Me, Wendy 35 year old High School Biology Teacher
Mum, Doreen, 72 year old going through her second childhood!
Well this was our usual summer extravaganza! I save all year to spend a month in the US and usually spend some time in either WDW or Disneyland. For the past 5 years we have also done a DCL cruise. So with the Magic moving to the West Coast for the 50th celebrations we decided to do all 3! Well I decided to do all 3 – mum just says yes – I pay and she drives so it a perfect arrangement.
I’ve split this report into the three parts but will link them at the end. Be warned they are long!

Well what can I say about this vacation. It was pretty full on Disney – Walt Disney World (WDW), Disneyland (DL) and a Disney cruise (DCL)! However probably the highlights were all the wonderful people I met – both old and new friends!
Wednesday 29th June
Finished school with prize giving – the last few weeks had been hectic, first year activities week, cadet camp (which involved staying over night in a nuclear bunker AND not being allowed to sleep!) etc. I was supposed to go in the next morning but I got permission to fly off instead – there were no pupils in so nobody had to cover for me. Prize giving finished at 4.30 and we were at the airport by 6pm after a very quick shower! Got the luggage checked in – pity we had to pick it up in London as we had to stay overnight. There was a delay and we reached London by 10.30am but it took ages to get through the taxi queue, however it worked in our favour as we got a gem of a taxi driver who even carried our luggage into our hotel for us. The Sheraton Skyline was gorgeous – such a pity we only spent 5 hours there! I got it through Priceline so it was still worth. Front desk booked our taxi for the morning and the concierge took our luggage to the room. This room was amazing – 2 huge beds and a lovely desk – bathroom was huge too! Quick drink and then time to collapse before our very early alarm call.

Thursday 30th June
Up at 4.30am. Our personal concierge took our luggage down to our awaiting minivan! Checked in by 6am and yet again had to wait for the check in desks to open – no problem with the cases and they went all the way through. Fortunately we remembered to put on the Magical Express tags, as we wouldn’t have had time in Washington to do it. Had a nice breakfast at Chez Gerard, bought some perfume and were boarded by 8am. Everything went perfectly until some stupid little light wouldn’t go out – we took off 3 hours later! Watched Robots waiting to take off. After take off we had breakfast and a free alcoholic drink for our understanding! Then I watched the Pacifier and Wedding Date. We arrived at 1.45pm. They had booked us on the 4.15pm flight to Orlando and as we saw our original flight had been delayed this would have meant we got there first! Well that didn’t work as they rebooked us onto the original flight – which was delayed 7 hours with no compensation.
Finally we arrived at 9.45pm. Magical express was Magical – no line to check in and the bus had us to the hotel by 11pm. We bought the refillable mug, a Caesar salad, kids mac n cheese (I wanted the Mickey shaped plate!), orange juice and cheesecake – I used the Disney Dining Experience (DDE) card and got 20% - this was the only place that ever wanted ID. We were in room 7329, the 80s and it took a while to find but when we got back after being to the food court all our luggage was there – magical!

Friday 1st July Happy Canada Day.
Had Breakfast at the Pop food court – Mini Mickey waffles, bacon and sausage and rainbow toast! We were at Epcot by 10am. Collected fast passes for Soarin then we did the Living Seas. Talking with Crush from Nemo was amazing. So interactive and we both enjoyed it. As usual we walked onto Figment with very little wait and emailed a few people. Then walked onto Honey I shrunk the audience. So glad we got the fast passes for Soarin as the standby queue was already 2 ½ hours long. It was exactly the same as in California but still good. We took a leisurely walk to Canada – it was very humid today. Wished all the cast members Happy Canada Day. I had the beef tenderloin salad and mum had the chicken and maple muffin, I also had a Lablatt Blue – I loved how the DDE card also gave us 20% off of alcohol. We walked passed the UK and then took a boat to MGM – the bus stop back to Pop is much closer there and saves walking back through Future World. It started to rain but it was only light and there was no sign of a thunderstorm so we went swimming in the rain. Then a much needed nap.
Tonight was extra magic hours night at Magic Kingdom and what fun we had. We took the bus and arrived at 8.15pm. They took us backstage to Tomorrow land to avoid the crowds and saw some cool stuff. Did the Tomorrow land Transit Authority (TTA) and watched the crowds. Then had an ice cream and smoothies. We had a great view of Wishes fireworks and then went on to Small World. Also did Haunted Mansion and then started to get peckish so shared a burger at Peco Bills and get a great view of the Electric Parade. We also did Pirates before heading back to the hub and checking out the decorated castle. We then did Stitch, it was good but glad we didn’t queue too long for it – the smell was hilarious though! I did Space Mountain while Mum did TTA a few times – great to have somebody to hold your bag! Then we did Buzz Lightyear and because there were no lines we got to stay on although when the young cast member loading people on spotted us he started to pretend to give us into trouble saying he never expected it of nice people like us!
Mum’s intention had been to go back to the hotel about 11pm but her it was 2am and we were both going strong. We bought a cinnamon bun and some sweets and caught the bus back at 2.10am. We were in bed finally by 3.15am!

