knew that fewer than 10% of the kids would show up.
That's the exact argument I used on my hubby, and it worked!!Looking to book 8/29-9/4. As a working Mom, that would be a whole week that I'd have to cover childcare wise before school started as camp ends 8/28. Figured what the heck, might as well be in Disney!
