WDW, DCL and DL- aren’t you jealous!!

Cast Me, Wendy, 32, High School Biology teacher from Aberdeen, Scotland
Doreen aka mum, 67, retired

Yes just reading the title must make you so jealous but bear in mind I have saved all year for this. Mum and I always vacation together since my dad died. We have a great system- I pay and she drives. We get on very well- she is as big a Disney nut as I am.

Thursday 28th June
Up at 4am to get the 6.30 flight to Heathrow. My only worry is that they will accept all the luggage- well when you are away for a month you do need a few changes of clothes! Got them checked through to Boston no problem. We then spent 2 relaxing hours in the business class lounge- perk for spending so much money on the vacation- we were NOT flying business class mores the pity.
The United flight to DC was slightly delayed but we made the connection to Boston. For some reason the flight attendants gave us a bottle of champagne- they liked my smile and we had given them no hassle! The intention was that we would drink the champagne on the cruise but it is now in our fridge.
We were met by our town car in Boston and were taken to the Midtown hotel. I wasn’t expecting much but it was very nice- huge room and a view of the Christian Science Plaza. We went for a stroll around the Plaza and then crashed out. We had been up for 26 hours!

Friday 29th June
Woke very early and had left the hotel by 8am. Walked to the Prudential Center for breakfast and then hopped onto the trolley. We visited the Boston Tea party ship and of course threw the tea into the harbour. The re-enactments were very entertaining. Faneuill hall was the next stop along with the Quincy Market- what an assortment of food. The Christmas store was gorgeous. Next onto the USS Constitution. Of course we had to go to the Boston Common and go on the Swan Boats- what a bargain at $2 each. Toured the Cheers bar but couldn’t get near the bar for a drink.
The trolley took us through Cambridge and then we went back to the Prudential Center. At night we took the T (very crowded) to Government crossing and I walked through the Holocaust Memorial. We had a beer at Ames Plow and Kalbasa at Quincy Market before taking the T back to the hotel.

Saturday 30th June
Got the hotel to store the luggage and then went to Copley Place- we had to wait for the stores to open! We then took the T to Filene’s basement- what a place! Of course we spent a fortune to save a fortune.
We walked to Boston Common and waded in the Frog Pond- very refreshing.
We had pizza at California Pizza Kitchen.
Back to the hotel to collect our luggage and get a taxi to the train station. I wish our train stations were as clean and as for the Redcaps- what a boon. The train was spotless and the Redcap got us great seats. It was a lovely journey as we passed through Rhode Island and Connecticut. Checked into the Hotel Edison- small room but adequate- great view of a derelict building!
We ended the evening at the McDonalds at Times Square- the buzz about the place is unreal.

Sunday 1st July
I went to get coffee from Starbucks and then went on the bus tour. We had done the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the Empire State Building before so we were content to take things easy. We had bagels and coffee at South seaport Village and then went onto the Rockefeller Plaza.
Then we did the uptown loop- stopping off at Central Park and Strawberry fields. New Yorkers are so lucky to have this piece of heaven midst all the chaos.
The tour continued through Harlem. After an Indian meal we did the night time loop- the heavens had opened so we didn’t bother getting off the bus. Finished off the evening with coffee and brownies.

Monday 2nd July
Caught the 8am train to Philadelphia. Again a super train which puts our service to shame. Into our hotel room at the Sheraton University City by 10am. The trolley company picked us up and then we did the trolley tour. Passed Independence House, City Hall, Love Plaza and Penn’s Landing. Toured the Liberty Bell and then had a Philly cheese steak at the Bourse. WE then walked round Betsy Ross’s house and Efferts Place.
Went back to the hotel for a swim and went for a wonderful meal at the White Dog Café. I had the most gorgeous organic berry salad and then finished off with a White dog Café Sundae. The highlight of the day was the Lights and Liberty sound and laser tour. You get a headset which you wear as you walk round 4 sites. The music and sound effects were amazing and worth the $17.75.

Tuesday 3rd July
Had breakfast at the Penn Uni bookstore before catching the train to DC. Our train was delayed by a medical emergency but our fantastic redcap got us on the next Acela express for free. On reaching DC I went for a walk to McPherson Square and got some goodies to eat. At night we went to a wonderful Thai restaurant for a meal.

Wednesday 4th July
Independence Day. We went for a tour of Arlington Cemetery and saw JFK’s tomb and the eternal flame. We also saw the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and the changing of the guard. It was so hot but they did it perfectly. Lunch was at the Air and Space museum. I dashed back to the hotel to collect the rain jackets while mum stayed at the mall and people watched. We had decided to stay for the Capitol 4th concert. We saw the rehearsal and although there was a few showers it seemed the rain was going to stay away. SOME HOPE!! Just as the concert went live the heavens opened- we were absolutely soaked but what fun. Barry Bostwick was the host and the Pointer Sisters and Irish Tenors among others sang. We were all sure that the fireworks would be cancelled but at 9pm the 1812 overture started and the fireworks were on. What a display! We managed to avoid the crowds by getting the Metro at Federal Triangle and then got chicken from Popeyes while we tried to dry out.

