WDW after hysterectomy?

How soon after a hysterectomy could I plan on going to WDW? Not a "do alot of things" trip, more a recovery, lie around the pool kinda trip? This would be a solo trip, by the way. I'm having a hysterectomy next week, and already dreaming of heading to WDW, lying around the pool with a good book, and resting. I already have a trip planned for mid-October. Do you think I should just wait for that, or do you think I might be able to squeeze another short trip in?

Do you really want to risk blood clots from flying and be hundreds of miles from your doctor should something happen? I wouldn't want to be in that spot. I wouldn't travel until at least August, and if I had a trip planned in October, then it would be silly to go in August to me since Oct is so soon.

Traveling alone could be tricky too since you shouldn't lift your luggage, etc.

DW had a hysterectomy in April. She was back to work part time in two weeks. Full time in 4. The real issue for her was the fatigue. That lasted for a couple of months. She had the surgery with the Da Vinci robot, which is suppose to make the recovery quicker. A solo trip though - especially if it was a more invasive surgery - probably not a great plan.

I don't think the hot sun and laying by the pool will be all that great. I went 7 weeks after mine, and I was feeling fine. But I avoided the hot tubs, one nurse even told me to avoid the pools.
My recovery was 4 days in the hospital, a week at home, and I had to go back to work, because I didn't have short term disability or sick days. Luckily I could do most of my work on the computer at home though.
I'd wait till October and rest at home. Your days will go faster than you think.

I tried to post last night, but it timed out on me.

My advice would be: no.

For some people, the pain after a hysterectomy is more intense than they expected (even if they have the "belly button" surgery).

For some people, the pain is less intense than they expected, but lasts for a longer period of time than expected.

For some people, being in a sitting position is uncomfortable.

I love the thought of relaxing by a WDW pool, but it takes an awful lot of effort to get from here to there. The drive to the airport, the waiting in line to get through airport security, sitting around the airport until the plane takes off, sitting through the flight, getting from the gate to ground transportation, getting from the airport to the resort... and dragging your bags with you the whole time... I'm exhausted just thinking about it! I would not suggest trying to do it while you are recovering.

I think there's a big difference between "resting" and "recovering."

Stay home -- and sign up for Netflix. It will be nice to have those movies to look forward to.

Thanks everyone. Wow, wait til I tell DH that this site recommended me NOT to go to WDW. He was saying "Oh sure, ask THEM. You know what they'll say." Actually your comments brought up some issues I hadn't considered. Also, something happened yesterday that I hadn't considered. My insurance company is being a pain-they haven't given approval until we send them more info (or I say, jump thru more hoops). Since my surgery might be delayed, I think I'll remember what OhMari said "the days will go faster than you think" and stick with my original plan.

I had mine done on 9/3 and we went to Disney on 9/29. My surgery was through my c-section scar and don't get me wrong, the first couple of weeks weren't pleasant. But I was TOTALLY fine. I went on everything I was allowed to go on and the Dr said pools were fine.

It was the best trip EVER, just didn't get to go on things like SM, TOT, etc.

How about finding a nice hotel close to home where you can relax. I'd be nervous about doing a Solo trip right after a major surgery. You will probably be fine but there are so many "what if's" involved, especially if you are flying. If you want to just sit by the pool and relax with a book, I'd look for a quiet hotel or B&B closer to home. Good luck with your surgery and recovery!

On our first trip in 1998 my wife had her hysterectomy The first of September and we were at WDW for Thanksgiving. She experienced no problems at all and we had a wonderful time for the 9 days that we were there. She was in he early 30s at the time and in reasonably good health so I'm sure that helped.

However, just 6 weeks before the trip she was still getting tired fairly easily and was clearly still healing. So you should be in great shape for your Mid-October trip but would probably want to wait until then to go.

I could EASILY have gone to WDW after mine and regret not doing it.
I had the laproscopic surgery. I never even took so much as an aspirin post 24 hours after surgery.
I stayed out for 4 weeks but my Dr said she forgot I had the surgery laproscipally and could have gone back in 2 weeks.

OK you guys are scaring me. I have my surgery Oct 20, (v-style) and my cruise is scheduled for Dec 5th. We plan on doing sight seeing at the 1st two ports and then the beach at castaway cay, nothing like hiking, biking or snorkeling. Will I be OK? I didn't book the insurance.

You should be fine, maybe tired. You can always sit on the deck instead of sightsee OR come back from port early. I was a travel agent for 28 years. I alway book the insurance because I saw lots of people lose lots of money not having it. You might still be able to get insurance from an independent company.

She could get insurance but the ones that cover pre-existing conditions at this are VERY expensive.
Usually if you get ins w/in a few days after booking it covers pre-existing conditions.

You may experience fatigue as shortbun said. DOn't push yourself. As soon as your doc oks it, start with short walks and increase the amount of time you walk in small increments. That will help you build some stamina.

OP, I would not go. Besides the clots, people have very different recovery times. The recovery is not as easy as a c-section. My hysto knocked me for a loop. I had no idea. Don't forget too that hot flashes will be your new best friend for awhile so laying out by a pool might not be too appealing. Not to mention getting your hormones leveled.

I had the traditional type of Hyster and was off work for 6 weeks. Ten weeks later we took a trip to Myrtle Beach, SC which we had planned before the emergency surgery. Doctor would not give me permission to go in pool water or any type of swimming for 8 weeks due to the threat of infection.

Even though you are probably having an easier surgery I do not think it is a great idea to be that far away from your own doctor and hospital...just in case theory.

I think it depends on what kind of hysterectomy you have. My ovaries were left intack and I will not go into menopause any earlier than if I have not had hysterectomy.

Unfortunately, I'll be having the "traditional" type of hysterectomy. Guess I'll be waiting til October. Hopefully by then I can REALLY enjoy myself!

I had a complete hysterectomy (cut hip bone to hip bone) & was okay after 2 weeks. Much depends on your pain tolerance. I think the biggest problem would be having to lift anything especially if you are alone.

Not sure how much time is between your surgery & trip~