Sat 2nd July
We checked out of Pop Century – it’s great because you leave the luggage in the room and they take it to the front for you to pick up later. We went back to Epcot again looking for a friend of our’s, Chelsea, who is doing the College Program. She works in Innoventions but we never did manage to catch her there! We did Living with the Land and then had coffee in the Seasons food court – I love the new selection but getting drinks was a nightmare! We then got the boat over to Morocco and got the boat to the Boardwalk. I had signed up on the Gordon Biersch website and they sent me an email offering me a $20 passport for $10, which meant I got $20 of food for $10. Also days later I got an email for a free meal for my birthday. We shared chicken quesidillas and the pulled pork sandwich and I had a great beer. Our server was excellent. We then picked up the car at the Dolphin – took a while but we eventually got it although I thought it was a bit old for a rental as it had 20000 miles on the clock. Back to Pop to pick up our luggage and then to our timeshare at Westgate Lakes. We were in a villa by 4.15pm. Went to Publix for shopping and had take out from Panera bread – I love that place! – a swim and an early night.

Sunday 3rd July
We had a much-needed lie in and lazed at the pool and the villa – I even got a Sunday paper! We went to the Boardwalk in time to eat at Spoodles at 5pm. I had a Vine salad and a 4-cheese flatbread, mocha crème brulee (yum!) and a cappuccino. Also had a glass of the Happiest Celebration Chardonnay bottled by Buena Vista which I really enjoyed. We always valet park at the Boardwalk but the DDE allows us to do this for free but of course we always tip. It means I can go to more places as it cuts down on Mum’s walking.
We took the bus to MK and took the train to do Hall of Presidents. We watched an amazing firework show – it was the same at the 4th of July one – Fantasy in the Sky. They went on forever and we could hardly see afterwards because of the smoke. Well worth going to see!

Monday 4th July
I had booked into Pop Century for today so we could use Disney transport and not worry about traffic. We had checked into Pop by 9.30am and even got into our room immediately – we were not expecting that! We were given a great room in the 50s Tramp building very close to the food court. We had breakfast – the pancake platter – in the food court and then got the bus to MGM. We just did not want to deal with the crowds at MK and Epcot was too much walking. We did Tower of Terror – in fact we did it 4 times that day! We went back to Pop and shared a flatbread and went for a swim. We went back to MGM and did Terror again and then had our Fantasmic dinner package meal at Hollywood and Vine. This meal was excellent – huge selection at the buffet and great servers. We both loved the desserts. We left the restaurant absolutely stuffed and watched the Stars motorcade parade. Did the Great Movie Ride, rock n roller coaster and terror again! Sat waiting for the 4th July fireworks, which were good and then went to Fantasmic – unfortunately because of the weather they had to cancel it but we had a ball waiting for it!
Got the bus back to Pop and bought some beer and chocolate – this was the only time the DDE card was denied even though the letter didn’t exclude 4th July (I had it to show!) and I had got the discount twice that day already. Trust me to get a manager – it wasn’t the money more the principle that annoyed me.

Tuesday 5th July
Somebody had flagged us down the other night to tell us we had a flat tyre. We phoned Alamo this morning and they told us they would phone us in the room (wish I had a US cell phone) when a repair truck arrived. Of course we had to be out of the room by 11am. Well to cut a very long story short, after two trips to the car care centre, we got a nice new car and with a full tank of petrol – much nicer car to drive as well! Before heading back to the Timeshare we went to Subway for lunch. Went for a swim and chilled.
As we were still registered Disney guests we could get extra magic hours at Animal Kingdom – not Mum’s favourite park so I thought it would be the ideal way to go. However it was still very hot and tonight was when all the FBI were there for a conference. Still managed to do the Safari. Lion King and Dinosaur though. We went to Pizzafari and had an apple pizza and soda first. We ended the evening at Jungle Jims and using the entertainment voucher had a French onion burger – basically soup and a burger and a teriyaki one.