Thursday 5th July
The Supershuttle bus picked us a up at 10.30am. The United groundstaff at Dulles airport were so nice- it makes such a difference. We were then on our way to Disney World!
Joy met us at Orlando from Tiffany Town car. We had a grocery stop at Publix- stupidly mum let me go in myself. Well we had enough soda to last the rest of the vacation as well as beer and wine. Joy dropped us at the Swan- what luxury to be dropped at the front entrance. We checked in and John gave us an amazing room with a wonderful view of the Boardwalk and Epcot. I got our cruise documents checked- all perfect. I can’t believe these people who haven’t got them filled in before they reach the ship.
People complain there is no Disney magic at the Swan but I must disagree- the cast members are the most helpful I have met and they so want to help and speak to you. The rooms are wonderful- we have only ever stayed at the All Stars before but I could not pass up the great teacher rate. I even got the $99 error rate- for a $350 room!! Mum was in heaven and could have stayed at the window the whole of the 2 days watching the boats go by. As for there being no Mickey soaps- give me the oatmeal bars any time!!
I went to the Boardwalk to get our e ride night tickets (the Disney desk at the Swan was closed)- again another nice cast member. I had forgotten to take our Hopper tickets with me but he believed me and didn’t make me go back for them. I also made Fantasmic dinner reservations for the Brown Derby- I wanted Mama Melrose but all the times were too early.
We went shopping at Downtown Disney and then onto the Polynesian. We ate at O’hana’s- what a spread; we loved the appetisers and the kebabs were awesome especially the sirloin ones. We finished off the feast with the pineapple and caramel dipping sauce. We then got a great view of the Magic Kingdom fireworks and the Electric Water Pageant. We had intended visiting the brick I had got my parents but bed was calling.

Friday 3rd July
We each had a day left on old Hopper passes and wanted to make the most of them. We got the Friendship boat and were at Epcot by 7.30am for early entry. It was lovely walking through an empty World Showcase. We did Test track twice then did Spaceship Earth before exiting for MGM.
I did the Rock n roller coaster 3 times- mum doesn’t like it so I used her fast passes. After breakfast at Starring Rolls we tried our hands at Millionaire. We weren’t picked but I got onto the leader board once.
We took the boat back and had a great lunch at the Dolphin Fountain (made all the better with the 20% DC discount). Then it was time to cool off at the Grotto pool. What a lovely area. I tried out the slide and all the pools. I was also persuaded to get my hair braided. The girl doing it thought it would only stay in 3 days as my hair is so fine. Well 3 weeks and 1 day later it is still in place. It is finished with a yellow smiley face much to my brothers and sister embarrassment!
After a quick shower it was time to head back to MGM. We had dinner at the Brown Derby- mum had the salmon and I had the maple roasted chicken. It was good but not as good as previous visits. We fitted in the Great Movie ride before heading to the back door entrance for Fantasmic. It’s so great not having to wait for 2 hours and we got great seats.
After that amazing show finished we hot footed it over to Magic Kingdom for E night. Got soaked at Splash, then did Big Thunder, Haunted, Space and Buzz. Exhausted but happy we left at 1am. What a lovely surprise awaited me in our room! Unbeknown to me when I had been getting the cruise documents checked John had phoned my mum and asked if she thought I would mind if he sent me a surprise for my birthday. Well the surprise was a huge birthday cake with mickey mouse on it, on a table covered with pixie dust. Also a card from John. It was such a kind thought and just typical of the staff at the Swan

