WDW and VMK: My experience

Since so many members of the DIS are heading to WDW in the coming months, I thought it might be mildly helpful to share my experience from last week. Obviously, these are just my experiences.

First of all, regarding the "gift with purchase" prize cards, I found that all of the places that were supposed to have the cards actually did. (Chapeau Shop, Sir Mickey's, Frontierland Trading Post - pin station - Frontierland candy store, Splash Mountain photo desk). Also, the cast members were, for the most part, very friendly and happy to give out the cards.

However, I found that I always had to ask for the cards. They were never given automatically. In only one case - the hat shop - did I have to try to explain what the heck VMK was. There, I wound up pointing to the large VMK sign behind the clerk and then she realized what I was asking for and handed me the card (which was on the register right in front of her). For the record, in the pin shop, I received on card per item, but in the candy shop I only got one per purchase.

Oddly, the place where I found the greatest hassle with VMK was in VMK Central. I found that some of the CM's there were well aware of the game, and how to redeem codes and quests. Others seemed totally clueless about the game. At the start of my day I went to redeem prizes earned in the game and waited for a long time for a clerk to finish selling a Pal Mickey (which she seemed to know a lot about and did a great job of explaining) but when I handed her my VMK sheets she had no idea what to do with them and I had to wait again for a different clerk.

When I went to start my quests, I saw one of the clerks at VMK Central (Jacques) doing a great job of redeeming other people's quests, gathering their cards and carefully explaining what prizes they were receiving and even asking guests about their thoughts and impressions of the game.

When I went back later to redeem mine, a different clerk scanned them, grabbed a handful of cards and shoved them across the counter at me saying nothing but "Here." Thankfully, I looked over the stack of prizes carefully and compared them to the display of available prizes and realized I had not received any of the Tomorrowland Quest prizes. (They were very good about giving them to me after I showed them the mistake). Moral: Look over the quest prize cards carefully.

Overall, I have to say my VMK WDW experience was positive. For those who have the time and interest, I truly recommend doing the quests and not simply grabbing the answers off line. The quests encourage you to really look at the park in some new ways and seek out details that you may never have noticed otherwise. For me, that was a REAL highlight.

Also, the CMs were friendly and very hospitable to VMK players. (As a former pin trader, I have to say that was a pleasant change of pace.) The CMs seem to really enjoy helping people find the answers to the Quests. If they see you wandering around their area with a quest card, they are almost TOO eager to help you out! LOL. I was talking with others on my tour fand we all noted that we had to sometimes stop CM's from telling us the answer, and ask them to please just point us to the right building or attraction. LOL

To all of our friends heading to WDW - have a great time. And for those who have been - feel free to add your thoughts.

Just curious, was Jacques an older, tall, thin man with a French accent?

I agree with having to ask for the cards... When I was in DL on the 50th, the only shop I saw there advertising VMK was star traders. (For the pin I think.) I asked what it was about and had actually bought a few pins there, but never was a single card given to me.

I got gold mickey ears when I bought them somewhere in Critter Country though and the very kind CM there offered me the cards without me even knowing what they were for. (I had no idea about VMK at that time. SO sad.)

Definite words to the wise. If you are going to DL or WDW, be sure to bring a list of the shops that give away the VMK cards.

Thanks much for telling us your experience!

I totally agree, the questions and answers I have provided are there so you may check your answers before turning them in.

Sounds like you had overall a great VMK expierence. Thanks for posting.

Nope. Short and young. But he was thin! :rotfl2:

We had Jacques too!!! He was so knowledgable. It was shame we were talking with him about the game and the quests when management came over and asked him to go help another store out. We finished our conversation, but he you could tell he was disappointed having to go to another store, when he was having fun at VMK Central. Obviously, when you have someone who is skilled on something like VMK when it so new, you do not move that person out of there.

He is a great guy.

When we were making purchases at the Frontierland candy store, we asked in advance if we'd get a card for each item, or for each purchase. We added "Because we'll ring them up separately if the policy is 'one card per purchase'". lol At that point, the CM said "I'll ring them up together and then give you one card per item". :) So, if you want or need a card per item, ask in advance how the CM wants to handle it. I'm sure they'd rather just ring up one transaction, than to ring up several. The cards are just sitting there; they don't need to do anything special as far as scanning them or anything, before they hand them to you. A few CMs actually gave us extra cards :) We found all of the CMs to be very nice regarding VMK; helping with the quests (directing us where to find the answers), and in handing out the cards. :)

Our Tour got rained out (our tour guide completed the tour in VMK Central by asking us questions and handing out some cards, after we had gotten soaked to the bone while on the Junge Cruise. LOL), so we're looking forward to doing the complete tour at the end of the month :sunny:

P.S. We had DSs with us, and they had created characters for themselves at VMK Central and wanted the cards/prizes, for their own characters. As it turns out, neither of the boys have really gotten interested in VMK so CapeCAD and I have basically given away all of the extra prizes. :)

Thanks, Simba, for sharing your experience! It is much appreciated, especially for us poor unfortunate souls who have yet to go! :(

And I wholeheartedly agree that actually attempting to do the quests yourself, with the answers only as a safety net, is the best way to go about it.

Yavn himself posted over on the other boards that he was sad that so many people decide to just get the answers and turn them in without participating in the hunt at all.

He said basically that they have put a lot of thought and hard work into designing these quests for us, trying to make them as fun and interesting as possible -- which it sounds like they have succeeded in doing, according to your report!

Anyway, glad you had a great time, and happy you are back! :cool1:

I agree with Dewberry about having fun on the quests. The quests and the whole scavenger hunt idea is how I found out about vmk in the first place - I was at Disneyland, saw the quest brochures and decided it would be fun to do the quests. My wife and I had such a great time that we checked out vmk afterwards.

Thank you for such a great review. My DH, DD, DS and I will be going to WDW at Christmas adn look forward to doing at least some of the quests. It really depends on how much the kids like doing it. Of course my DD is very different than my DS (and likes different things)so I have a feeling we will only do 1! LOL

It sounds like your overall experience was a good one, so that's very encouraging. I hope that it stays that way as the holidays approach. Do you go the WDW often?

Nope. Short and young. But he was thin!

I was wondering b/c I took the Keys to the Kingdom tour with a Jacques. He was really cool :cool1:

I'm getting ready to go down next week for the MNSSHP on 10/11. What times are the tours offered? Is it only very early in the morning or is it possible to pick one up in the afternoon (say around 4-5 when I can go in for MNSSHP)?

There was a late afternoon tour when I was there in August(WDW). I think it was either at 4 or 4:30. (I took the early tour)