Wednesday 6th July
We met our timeshare rep, Roberta, and were back at the villa by 10.30am. Tried but failed to find Kinkos to print off some emails. Went to Orlando Premium Outlets to do some shopping. Had some Starbucks first and then hit Bass Outlet – my sandals had finally given out. Also went to Ecco – why do we always buy so many shoes! Even got my winter boots. Using a voucher from our travel company I got a free Chinese meal, which we shared. Then went to Ghiradelli at Downtown Disney to share a sundae using the ½ price voucher that Barbara had kindly sent us – we had the raspberry one. Then back for a swim.
Finally found Kinko’s at night and went to Bennigans for a wonderful meal using the entertainment card – salad, fajitas, steak and salmon. Then went to Walgreens where I found some light up ice cubes – never did find others so have now got more off of ebay as they make great presents for family.

Thursday 7th July
My birthday! Went to Epcot and got the birthday badge. Went to get fast passes for Soarin and then did Test Track in the single riders line – the cast member gave us a free switch pass enabling us to go to the front of the queue anytime – we didn’t get a chance to use it so gave it to Debbie and her mum later in the trip. Then I did Mission Space while mum waited. We went to Mexico where I got a “birthday boat” all to ourselves on the El Rio Del Tempo ride as well as being wished Happy Birthday in Spanish. Shared a cloudberry horn in Norway and did Maelstorm – again had the boat to ourselves. Shared spring rolls in China. Went through the preview centre oh Hong Kong Disneyland – it looks amazing, the Jungle cruise is even going to have smells!
We then went to do Soarin and to avoid the rain had a quick lunch – it was lovely, beef flat bread and a cookie. Went back for a nap.
Tonight I was treating us to a meal at Victoria and Albert’s – I have always wanted to eat here and with the DDE discount I could afford it. Wow what an experience. We valet parked and took some pictures by the gorgeous floral arrangements, then went to Mizner’s lounge for a drinker – I had a watermelon tini and Mum had a sprite – well she was driving! It was time to check in and what a wonderful experience we had. Our servers Beth and Bill were great without being too over the top – it was only when we were being escorted to the toilet that we felt slightly uncomfortable! We were next to a table there for a wedding rehearsal. I am so glad I did the wine pairings but if I ever go again I will forgo the port as that did me in – I don’t know how we got home as I do the navigating!!! Each course was sublime even if I didn’t like one of the items – I loved the corn chowder soup with king salmon and just picked out the salmon – the ale that went with was great. I think my favourite was the cheese course – the stilton cheesecake – wow! The soufflé was good but I preferred Palo’s one. It was wonderful to be so spoiled.
We both started off with an Amuse Bouche, which was lobster and mango. Mine was paired with Charles Lafitte Champagne Brut. I don’t normally like lobster but this was nice. I then had apple wood smoked buffalo waldorf with apple walnut vinaigrette, which was paired with King Estate Pinot Gris. I loved the candied walnuts and the buffalo melted in my mouth! Mum had the Serrano ham wrapped shrimp with canary melon sauce. She didn’t like the shrimp and they offered to give her something else but she declined. Then I had Marcho farms veal “Napoleon” with melted leeks and roasted baby fennel paired with Au Bon Climat Chardonnay. Mum had gratin of Dungeness and jumbo lump crab with grain mustard sauce.
For the fish course I had the Brentwood corn cream with King Salmon – I immediately gave the salmon to Mum but I loved the soup! This was paired with Chimnay Ale Peres Trappistes – I really liked this and it was a change from the wine! Mum had the monkfish with artichoke confit and preserved lemon.
I decided that I was going to be adventurous and not have things that I would have normally. So I had the Jamison farm lamb with Laura Chenel goat cheese gnocchi and ratatouille, which was paired with Bodega Pirineos Moristel. Wow I loved this. Mum had the grilled prime filet with a gorgonzola potato crouton ad port wine jus – I liked this too.
For this course I wish I had looked at the wine pairings more carefully as I would have ordered the strawberry sorbet with micro mint which came with late harvest sauvignon blanc – the Banylus Rimage “Les clos de Paulilles” dessert wine which came with my Saint Nectarine, Parmigiano Reggiano and English Stilton cheesecake did me in as it was so powerful! There were adorable champagne grapes and a fig cake along with 2 cheeses and the English stilton cheesecake. I particularly like the little wedge of parmigianno reggiano covered in honey. And the cheesecake was amazing! Hawaiian Kona Chocolate soufflé was good and mum had Orange-scented mascarpone in a chocolate nest to celebrate Soaring opening. We finished the evening off with coffee and friandise.
We got red roses at the end but because it was my birthday I also got a chocolate plate. They even phoned for the valet to have our car ready for us. The original plan had been to go over to MK for a couple of hours but I had enough difficulty walking to the car let alone to the monorail!!!

