WDW GPS Coordinates list for Lightroom!

It's amazing how the littlest things can mess something up. I must have spend and hour or two just trying to figure out how to add GPS locations into Lightroom. I dropped in the required latitude and longitude coordinates, but Lightroom wouldn't recognize them! I ended up realizing that Lightroom requires an N (North) at the end of the latitude and a W (West) at the end of the longitude. Once I figured that out and how to get exact latitude and longitude coordinates out of Google Maps things went relatively quick.

I started out just wanting to add a few few GPS locations to some photos in Lightroom and a few hours later ended up with the list below:

The above GPS coordinates also work in iPhoto and I'm sure they will work in other applications.

There are actually a few ways of adding GPS coordinates to your photos that are somewhat easier than the way you're doing it. Sounds like you are manually finding GPS coordinates on Google Maps, manually editing those GPS coordinates, and manually entering them into your photos in Lightroom.

I'm not sure what version of Lightroom you have, but the most recent versions make it easier to "drag and drop" your photos onto a map for automatic geo-tagging. Lightroom 4 & Lightroom 5 both have a new "Map" module. In it, your photos are all presented in a filmstrip, and you can drag your photos onto the map, and Lightroom will automatically associate those GPS coordinates with your photo!

Another way of doing this is using Lightroom plug-ins. If you're familiar with Lightroom plug-ins, you can use Jeffrey Friedl's "Geoencoding Support" plug-in (link). After setting up the plug-in, you can open up Google Earth, and wherever the crosshairs are pointed at in Google Earth, the plug-in can take those GPS coordinates from Google Earth and automatically associate them to your photo. It's a little more of a manual process compared to what I described earlier, but it's still better than manually extracting GPS coordinates and manually entering them into Lightroom.

Perhaps the best way of doing this is if you had a dedicated GPS receiver, such as one from Garmin, for example. You can certainly use your smart phone GPS, especially if you have an app that records a GPS tracklog for you throughout the day. But the danger of using your smart phone GPS like this is that it drains your battery extremely quickly.

Using a GPS receiver (ex. from Garmin), it will record a GPS tracklog for me all day long while I'm roaming around Disney World. When I get back to the hotel room, I download the GPS tracklog (a simple text file) onto my laptop. I open up Lightroom, use Jeffrey Friedl's plug-in, and let Jeffrey's plug-in automatically associate each and every photo with its corresponding GPS coordinates. The computer matches up the exact times for each photo with the exact times on my GPS tracklog. The result is that ALL my photos are instantly geotagged literally within seconds! I never have to mess with complicated GPS coordinates!

I can only imagine how much time it took you to manually find GPS coordinates on Google Maps, manually edit each and every GPS coordinate, and then manually enter those GPS coordinates into Lightroom. I realize it's probably a labor of love, but just wanted to let you know that there are several much MUCH easier ways of doing this.

Well that makes me feel kinda dumb. This was the first time I've played around with GPS in Lightroom 5, my previous experience was a few versions earlier and I remembered it as not being very easy. I tried a few things and couldn't get it to work! I can't believe I didn't try dragging and dropping which should have been the first thing I tried, maybe in part because my photo thumbnails panel on the bottom was closed. I knew there had to be an easier way than what I did!

The bad news was that I spent over half a day adding GPS coordinates to my photos, but the good thing is that I'm done with it and have a somewhat worthless list to go with it!

That's awesome! I haven't dug deep into the Maps module, since I've been doing well using the plug-in I mentioned earlier. But that's great that you can also import a GPS tracklog (.gpx text file) into Lightroom, and Lightroom will automatically associate GPS coordinates to all your photos (based on similar timestamps).

I learn something new every day!