Saturday 7th July
My birthday. Bags collected at 8am. Lone swim at the Quiet pool. Breakfast at Tubbi’s- this was the only disappointment of our stay. The fruit was hard and the French toast cold. We should have complained but it is not something we Brit’s are good at.
The DCL bus picked us up at 11.45 and we were at the port by 1.30- we even saw a Bald eagle en route. Check in went quite fast- of course being non US we had to hand in our passports. First stop once we boarded was Palo’s. We got the High Tea, Brunch and dinner reservations we wanted no problem. Then we headed to our stateroom-7129. It was a category 11 and it was perfect for the 2 of us. Much bigger than we thought and Nicole our hostess kept it so neat and tidy. We certainly made use of the over the door shoe holder we brought
Our cases had all arrived and so we headed up to Topsiders for the Welcome Aboard buffet. Then we had to check out our surroundings for the next 7 days. The ship is huge and so beautiful, but what amazed both of us was that you could always find a quiet spot to relax- we even had our own “private” veranda on deck 7 aft.
Whilst wandering around we met Kurt (KPB13) and his wife Rhonda in one of the lifts- they recognised us straight away! Having on our lime green ribbons also helped. It was thanks to Barbara that I had these- she very kindly sent me the ribbon- it was the start of a great friendship. It was so nice to meet up with such lovely people.
We headed to the spa. My sister had given my mum the 7 day Rainforest room for Mothers Day. Mum thoroughly enjoyed this- use of the aromatherapy chairs, sauna and steam rooms as often as she wanted. She headed here straight after we got back from the islands- leaving me to trail all the bags back to the stateroom!
I also wanted to reserve the Castaway Cay package- use of snorkel equipment, a float and bike while on the island. We had decided to do only one Disney excursion- the under 2 flags tours on St Marten, so we booked that also.
Then it was time for the lifeboat drill. Fortunately we were in Animator’s Palate for this so we avoided the hot sun. Once this was over it was time for the Sailaway party at the Goofy Pool. This was fun and of course we had to have a couple of Bon Voyage cocktails as we listened for the horn playing “When you wish upon a star”
Next we thought we should unpack- it was amazing how we managed to get rid of all our bags- the cases do fit under the beds. We dressed for dinner- we had late seating fortunately. There was also a birthday card waiting for me in the fish outside the stateroom. It was from Amy and Matt- again we had met through the internet.
We thoroughly enjoyed the welcome aboard variety show. It was fast paced and a good taster of what was to come. The cruise director Jim (England) was excellent and always stopped to speak if he saw you around the ship. We had a drink at the Promenade Lounge and a long chat to one of the servers. She was Thai and her husband worked in the restaurants- they didn’t see much of each other but they enjoyed working on the Magic. I also emailed home but at $7.70 I didn’t bother again!
Now it was time to meet our dinner companions. This was one thing that really worried us. We are so used to vacationing on our own that we weren’t really sure how we were going to like sharing a table with others. We needn’t have worried as they were all super. A brother and his 2 sisters from Oklahoma and a family from Tennessee. Their daughter Sarah was the only child but she coped well.
Our servers were Julliano from Croatia and Will from South Africa. Head waiter was Sid from India- he came round the table every evening to chat. Our first restaurant was Lumiere’s as expected. It was gorgeous but the smell of sea Bass seemed to linger all week. It was wonderful to watch the rose petals fall of in the light fitments. I also loved the different attire the servers had on each evening.
I had the Escargot which were great, the beef tenderloin and the Crème brulee. Then Sid came round and asked us not to leave. Well next I knew he had gathered around about 10 servers and they were singing Happy Birthday and presented me with a cake. What a lovely gesture but I couldn’t eat even a small piece at that point. We got back to the cabin and had crashed out by 1030. We had intended splitting the double bed but Nicole had made up the sofa so I slept on that. Not the most comfortable bed but I was usually so exhausted that I slept as soon as my head hit the pillow.

Sunday 8th July
We had breakfast at Topsiders this morning. I went to the Art of entertaining Series while mum went to the spa. Corey- the Captain’s chef- made Mummy fried prawns. I hate seafood but the salsa was gorgeous as was the wine! This set of series was introduced by Mishka. She used to be a dancer on cruise ships- as could be seen at the Island party- but once she married her husband, Gary (the dining room manager) she changed to this so they could be on the same ship.
She and Corey had a great rapport and these sessions were great fun.
Mum and I then met up to go to the Behind the Scenes lectures. These were given by Dave Goodman from Disneyland. He had such a soothing voice that listening was a pleasure. He also had a few giveaways. Everybody got a Disneyland pin and I won a CD of Tokyo’s electric parade and some keyrings and pins. I also met Dave and Jan form the boards. They were great company and we thoroughly enjoyed speaking to them. We all went to lunch at Parrot Cay for the Italian buffet.
Next was the napkin folding class- sounds boring but it was great fun- we also got a Bahama Mama cocktail. I then met up with mum for High Tea at Palo’s.
This was so elegant. We both chose the hot cinnamon spice tea. First you have finger sandwiches and scones- these were good. Then chocolate éclairs and finally trifle- I could only mange a few mouthfuls of the trifle- thank goodness we had late seating for dinner.
Back to the room to shower and change for formal night. Tonight during the welcome aboard cocktail party we met the Captain and had our photo taken with Captain Henrik. Then it was off to the Hercules show which we both enjoyed.
Dinner tonight was the Masterchefs series at Animator’s Palate. I had the corncake, pork tenderloin and pecan cheesecake. We weren’t so tired tonight so we went to the comedy show at Rocking Bar D and finished a great first day at sea with the desert buffet at Lumiere’s. This looked awesome. Ice sculptures and chocolate models including a train. We just wished we could have eaten more.
Tonight was the first of our towel animals- a different one each evening. I thought we may not get them being adults but Nicole did not disappoint us!

Monday 9th July
Today we started with breakfast from room service- prompt as it was the rest of the week. We just had coffee and pastries as today was our character breakfast at Parrot Cay. The food wasn’t great but the character interaction was wonderful- I just hope the photos come out. I then headed to the pool and mum went to the spa.
Next- more eating! Champagne brunch at Palo’s topped the high tea. You start with champagne and then help yourself to the buffet. This includes cereal, pastries, stolen, fresh berries. Then there is crab and prawns with various antipastos. Then you choose an entrée. I had the pasta and mum had the pancakes. We also had to try the sweet pizza- a very thin base, blueberries and various other fruits with mascaporne cheese. It was gorgeous. We then had the cheek to try the deserts- who could resist them!
I then went to the snorkelling demo at the Goofy pool. I have never snorkelled and intended to try it at Castaway Cay. I got a few pointers including to spit in your mask to stop it misting up- I would never of thought of that. Then I did the walking tour of the ship. It was about the themeing of the ship and I learnt a lot. The only bit of the ship I do not like is the huge chandelier in the main atrium. Well that cost over $1million and the artist recreated the whole atrium in his workshop to ensure the chandelier would fit in.
I finally got the chance to meet Amy and Matt- you would have thought we had known each other for years and her son was so nice and well mannered. Would you believe they had exactly the same servers as us at the early seating!
C’est Magique show was good and better than the previous version.
Tonight dinner was in Parrot Cay. This was the only disappointing meal of the voyage. The starter was good but there was at least a 20 minute wait for the main course. It didn’t help that Julliano was looking after somebody elses tables also. Also the steak was tough. The bananas flambé was good.

Tuesday 10th July
Topsiders for breakfast today. Then we met in Studio Sessions for the bus tour of the island. We both thoroughly enjoyed this. We stopped off at the International lookout and got some great photos (hopefully). Then we had an hour at the French capitol- Magriot. We strolled through the market and then had a cool drink. Then we enjoyed more of the island. The bus driver was very informative and got my vote because he didn’t ask for a tip- of course he got a better one.
Lunch was back at the ship and then we headed into Philipsburg. We did some shopping and then had a drink at the Kangaroo Court Café. I went for a swim at Great Bay. Mum headed back to the spa and I went to the pool. The adult pool was great and rarely crowded.
Dinner tonight was at Palo’s. I was convinced to order the most expensive bottle of wine I have ever heard- and it was worth it. I had the Portobello mushrooms on polenta and the ravioli. Of course we both had the hazelnut soufflé and
they also brought the tiramisu. We were sitting next to Jim and Theresa from the crew and although they were both of duty they made a point of speaking to us. We went back to the cabin full and slightly tipsy. We got changed into island attire and headed to the party. We had great fun watching and who walked by but Jim, he recognised and even commented on our change of attire.

Wednesday 11th July
Today we had to be up at 6.15am for immigration- it all went very smoothly and we were back in our cabin by 6.45am. I grabbed some breakfast from topsiders and then it was off to St Thomas. We caught a taxi to get the 9am Red Hook ferry to Cruz Bay and then a taxi to Trunk Bay. This was heaven on earth and just what I imagined. Clear blue sea and white sands. We had plenty of time before our SNUBA expedition so we went swimming. Then it was time to meet our guide- Frank. It was just the 2 of us and it was wonderful. He had so much patience- mum was very nervous and although an excellent swimmer is not keen on putting her face underwater. He put her totally at ease. We had an hour’s tuition and then it was into the water. It was so liberating swimming with the air hose but no air tank- this was on a raft. We could get right down and we saw so many different types of fish and coral. The colours were amazing. The hour went by so quickly. We then did the journey in reverse and headed to the Havensight Mall in St Thomas. Mum got a gold necklace and we bought some presents- all got back intact.
I headed to the Sailaway party while mum went to the spa- again! One family managed to miss the ship but a small boat brought them alongside.
We later found out that a stupid teenager had been dared to jump into the harbour. He had done so and had narrowly missed the propellers. I hope his parents punished him. That was the only criticism of the cruise. Even though the teenagers had Common Grounds they still thought it was more fun to hang out at the elevators and stairwells. Now I deal with teenagers every working day and although I expect them to enjoy their cruise I do not want to have to work my way round them and put up with their rude, arrogant behaviour. Please and thank you seemed to be forgotten phrases. Ok off my hobby horse now!
Who want to be a Mousketeer was fun but we weren’t choosen. We also went to bingo but again no luck.
Dinner was at Animator’s Palate and tonight we got the show- it was good and I loved the waistcoats the servers had on. I had the Caesar’s salad, sirloin steak and strawberry shortcake.

Thursday 12th July
Breakfast at Lumiere’s today. It was lovely and very relaxed. Then I went to the cookery demonstration- he was using a $50 bottle of truffle oil- because it was expensive and “he wasn’t paying for it!” I left early to go to the Captain’s Corner- mainly to get a ticket for the bridge tour in the afternoon. The Q & A was interesting though. I then went to the last of Dave Goodman’s talk but we had to leave early for Palo’s. They had offered us another brunch on Monday and we couldn’t turn it down! This time I had the omelette and mum had the sweet pizza. We were totally stuffed but they came with more tiramisu. It would have been rude not to have it!
It was a busy afternoon as I wanted to do the Galley tour and the Bridge tour. The galley tour was fascinating and it was taken by Chef Steve, a fellow Scot. The galley’s were tiny for all the people who work there. We got a freshly baked cookie which was delicious. Everything is freshly made apart from the Mickey Mouse bars. The bridge tour was also good- First Officer Andy (another Scot) had just come off duty.
The Disney Dreams show was excellent- no wonder people have tears in their eyes when exiting the theatre. The Captain’s Gala at Parrot cay was excellent- I had the grilled vegetables, beef tenderloin and chocolate lava cake. Tonight I forced myself to go to the cinema- there were so many films I wanted to see but I only managed to see one- Pearl Harbor. I finally got to bed at 1.30am.

Friday 13th July
Another room service breakfast- I sure was going to miss this. We watched the ship docking at Castaway Cay- what a gorgeous island. We were one of the first off the ship and managed to get an umbrella on the family beach. I collected the snorkelling gear and then tried it out. I had fun walking in the flippers but finally got the hang of it. I saw most of the items on the trail but didn’t find mickey mouse. We hit the shops- thank goodness we didn’t leave it till later in the day. They even deliver the parcels to the ship. I went back to the post office to post some cards. They arrived back in the UK within 2 weeks. Cookies BBQ was the next stop- those hamburgers were great.
We then headed to Serenity Bay- it was a lot quieter but the beach was quite steep. We were glad we had worn our water shoes. The heat was getting to us so we headed back to the ship by 3pm. The island was wonderful and we were so glad we had made it there.
Unfortunately an elderly gentlemen had a heart attack this afternoon so we had to stay at Castaway Cay till a helicopter could airlift him to Miami. This was delayed by high winds so it was 9.30pm before we left.
I went to the Disembarkation talk and then stayed to watch the children’s show. I had tears in my eyes and none of the children were mine! I am so impressed by the kid’s clubs counsellors- they have such patience. They certainly could get the kids to behave.
After heading back to the stateroom to change it was time for the farewell variety show. We had enjoyed all the shows in the Walt Disney theatre and this was no exception. Our final dinner was in Lumiere’s and it was It’s a small world dinner. The servers waistcoats were wonderful and the flag show they did excellent. All week when ever anybody dropped anything a great roar went round the dining room. Well we suggested Julliano did it so we could give him a cheer- what a laugh he and the rest of us had. Tonight I had Greek salad, Quesidilas, prime rib and Baked Alaska. We handed out the tip envelopes and although we hoped to see everybody the next morning we said our goodbyes.
I went for a final tour of the ship- we had packed earlier and put our bags out by 10pm. I couldn’t understand how people had them ready by 6pm though!

Saturday 14th July
We were going to be late arriving back at port so immigration was delayed until 8.15am. This was pushed back but we were finally finished by 9.15am. This meant we missed our sit down breakfast at Lumiere’s. We couldn’t have got through the crowds in the main atrium anyway though. We headed back up to Topsiders for breakfast. Fortunately the gentleman was recovering from the heart attack.
We finally disembarked at 11am. All credit to Disney- they opened up the children’s clubs, had coffee and juice stations set up. The Captain even personally said goodbye and apologised for the delay. We grabbed a porter and caught the Budget shuttle to pick up our hire car. We were very sorry to leave- the cruise had been MAGICAL!!!
We were in Orlando by 2pm. We checked into the Westgate Lakes. I had found an offer on the internet 2nights for $99 refunded after a 90 min tour. I also paid $80 for an extra night. We had a studio flat with a kitchen, king size bed and a Jacuzzi in the bedroom- too many mirrors though!
Just as we were ready to leave the heavens opened. We changed our plans and headed to the Belz mall- this cost us money! We then went for an Indian and onto Universal Studios. I had bought the 4 park flex ticket. We just had time to do ET and Back to the Future. We then crashed back at the studio.

Sunday 15th July
Today we had to do the timeshare tour. I was already to say no and was looking forward to going to Seaworld. Well it was very convincing and we were put under no pressure. Much to my surprise but delight I am now a proud owner of a 3 bedroom lockoff in August. What clinched it was that we could exchange if for the Disney ones. We were driven back in a stretch limo to our car and then headed to Celebration for a meal. I must add that at no point were we put under pressure.
Finally got to Seaworld at 3pm. Saw the sea lion show and toured the sharks and aquariums. I went to Journey to Atlantis and just as we were walking to Wild Arctic I met a colleague from school- I didn’t even know he was going to Orlando.
We finished off the evening with Shamu’s Big Chill and the firework and laser show.

