WDW Attractions for the ride phobic, staunchly (think Footloose) religious?

You seem like a great dad, and I understand the situation you are in with your wife's beliefs, but I would have a talk with her and tell her not to make your sons feel guilty if they want to have fun and ride some rides.

I hear ya.. Right now she and I are bickering as to whether I'm bullying them into going on the rides, or she's brow beating them into abstaining.. :)

I told her, we're deciding what rides we're all going on after we see them on U tube at home, no pressure, no shame, and that will be that (unless they see the ride in person and have second thoughts)..

I do not think Universal is a good idea, HP, aliens, terminator and lots of roller coasters. Maybe SeaWorld, nothing supernatural about that.

That's an option.. We'll see what the trial-by-U-tube foretells.. LOL

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that your wife hasn't been a JW a lengthy period of time??

You are doing great. You are attempting to honor her and not make her uncomfortable but still have a good time.

I am hoping you will be pleasantly surprised when you watch the you tube of some of these rides. I believe she has maybe gotten an idea about some of these things that the reality just won't live up to.

Now, if she can't handle even the slightest mention of "magic" I'm not sure how she will do. Or if she will not watch a single disney movie. But, if she can seperate make believe, fantasy type magic and more sorcery stuff then there will be plenty to do and only a handful of things to avoid.

Most importantly, don't put the kids in the middle. They wont have a good time and they will always feel torn. The impossibility of trying to please your parents when they don't agree can be very stressful.

I was a child of a JW and a "non-believer". So I know. I have been a JW for 22 years (I'm 37) just to let you know im not talking from a bitter perspective. I'm going on my 8th trip to WDW in 2 weeks, and I will do 99% of the attractions. I know many JW family's who go to WDW. I know some Baptists who won't let their kids watch Disney movies at all. I know an athiest who sees the princesses as detrimental role models to young girls. So, I'm not sure the exact religion is the crux of this situation. But, maybe more where your wife is in her personal spiritual journey.

Hopefully your wife will come around and see the happy place WDW can be. A moment to bring family's together. Either way, just make sure those kids are all smiles. That is what it is all about!!

You are a very patient and loving husband! DH was raised as a JW, he was in when we got married, but admittedly he was the worst JW of all time and did whatever he wanted to do, including marrying a heathen atheist ! His family are devoted JWs though so now he's disfellowshipped which sucks for him :sad2:

Anyway, a few suggestions I feel that she may not like are Great Movie Ride (Alien alien and wicked witch of the west), Wintersummerland (Christmas theme), and Hall of Presidents (political involvement). I bet your boys would love the Sorcerers game but it is totally about casting spells to defeat villains.

Hope you guys have a good trip, sounds like you are a compromising guy!

About 11 years (we've been married for 16).. The escalation in religiousness (if that's a thing) and community involvement (knocking on doors, etc) has been slow (as she was wary of setting me off, initially), but steady..

I am hoping you will be pleasantly surprised when you watch the you tube of some of these rides. I believe she has maybe gotten an idea about some of these things that the reality just won't live up to.

I'M not going to be, as I don't want the twists, etc ruined for me.. But as long as they're just quick snippets..

I don't think she has any pre-conceived notions, but we'll see..

Or if she will not watch a single disney movie

Aladin - so-so, Hercules - so-so

Mulan, Bambi, Rescuers, Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, Peter Pan, Wall-E, Monsters, Up, Cinderella, Finding Nemo - good..

Little Mermaid, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Brave - no

So, I'm not sure the exact religion is the crux of this situation. But, maybe more where your wife is in her personal spiritual journey.

I agree.. Lots of hypocrisy (apparently facebook is a spiritual no-no for JW's, but there's tons of them on it), varying degrees of devotion, personal biases, peer pressure..

Hopefully your wife will come around and see the happy place WDW can be

She's being cautiously optimistic, so there's that..

just make sure those kids are all smiles

That's the priority for both of us.. She doesn't want them to get nightmares, slip down any slippery moral slopes, wants to make the 'right' choices for them.. I don't want them to be tied to apron strings, and I want them to make their own choices, good or bad..

Hope you guys have a good trip, sounds like you are a compromising guy!

Not really.. But I try!

hall of Presidents (political involvement). I bet your boys would love the Sorcerers game but it is totally about casting spells to defeat villains.

We'll all probably skip both.. We're Canadians, by gum! LOL

And the Sorcerer's game will be a bone I can throw in the name of compromise.. :)

This isn't really Disney related. But are your sons allowed to watch movie tv, and play video games? I was just thinking that if they get bored in line they could pop out a 3DS or a ipod touch and have a little distraction

Wife approved ones, yes..

But no, they have their noses in that stuff too much as it is.. If they get bored in line at bleedin' Disney World! I'll be less than sympathetic.. But I might bring a book, myself.. LOL

Facebook is not a no-no. There are many things that are personal decisions, not black and white. But, from your perspective "her" personal decisions are defining 8 million people. Does that make sense? I don't want to get too religious here, it isn't the place. The reason I asked if she hadn't been a JW long is because sometimes it takes time for people to find their balance. But, 11 years is a long time. Lol!

Is there hypocrisy? Sure. There is everywhere. We are all human no matter what we believe or don't believe.

Ok, the movies helped a lot with kind of seeing her "line." There is a lot she will be able to do. If she'll watch Peter Pan, then the parades and fireworks at MK, EP, AK, and Pixar parade wont be issue. She should just avoid Fantasmic at DHS. AK, has lion king show and nemo both great, bird show - wonderful. Safaris awesome. Tough to be bug, good. EP - try to convince her to do Soarin, I hate rollar coasters and soarin is awesome!! Living land, I like spaceship earth, world showcase is great. DHS - toy story mania, draw with animator (huge for us my 12 yo loves it) backlots tour, Indiana Jones, American idol, stunt show, muppets, beauty and the beast musical. Magic Kingdom - lots of characters to see, plus buzz light year ride, monsters laugh floor, stitch, astro Orbiter, Dumbo, goofys barnstormers, Peter pan flight, Winnie Pooh, Mickey's philharmagic, tales with belle, I see hall of presidents, my kids are homeschooled and that makes the trip educational. Jungle cruise, Swiss family treehouse.

This is off the top of my head, I'm sure there is more. You probably can't even finish all that. Lol! Go and have a great time. Try to find what connects you rather than divides.

Don't take this the wrong way but tell your kids from me. 7 and 9 more years until they can move out!

Does that make sense?

It does, if you mean I'm defining 8 million people by her example..

The facebook, and not to get into it more than we have - it IS a personal choice, but it's also frowned upon, if you want to be strict about it (and she does!)... JW's are supposed to avoid socializing with non JW's, so she takes this quite to heart..

'Touch not the unclean thing! Come out from among them and be Ye separate'.. LOL

(one of my favourite Bible quotes.. Man, I love the lyrical King James bible.. The JW one takes all the poetry out of it). I'm an agnostic, but I like a good quote.. :)

She should just avoid Fantasmic at DHS

Got it, thanks..

I get her "no" list, witches but witch put a spell on Beast and Cinderella used help of good witch. I am not sure I understand why those OK.

I honestly didn't read all of the posts, so I hope I don't repeat too much. I won't really address specific rides or even the religious aspect. Please remind her there are many things at WDW than just the rides. When I was in a wheel chair after a wreck on our way to Orlando, I learned to really enjoy the other slower things at WDW. I love the countries at Epcot anyway, but really took the time to go through all the stores, all the attractions if I could (10 broken ribs and a broken neck prevented some of them). When are you going? Besides the countries, I loved the landscaping. I went to most of the shows. Depending on the time of year, there are so many things to do-enjoy F&G, Christmas decor, resort touring, one thing she might like is buying a hidden mickey book and playing the game to see how many she can find.

Interesting thread.....

Not much else I can add, but as one who definitely has a thing about heights, Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse might not be a good attraction for her. I enjoy it but cannot wait to get down off that tree!

.

Hope that is not the case because if you are relying on Magical Express for transportation, you are in for a lenghty walk!

Joke aside, you'll find lots of ways to.share in family.

Not getting into the religious discussions, and you've gotten a lot of good ride/attraction suggestions, but just wanted to mention that since you're on the quick service dining plan, there are LOTS of great options -- Sunshine Seasons at Epcot is great -- a food court with LOTS of choices. At MK, there's a place in Liberty Square that has fried shrimp and lobster rolls. At Hollywood Studios, toward Rock n Roller Coaster, there's a big outdoor food court that's really good. We usually do only one or maybe two sit-down meals, and find that we can avoid the burgers and chicken almost completely if we choose to.

I think all the ride suggestions have been made, I just want to add that Downtown Disney would probably be a good way to spend a day if you find that the parks don't work as well as you're hoping. So many differentcvvr.'T c shops, surely something to please everyone! Also want to add that I sincerely hope you and your family have a fantastic trip:yay:

I agree with Allyphoe ;)

And dude, if he was whipped, he'd be a JW too. And damn, that ride ain't even NEAR Disney WORLD!

Indiana Jones isn't in Hollywood Studios anymore??

(I also think the trolls are alive and well here)
