WDW Jan 2011: Who else is doing their first Full then?

DW and I are doing our first Disney Marathon in 2011 too! We're training for the Half but we've agreed that if our training goes ahead of schedule we'll aim for the Full and if that goes well too, we figured we might just do the Goofy!

Call us crazy, loco, nutty, but we are so excited!:thumbsup2

Ummmm....this begs the question....what are you registered for?? :confused3

Ummmm....this begs the question....what are you registered for?? :confused3

fair enough question.. We're registered for the Half. I wanted to make sure, so I called Disney twice to confirm that we'd be able to upgrade to the Goofy if we decide to. If all else fails, we'll still rock the Half and we can always do the Goofy another year.

Will be my first too! So excited!
I too am a little nervous about the long runs and winter. Live in NJ and I am sure some will be on the treadmill too.

Don't worry about doing your training indoors or outdoors - I live in Florida and there were some days I used the treadmill for my long distance miles. As a matter of fact I used the treadmill for ALL my long miles after 13 for the year I trained for my first full. Last year I was able to get out and go further distances outside then the year before - but both years I made it through the full - and with time to spare.

So don't worry about having to do training miles on the treadmill - you WILL make it :-)

We just got back from 5 days at OKW last night. Seems like everywhere we went my husband was saying "And you'll run thru here" and "You'll run up this path." He made this race sound 125 miles long! :lmao:

Judith Ann my dear

Your handsome husband is correct. Not to scare you, but when you've completed the WDW course you'll realize exactly how far 26.22 miles or precisely 42,195 meters is.

Start on EPCOT Center Drive
1 mile then bank right, around and under
Through the toll booths and into the parking lot
Into EPCOT through the front
Through EPCOT and out the side between Norway and China
Backstage EPCOT and back onto EPCOT Center Drive
Past the start line, weren't we here just 4 miles ago?
EPCOT Center Drive and World Drive to the MK
Into the MK next to the Contemporary
Through the MK along Main Street, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, and through the castle from the back
Liberty Square and Frontierland and out the back by Splash Mountain
Florida Way past the Grand Floridian, Wedding Chapel, and Polynesian
13.11 mile point, half-way by the MK parking lots
Right on Bear Island Road and to the AK *** This is the new part to you young lady ***
Through the AK, enter the back and out the side
Along the front of the AK
The LONG out and back on Osceola Parkway
Along World Drive by the DHS
Into DHS backstage behind the TOT and RNRC
Into DHS proper on NY Street
Through DHS and out the front
Past the BW, YC and BC
Into EPCOT backstage and out into EPCOT proper by the UK Pavillion
Around World Showcase
UK
France
Morocco
Japan
USA
Italy
Germany
China
Norway
Mexico
Through Future World and under the golf ball
(You know the rest)
Turn right past the choir
Snake through the trees to the finish !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So are you scared? Because I always am. And terribly excited too. Always.

This will be my first full (I've completed four halfs & will do my fifth in Sept at DL). I decided since I'm making the trip down there - I'll just do the Goofy - yes I've lost my mind. But I haven't signed up yet. I'm waiting on the it to get closer to capacity so I can save my money for a little while longer.

It will be my first full too. I've done three halfs and quite frankly I'm scared to try the full.:scared1: But it seems like its time and I don't want to get to 70 and regret never trying. Hopefully that fear will motivate me to train properly!

I keep trying to talk myself out of it.. but I don't think its working! I just did my first half this year. I had planned it to be princess, but other races had such cute medals that it turned into 3 half marathons in 4 weeks. Now that they are changing the medal for the marathon my brain has really latched onto this idea and is ignoring all my better judgement... so we'll see

it will be my first full! I did the disney half last year as my first half so its fitting disney is my first full! I have run another half since and will run anohter as a trianing run later this year. I am quite nervous!

Just reading Calcio's run down of the race has my stomach in knots! I'm running my first Full in at WDW in January, too! So very nervous but excited at the same time! I ran my first half this past January in WDW, then the NOLA Rock and Roll.....and this fall, I'll run Disney's Wine and Dine. I'm with a running group here in my area and we have a training program to use so I'm going to follow that one. We start in July! Good luck to everyone with training!!!

You are in for the time of your life.

Training will push you through limits that seem so remote today. Depending on your training plan you will have a few pull back weeks in the fall where mileage falls back to 8-12 miles. You WILL finish these short runs and think about how short they felt and laugh as you think about the midsummer and were tied in knots as you contemplated even running 8. Fortunately you will have a few bad runs (yes fortunately). You will learn that no matter how bad you felt on that run you discovered a new inner strength, new tools, a new self confidence about yourself. Just bank these memories – think of them as your tool box. This tool box will be important to you on race day as you come over the All-Star Resort Overpass, the World Drive Overpass, the turnaround at mile 20.5, cambered turn onto World Drive or the last little hill as we run past China. At any one of these locations your body may and more than likely will say enough. If you have followed your training plan, you tool box will be full and you will have the mental toughness to figure a way past the negative messages.

Remember at this time you should plan your work and then work your plan. You may fall off the plan a time or two. These are not catastrophic but need to be avoided, if possible. Consistency is a great ally.

I moved late last year and found my stack of stuff from my first marathon recently in a box that I was about to toss out. I had a log that noted each and every run. I had enough foresight to note feelings in addition to the normal weather, miles injuries, etc. Today I think I must have felt like a real goober back then. I did not realize what little self confidence I had in the late 1990’s It was interesting to read after a particularly bas 10 mile run that I was ready to through the shoes in the trash. I could not figure out what gel to use; or how to use it. I do not remember this occurring but I did not run for 3 weeks in a row due to my self-negativity. Funny, as today I do not recall all the trials I noted in the log. I think I will keep the log as proof that marathoning has changed me.

Keep up the good work and training starts real soon. See you on the course in January

Charles....:worship:... I shall keep your words of wisdom in a little notebook where I have kept many posts from one of my best friends and my racing mentor, Craig (Calcio) over the past four years as he encouraged and supported me during training for my Halfs. Thank you for sharing and I sure as heck hope you're right! :goodvibes

plan your work and then work your plan.

Are you my running coach? She says this ALL the time! :thumbsup2

GREAT advice! THANK YOU so much! :worship: I am going to print out what you said and keep it close during my time of training!

It gave me chills to read! Thanks again!!!!

:yay:
My first marathon. I figured if I was going to do one I would do it in my favorite place.

Hey all,

This past January I did my first full at WDW after doing the half last year. First off...."What Charles said! He is a wise master.

Deciding to do the marathon, signing up and training...hmmm...which was the most stressful? It takes courage to submit the application, and for those of who have done it, Congratulations!

Sometimes (okay most of the time) I think the mental toughness required for a marathon is more than the physical toughness and preparation. So try and stay positive, throughout all of the ups and downs.

When race day comes, "check in" with yourself. Adjust to what your body is telling you, race accordingly and finish strong.

My experience? The race felt entirely different from the training. I developed blisters by mile 16 and worked hard mentally to make it to the end. I adjusted my goals part way into the race and concentrated on running steadily and finishing with a smile on my face. Which I did. Yeah!

Post-race aches/pains was also way more than I had ever experienced--despite my religious refueling/stretching/etc. Thank goodness for the handicap bathroom my room at BCV had!

But here's the thing....I am planning on a fall marathon this year. I am proud of my race at Disney, and learned a thing or too to carry with me on the next one.

And young or old, walker or runner, you can do it. It took me to age 51 to believe the old saying (paraphrase) "If you believe you can do it, you can"

Good luck,everyone.

Maura