Monday 16th July
We went to the new owner’s welcome breakfast and then headed to Downtown Disney for some shopping. I had treated myself to a DCL watch but it was too big- the watchmaker managed to take the links out for me. We stopped at the Gourmet Pantry for coffee and pastries and then headed to the Orlando Premium Outlets. These are much better than the Belz ones. Wonderful food court also.
Finally made it to the pool and then headed back to the studio for a nap- all these early mornings were starting to take there toll. I had made a PS reservation at Boma in the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Wow that hotel is impressive.
We arrived in plenty of time so we could tour the lobby and the first of the savannas. It is stunning and reminds me very much of the Wilderness Lodge. The rocking chairs are great. We then headed to Boma fortunately very hungry.
The first pod/station was desserts but we did restrain ourselves and started off with fruit and dips. Then it was salads and the roasted tomato soup. The main courses were good but I preferred the salads and soups. I had the zebra dome and loads of other pastries- our favourite was the passion fruit meringues. We also had the Kenyan coffee- more the strength we are used to back home.
Absolutely stuffed another walk was called for. We walked round the pool area and the other savannahs before looking round the shop. I loved this resort and would love to stay here some time.

Tuesday 17th July
Checked out of the timeshare and checked into the Hard Rock Hotel by 9.30am. They saw my Loew’s card and asked me what gift I wanted. I also asked for the bathrobes to be in my room. Unfortunately I had to phone and ask for them to be delivered.
Of course our room wasn’t ready but we got our all important room keys for FOTL access. I had got the entertainment rate for the garden view room so it only cost $117.50- well worth it for the perks.
We headed to IOA and did Cat in the Hat and One fish, two fish. The keys worked like magic and weren’t those in line jealous! Loved the new Poseidon’s Fury- it made much more sense now. I plucked up the courage to do Duelling Dragons and loved it. It was getting near lunch time so did Spiderman (walking past a 90min line). We had lunch at the Latin Quarter and then headed back to the hotel. Our room was ready and Brad- one of the brilliant bellman took our luggage down to our room. What an awesome room- all white with blue throw pillows on the beds. As for the beds- so comfortable. There was a CD player and we had been given a CD at check in. The toiletries were great- all with one word on them- the shampoo, rinse, the lotion, skin, the pencil, write etc. I was fully expecting the spare toilet roll to have something on the grey cover but it didn’t!
We got dressed for the pool but just when I got the towels a thunderstorm erupted. So we retreated to the Beach club bar- what hardship! The pool is amazing. Loads of loungers and a great pool slide which adults can go on. And yes you can hear the music under the water.
We were rather late leaving our room so we missed the turndown service- you just have to phone for it. They did give us 4 of the inaugural magnets though which are now on our fridge.
We headed back to IOA and I did the fire side of dragons- think I prefer the ice side. Also did the Seuss Landing rides again. We viewed the fireworks from the lagoon- they were good and the music really complimented them.
Next we went for a meal at the Hard Rock Café. I had applied for an All Access card on the internet and had been given $10 free credit and because it was my birthday month I was also given another $10. So this meal was free, despite having onion ring , burger and a sundae.

Wednesday 18th July
I was down at the pool at 8.30am. There are few elevators in the hotel and if like us you are in the far wings of the hotel it is easier to go out the fire exits to go the pool or the parks. Just remember to take your room key to get back in.
We headed to the water rides at IOA. You get totally soaked so we just planned to do those. Of course we did spiderman first. Then Dudley Do right and then the raft ride. Soaked we went to Jurassic Park and got even wetter. Ravishing after all our effort we went Blondies and had the Dagwood special. When we arrived back in our room the TV was on and the beanies mum had bought had the remote control.
The next logical move was the pool. A very relaxing few hours was spent here. We wanted to explore Portofino so we walked along the waterway. What a gorgeous hotel. We had a panino at Sal’s and explored the shops. Rather than walk back we took the water taxi to City walk and the water taxi to our hotel.
Earlier there had been a message on our phone telling me to pick up something at the front desk. It was an invitation to the Manager’s reception. What fun we had. There were only about 15 guests, lots of drinks and canapés. We had a long chat with Lou, the manager and Greg the guest services manager as well as the executive chef. We ended up staying there for about 3 hours. They were gauging peoples’ opinions- what a nice way to do it. When we arrived back at our room the room was decorated with the light up torches- my great niece loves them
I went back to Universal, in the rain and did Men in Black for the first time, then Jaws and Kong. The fireworks there were very good also.
I grabbed some cinnamon sticks and pastries from City Walk and headed back to the hotel.

Thursday 19th July
We had a late check out of 2pm, so I headed to the pool before we went to Universal. We both did MIB- I got the highest score! Then headed to IOA. After all the great recommendations we had to try Mythos. What a gorgeous restaurant. We had a salad, wood fired pizza and cheesecake for $20 including tip. We wouldn’t have been much less at a counter service restaurant and this was so much more relaxing. Our last ride was spiderman- bypassing a 90 min queue.
Back to the room to find our keys wouldn’t work- fortunately a security guard let us in- he did phone the front desk to check it was our room. Then unfortunately it was time to leave. No problem until we had to swipe the room key to leave the car park. Well it wouldn’t work and it seemed to take forever before somebody came to let us out. Meanwhile a queue was building up behind us!
Reached the airport by 3pm and arrived in LAX at 7pm. I had timed the flights so we could reach Anaheim in daylight. All was going well until mum went to pick up the car at Dollar. They were unhappy because we were using a prepaid voucher and rudely tried to get her to upgrade. They then left us waiting almost 45 mins before the car arrived. Of course by know it was getting late and we had to negotiate our way in the dark. We arrived in Anaheim without too many wrong turnings.
I had booked the Carousel Inn and Suites- the fourth time we have stayed there. It is much improved- the rooms have been redecorated, the elevators painted and the staff even friendlier. Most importantly we can be INSIDE either park 10 minutes after leaving our room.

Friday 20th July
Today was our first visit to Californian Adventures. We very impressed- I had read a lot of negative reviews but we both enjoyed the park.
We were on Soaring over California before 9am. It was great- I loved the way we were in the screen- we even got the smells of oranges and menthol. We headed to Screamin’ but it wasn’t working yet, so did the fixed cars of the Ferris Wheel. Great views of the rest of the park but still a bit stomach churning- I could not pluck up the courage to do the moving cars.
Neither of us would contemplate Mailboomer but we did the Jumping Jellyfish. I did Mulholland Madness- very jerky and then we both went to Golden dreams. What a wonderful moving show. I came out with tears in my eyes. By this time Screamin was working so I got fastpasses and we got a snack at Paradise Pier.
I loved this rollercoaster. I am not keen on going upside down but this one was so smooth and on my second ride the soundtrack was on and this made it even better. It was getting warm so we grabbed fastpasses for Grizzly Rapids (4hours later.) We wanted to investigate Grand California Hotel so we took the shortcut and entered the cool of the hotel. It was lovely and reminded me a lot of the Wilderness Lodge. We went then to Downtown Disney and used the DC coupon for Yriba, Yriba. It was great- lots of tapas to choose from. Even better instead of the 15% discount we got 20%. We wandered into Department 56 and got some great gifts. I headed back to the hotel and met mum back in the World of Disney store. It’s nice but not as good as the Orlando one.
It was time for Grizzly- by this time there was a 3hour wait- no ride is worth waiting that long. Of course we were on within 10 mins. It was a great ride but you get totally soaked. We walked around a bit to dry off and then headed to the Hollywood Backlots. We did the Muppets show and then Superstar Limo. It was ok but not worth the 20min wait. We then went to the Hyperion Theatre for the Steps in Time show- it was excellent. We were hungry again so went to Hollywood and Dine and got some Chinese. I made my DC card very visible but I had to ask twice for the discount.
Next stop was Soaring to pick up some fastpasses and then headed back to the hotel. After a brief nap we went back to the park, did Soaring and then watched the Electric parade,

Saturday 21st July
We had a long lie and then headed to Walmart. We love Walmart and always make a point of finding one when we are in the states. We then headed to the Block at Orange. The atmosphere is always great here with a good range of shops and restaurants. We hadn’t seen Shrek yet so we picked up tickets for that and then grabbed lunch at the Chinese. We both enjoyed the film- so funny. After a coffee and brownie at the Corner bakery we went back to the pool.
We love the Block at night so we went back and had meal at Left at Alberque. Of course the shops proved too tempting and we spent a fortune at Off Saks 5th Avenue.

Sunday 22nd July
We were at Disneyland by 8am. Did Indiana and picked up fastpasses, then Big Thunder. Pancakes at Riverbelle Terrace were good as usual and then we did Indianna again. We headed to Fantasyland and did Peter Pan and some of the other rides. I had booked brunch at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen so we exited Disneyland. Mum had a great burger and we split a salad. I loved the beef tenderloin I ordered though I could have done without the grits! The bread pudding was accompanied by some wonderful live jazz music.
I went back to DCA and did the rollercoaster again. We spent the evening watching the parade and the fireworks.

Monday 23rd July
Mum wasn’t feeling well today so I went to Disneyland solo. I headed to Splash, picking up a fastpass for Indiana on the way. Then did Haunted, Pirates, Big Thunder and then used my fast pass. I headed to Tomorrow land for French sticks and then went to Toontown- I love the rollercoaster there. I also did Roger Rabbit before going back to Space.
After checking on mum I went to DCA and did Golden Dreams again and of course the rollercoaster. I also went on the wine tour. Feeling peckish I wento the Soap Opera Bistro- what fun. I was in the nurses station of General Hospital and became one of the Dr’s wife. I had a great lunch- soup and salad. I met mum at the cinema and we enjoyed American Sweethearts.
To cool down I did Grizzly using the singles line.
I went back to DL and did Indiana and Space and then went back to DCA and did Soaring twice using the singles line.

Tuesday 24th July
I did early entry at DL but spent the time at the queue for Matterhorn- I wish they would install fastpass for this, far more necessary than it is for Haunted. I then did Splash and thunder and after using my fastpass for Indiana I went for a croissant and coffee at the Blue Ribbon Bakery. After meeting mum we went for lunch at the Soap opera Bistro. This time we were in the Country club from All My Children. Another fun lunch. We went to the Animation studios. I did the personality test in the Beast’s Library- I was Cinderella. I also did the Karaoke- I was awful.
We went back to DL to do Animazement. After a rest at the hotel we headed back to our last night at DL. We did Haunted, Pirates, Matterhorn, Fantasmic, Thunder, Casey Jr train and finally It’s a Small World. What a great day.

Wednesday 25th July
After breakfast from McDonalds we headed to Newport Beach. I tried priceline for the first time and ended up with the Newport Beach Marriott Suites for $60. They let us into our suite and we headed to South Coast Plaza. As if we didn’t have enough luggage we were going shopping!!
I got a suit for school and some great tops. We went back to the pool and then went for a lovely thai meal. It was sad to realise that our month’s vacation was almost over.

Thursday 26th July
After checking out we headed to Fashion Island. I just had to build-a-bear for my great niece. That was such fun- we even put in a heart and DNA. Lunch was at Wolfgang’s Puck and then unfortunately we had to collect our luggage. After a few wrong turns we arrived at LAX. Our flight back to Heathrow was uneventful. We knew we were back in the UK when we entered the terminal building and the air con was broken. Eventually we arrived back in Aberdeen.
A lovely surprise amongst all the bills and junk mail was a Mickey Mouse card from my e friend Barbara. I greatly appreciated the lovely thought.

This was a wonderful vacation and I am already planning the next one. I can’t let my colleagues down!

Wow, what a wonderful trip. Glad to hear the magic. I'm going to take a nap now reading your post has exausted me!!! LOL

What a wonderful trip! Sounds like you and your mom have a special relationship. :) Reading about the cruise makes me want to go again so bad!

Sounds like a great holiday Wendy. I loved Soarin over California. Unfortunately I didn`t get on the rollercoaster as it was down the day we were there.

Thanks for posting.

What a fantastic way to spend your summer break! My little sister's a teacher, so I know just how much you earned this vacation.;) Thanks so much for posting this--it was a pleasure to read.

What a great trip- I'm tired just reading about it!

Wow, how did you even remember all the stuff you did!?! Sounds like the vacation was a blast!

Thank you for all the kind comments. Screamin broke down when we were they too- when people were on it. In fact this seemed to be the week for break downs. At DL, Indy broke down just as the stone was rolling at us, Space broke down right at the end and Matterhorn also broke down. At DCA Grizzly was also broken a few times.
As for remembering all the details, thats a teacher for you!!
Wendy

Wow!! What a great vacation that must have been!! I am so glad you had a wonderful time!! I have yet to take a cruise and reading about it makes me want to go so much!! Thanks for posting! :)

How wonderful to be your mother's friend, as well as, her daughter. What a magical trip the two of you shared. You've seen many things in the US than I have, and I live here.

You're right, I'm very jealous of your incredible trip. Thanks for sharing it with us, I had a lot of fun reading about all of the things you got to see and do.

Wendylyn,

Sounds like you had a great time. I am pleased that you enjoyed yourselves during your brief visit to Washington, DC. We enjoy having visitors and are glad when they are happy.

If you ever get back to DC, let me know, and I will try to arrange for you to see some of the things that tourists rarely get to see.

cheers!

Bill

Katholyn- I am a compulsive planner and try to make the most of our time. There are loads of places in the UK I haven't been.
Bill- you never know I may take you up on that offer!

WoW! What a wonderful vacation! I hope you still had some down time to recuperate when you got home. I really enjoyed your reports. I was amazed at how much "grown up" stuff there was to do on the ship. Maybe someday....

WOW!!!! I'm tired just reading about everything you did!!! What a fun vacation!!!

thank you for taking all the time it must have taken to post this report!! Sounds like you had such a great time and I enjoyed reading about it.

Thanks for the trip report! How cool for you to be in our nation's capitol for the 4th!! It's amazing that you did all of this in one trip (makes sense though!) I love DCA, I've been going to Disneyland since I was a little girl, and DH & I love the Disney Cruise! You certainly did a lot at WDW with such a short time there.