Friday 8th July
After a lie in we went to Baskin Robbins for ice cream. Then we hit the Dollar store and Wal-Mart. Then we got subs from the Tropical café and smoothies. I also got some bagels from Panera bread. After lunch we went for a swim.
At night we went back to Epcot via the Boardwalk. Mum had liked some Hummel’s and glasses earlier in the week but we didn’t want to carry them the rest of the day so we got them tonight. Also saw the American Vybe. We had some wonderful wine in Italy while waiting for the drizzle to stop and I got some chocolates and cannoli. We got a great view of Illuminations and watched a wedding party too. They were having their reception in the American Adventure Pavilion right afterwards.
We got the boat back to the Boardwalk and then used the meal voucher they sent for my birthday at the Big River Grille. I had some great ribs and mum had chicken.

Saturday 9th July
Hurricane Dennis! We were woken early due to the high winds. We sat by the window (we were protected by a patio) and watched the pool chairs being thrown into the pool. This only went on for a few hours so we were very lucky. We went to Orlando Premium Outlets, as that is close by and hit Starbucks. Went to Moes Southwest Grill and used another birthday coupon for a free meal. We took lots of leftovers back to the room. It even calmed down enough for a swim. We were going to go out in the evening but the winds got up again so we stayed inside and ate popcorn and ice cream – very nutritious!

Sunday 10th July
Got a phone call from Chelsea at 7am with the plans for meeting up. Both of us were very excited to be meeting up again. We dropped off presents fro them at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and then took the first that came so we could get a bus to the Polynesian. The MGM bus came first and I quickly got off when it arrived so I could find where the Poly bus stop was – would you believe the same bus was going to the Poly!! So we got right back on. Of course we were early so we had a look at the shops. I then spotted the Disney cruise desk was open so stopped to ask them some questions. Our tickets hadn’t arrived before we left and for some reason I had even left our invoice at home. I had printed off all the documents but was worried we wouldn’t get into the port. Well the cast members couldn’t have been more helpful and phoned to check what we needed and even gave us luggage tags!
By this time it was ready to meet the Adam’s for lunch – it was wonderful to see them again and we had a great meal. It was hard to believe it was a year since we had met. We went to MK together and watched Chelsea and Hope get their hair cut at the barber’s shop and then watched the parade. We then took the monorail to Epcot and said some very sad goodbyes. We did Figment and then went back to AKL – the lure of zebra domes was too much so we got some from Mara to take back to the villa.
Later on we went to the Outback and had a great meal as usual.

Monday 11th July
We went to MGM this morning and did the Muppet show and then the new stunt show – Lights, Motor, Action! Wow it was amazing but the stadium is very, very hot. Mum had got to sit in the disable section but it was even more exposed. However we got out quite quickly and headed over to the Backstage Lot – their new menu is excellent and we split a kids meal, chicken wrap, apple and caramel. We then did the Disney story before trying to get into the Sci Fi Diner early. We had to wait ages but it was well worth it. We loved it! We shared chilli and a burger and I had a beer and mum had a ginger ale with a light up ice cube. We sat in the front of the car and shared it with a pair of young girls – what fun we all had. Cannot believe we have never been here before.
We then did Tower of terror twice and I did the coaster twice. We had coffee at Barnies and then went to Publix. At night we went to Festival Bay Mall – a good idea but just so empty. We did a little shopping and then had a meal at Caddyshack

Tuesday 12th July
Both went a swim and then e went to Downtown Disney. We browsed the shops and then went to Ghiradelli to split another ice-cream sundae. We then took the car and went to the Westside. I went for a walk and mum went to sit inside Virgin. We had lunch at Wolfgang Puck’s. We shared spring rolls, pizza and butternut squash soup. We then went to the Premium outlets to look again for the ice cubes – still no luck! Headed to Wal-Mart to get the photos burned onto a CD and mum some shoes to wear for the NASCAR ride along – they cost all of $1.87!
After a swim at the villa we headed to Sweet Tomatoes – I have wanted to try this place for years and it was wonderful. All the salad, soup, pasta and desserts you could eat – such good value. The servers were great also. There was a Books a million nearby so I spent some time in there.

Wednesday 13th July
For Mum’s xmas I had got her vouchers for a NASCAR ride along at the Richard Petty Speedway next to the MK. Well of course she was worried about it especially when she realised there was no door in these cars. Anyway getting there was an adventure, as you have to go under the speedway track via a steep descent and then steep ascent. Once you get there you hand over the vouchers and sign the forms and then get into the driving suits – that was fun! Then you head over to the track where they fit you with a driving helmet and harness. Then into the car – I managed to get in ok but coming out was more difficult. I enjoyed it but felt they could have gone faster! Mum enjoyed it too and she got more laps because one of the students cut in front of her driver. I really enjoyed speaking to the crew.
We then headed to the Poly and valet parked. Had coffee and a muffin and then took the monorail to the MK. We did the Country Bears to escape the heat and then Philarmagic – also finally got the candy bubbles we were looking for. Took the boat to the Poly – it was a gorgeous ride over. Had lunch at Kona Café – Island Chicken Sandwich, salmon salad and we split the orange and passion fruit mousse. I had a hard job choosing a dessert s they all looked amazing.
After stopping to check emails we went to Walgreens to get mum more painkillers and then back for a nap. We had a quick look around Lake Buena Vista Factory stores and got some great bargains at the Character Outlet. Then we went to the Hawaiian Rumble mini golf and had some ice cream. We ended up at McDonalds and had the new fruit and nut salad, which was great.

Thursday 14th July
After a long lie we went to the Florida Mall – why do we always forget to valet park here! Had a good day browsing, coffee at Barney’s and lunch at Bucca di Beppo – the portions are huge here even at lunch time! The bargains at Macy’s were unbelievable especially with the 11% discount for international guests. When we got out we could see a thunderstorm was imminent so we headed over to Panera Bread to have coffee but of course the storm didn’t come till we were driving back.
Had an easy night with take out from Panera Bread.

Friday 15th July
Packed and went swimming. Headed to the Boardwalk for about 2.30pm. Looked at the shops and after buying an Italian add a charm bracelet headed to Epcot. We were early for meeting Debbie and her Mom so we had a drink in the Rose and Crown pub – we met a lovely couple from Washington State and we had to dash to be on time. Well Debbie was just as I imagined and we had a ball. Her mom and mine got on great and we took a slow walk round the lagoon to Mexico. We had a great meal together at San Angel and then a look at the shops. We got the boat back to the Boardwalk and chatted for a while waiting for Jellyrolls (a duelling piano bar) to open. What a hoot we had there – Michael, one of the piano players caught onto my Scottish accent and my giggly nature (and that is without drinking!) and played up to it. I was just so sorry we had to leave early but with a 7.25am flight we had to!

Enjoyed reading your report ~ Thanx for posting.

wendym,
what do you mean about the bus stop being closer at MGM vs walking through epcot?

THANKS

Peanut girl
A lot is down to my mum's perception but when we are in Le Cellier all we have to do is walk to the International gateway and get the boat to MGM - takes about 30 mins in the boat but we love the trip. Then when you get off the boat the bus stop is quite close. If we were to get the bus at Epcot we would have to walk back through Future Worls, exit and go to the furthest away bus stop. Doing it this way means my mum is less tired.
Wenhdy

Phew Wendym you really have been busy. You seem to have really benefitted from the Disney Dining card. We have 4 days at the AKL and will spend 3 of those days in the park and one day at Seaworld and dinner with Shamu. Can you give me any information about this such as how much does it cost?, how do I obtian one?, benefits etc...
Your trip report was really useful and I love the way tha you describe the food you have. You must have a memory like a sponge.
Thanks again for any tips/advice
Clare

Hi Clare
When it comes to food I remember - my figure attests to that though! You will love the AKL - we have stayed their twice (only 1 night each time) and enjoyed it. The DDE card is only available to Florida residents or annual pass holders - I have an annual pass and the DDE card costs $50 so you have to spend $250 on food to break even. You get 20% off table service restauarants and a few counter service ones - in Animal Kingdom for example and resorts that don't have table service place. Also free valet parking at the resort you are dining at.
I got it through the disney site and they sent it out to me - took about a month to receive but I think they will tell you where you can pick one up if you are arriving before then.

I love your trip report so far. Your descriptions are fabulous. I'm trying to get to your next report but the boards are down for maintenance. I can't wait to read the rest. Thanks for sharing.

If you PM me your email address I would be glad to email you the rest - all in a word document so it is no problem.
Wendy
