Does anyone remember the name of the cocktail lounge that was in the Contemporary Resort in the same location of where Chef Mickey is now?

My wife and I had stopped by on a number of occasions during the 70’s. I believe it may also have had live entertainment.

That was during the same time period in which they had the night club which hosted top named entertainment on the top of the Contemporary Resort where the California Grille is now.

The restaurant on the top of the Contemporary Resort was Top of the World.

Here is an overview of the Contemporary of the past...you will find the area of Chef Mickey's was actually part of the Terrace Buffeteria, but here is a review of items of the past.

Restaurants at the Contemporary:

Coconino Cove: This lounge was also referred to as Coconino Grove in the 1986 edition of Cooking with Mickey.

Concourse Grill: Later called the Concourse Steakhouse.

Contemporary Cafe:This precursor to Chef Mickey's had character breakfast and dinner.

Dock Inn: This was a seasonal snack bar by the marina.

Gulf Coast Room: One of the select Walt Disney World restaurants that required jackets for men (Top of the World also required them). It closed on May 28, 1988.

Mesa Grande Lounge: This was later called the Top of the World Lounge.

Monorail Club Car: This lounge overlooked Bay Lake.

Pueblo Room: This eatery featured breakfast, lunch and steak dinners. It later became part of Chef Mickey's.

Terrace Buffeteria: Also known as the Grand Canyon Terrace. It featured buffets for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It later became part of Chef Mickey's.
Terrace Cafe: Featured dinner buffets.

Top of the World: Also known as the Top of the World Supper Club. It featured celebrity entertainers and dancing until 1981 when a show called Broadway at the Top premiered. The entertainment charge for this show in 1981 was $7.50 for adults and $3.75 for children age 3-11. Dinner cost between $9.50 and $13.50. There was a Sunday brunch (with the fondly remembered "make your own" strawberry shortcake) and lunch during the day. There was also a lounge for sipping drinks while watching fireworks. Top of the World closed September 30, 1993 became the California Grill in May of 1995.

Coconino Cove - I still have a brochure from my first visit to the World, in 1974.

Wow--talk about a trip down memory lane!! We saw Billy Eckstein at the Top of the World Supper Club--I know Rosemary Clooney appeared there, among others.

Thanks for the info....Mesa Lounge was always a favorite place to end a long day at the park.

Where was the cocktail lounge that was called "The Outer Rim"?

I seem to remember The Outer Rim just about eight or nine years ago... it was right outside where the Concourse Steakhouse is now.

Does anyone remember anything about the Gameroom in the Contemporary Hotel in the early 80's? I seem to remember a great huge gameroom with a shooting gallery as a kid and I thought it was close to the monorail. However, when we stayed at the Contemporary 2 years ago the gameroom was small with no shooting gallery and was located pretty far away from the monorail by the small "food court". It seemed on the weak side from what I remember it being as a kid. Do things just look smaller as an adult or did they move and shrink the game room? Just curious, thanks!

I remember a gameroom at the Contemporary in 1978. It was a huge room and you were not able to see the monorail from there. There were lots of air hockey tables and other games. I also remember a caricaturist was there to draw your picture.

I spent quite a bit of time in that gameroom. I remember it being on the lowest level, but I may be wrong and it was quite a large area. This would have been during my trips in 1979 through the early 80s. Lots of PacMan playing back then.

The game room was HUGE in the 70-80s, and it was located on the lowest level of the hotel. It isn't just because you got older it appears smaller; it really is smaller, and a LOT lamer than it used to be. They had a movie theater too (I don't know if this is still there) where they played different Disney movies every day according to a printed schedule. This was before VCRs were very common, and I remember having "play days" at the Contemporary where we would swim, play in the arcade, and watch movies all day.

I spent many hours in that game room! Our family on every four trips would have our caricatures done.....dad and I would have massive air hockey games! It was THE best!!!!

Ahhh memories :teeth:
