WDW Attendance

Unless I'm blind, I haven't seen anything on this board about the attendance at WDW since the tragic terrorist attack of Sept. 11. Has anyone been there in the last few days and if so what is it like? With the shutdown, no planes and now many people reluctant to fly what has it been like there recently?

Pretty empty, and there are rumors of schedule changes to address this (shorter hours less parades and fireworks)

They said that the park was 3/25 full today. Better then it has been. Splash Mountain actually had a long line for once.

There were lines to get on the monorail at the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World and half-hour waits to ride the Space Mountain coaster.

After seeing attendance plunge following the attacks in New York and Washington, the turnout Saturday at the MK offered a glimmer of hope for Florida's tourism industry.

Tourist spending has dropped by about $20 million a day, or more than a third, since the attacks, economic consultant Stan Geberer estimates. Hotels and attractions are cutting back worker hours and have laid off some workers.

Workers and guests estimated that the Magic Kingdom was about three-fourths full Saturday, a vast improvement over the quarter-full attendance the park experienced earlier last week.

``Everywhere has been dead all week,'' said Catherine Carlton, a British tourist who sat outside the Space Mountain ride.

Orlando's other major parks weren't faring as well.

Universal's Islands of Adventure park and SeaWorld Orlando was only about half full, according to guests and workers.

Gov. Jeb Bush, meantime, had a day of meetings with tourism industry leaders in Miami.

``We need to respond quickly so people regain confidence and consider it their patriotic duty to go shopping, go to a restaurant, take a cruise, travel with their family,'' Bush said afterward. ``Frankly, the terrorists win if Americans don't go back to normalcy.''

Bush flew on a commercial plane from Tallahassee to Miami Saturday to demonstrate his support and confidence in the airlines.

``The first step in any economic recovery for our state is to make sure people understand how safe it is to fly and how convenient it is,'' Bush said.

As fears subside, the governor said the economy would improve.

Workers and tourists at all the theme parks said attendance was the best it has been since the attacks, which raised concerns about airline safety and kept droves of visitors from flying.

This weekend was considered an important test of what to expect for the rest of the year for Florida's attractions and theme parks, economic engines of the state's $50.7 billion tourism industry. It was the first weekend since the attack that airlines were running regular schedules.

``In September, weekend business is the real gauge of how business is doing,'' said Donna Ross, president of the Florida Attractions Association.

Many visitors decided to drive to Orlando instead of fly.

Mike and Ethel Stansbury canceled their airline tickets and rented a car to make the 12-hour trek from New Orleans to the Magic Kingdom.

``For the short-term, we're not flying,'' said Ethel Stansbury as she sat outside an ice cream shop along the park's Main Street U.S.A. ``But you can't let the terrorists bother you. You've got to go on with your life.''

As we get farther away from the incident more people are coming our way...Last Sunday the All Star Resorts were at 6% capacity...now they are at 80%...These hour cuts for employees won't last 2 weeks if things keep going this way,,,

On Thursday, the actual (believe it or not) gate count at EPCOT was just over 400 folks, from 9am till 8pm (pre Illuminations of course). As for the 80% All-Star capacity that Swingerville-Mike reports, well MAYBEE that is the case on the weekends, when alot of FL resisdents come to WDW...but I know for a fact that the cabins are at around 27% (WAY off from the normal 80% for this time of year)!!!

I really believe it is hard to judge what will happen in the first 2 weeks following the tragic events. I myself would not have gone to WDW if I had plans for last week. I say give it a few more weeks to see how things are going.

This past Thursday? I was there and I can tell you there were alot more than 400...Maybe the Thursday after Sept 11th....but not the 20th....

I tend to believe what my manager tells me...Oh thanks for getting my name right

I was fearing that a big turn out wasn't going to happen for the 100 Years of Magic Celebration but I guess you have to have faith. Tell Disney that before they decide to fire more people.

Rumors were coming from Disney that they were going to fire more workers at WDW if attendance didn't improve but they may not have to do that.

Repeating what Disneydork said....No one has been fired...period...

Fired...no.

Laid off (however you word the company telling people not to come to work)...yes

The industry as a whole is going to be hurtin....we'll see what happens.

swinginevilmike and disneydork,

Disney let go off 3% of their employees earlier this year.

HBK--No one has been fired or laid off as you will read in the article. Our hours were reduced significantly and some people were told not to report to work until further notice but they were not laid off, not fired, they are still CMs and keep their I.D. they just might not get scheduled for a few weeks.

Ok, noone was fired, noone was laid off. Employees were just told not to report to work.

It's all semantics. People are not working. Period. Even if only temporary, they're not working.

Semantics are pretty important when it comes to your job...CM hours are adjusted week to week anyway...so people getting scheduled no hours is nothing new...It just has media attention this time...

Just arived home and I can say the attendance in the parks was low.

Thursday we where in Studios and i thought there was very low attendance, we where able to walk on any ride that was open no wait time for any of the rides, even fantasmic we where able to get a seat at 10 minutes before show time.

Friday we went to Mk in the morning did every ride by 1:00pm we even got a PS for Cindy's, it was kind of sad knowing why no one was in the parks(even the Orlando paper ran an atricle about the low attendance at WDW showing Studios on the front cover). Went to Studios in the evening (MK closed at 7 instead of 9 due to cut backs) not alot of people, Fantasmic was rained out, ride times where short, we got to see the hat because it was a Cast Member party that night. I did notice it was hard to find consession stands open in all the parks they swhere working on limited hours.

Saturday was a normal day lots of people lots of lines 20 to 40 minutes in most cases plenty of people due to the fireworks, EE, new parade (which is great!!!), It was in a way a normal day at MK. AK was crowded due to all the pin traders there was four new pins debuting. I overheard some CM's (management) comenting how pleased they where that they had a crowd.

Sundaywent to Epcot and crowds where light a very enjoyable day with MK in the afternoon.

ALL in all it was a very nice trip in WDW. I think the CM's out did themselves, they went above and beyond ther normal friendly way. The CM's at AKL where among the nicest people at any resort we ever stayed at and the park employes where outsatnding. Teriffic job by all

Sunday was a little light
