I'm lucky that Molly (11) doesn't want to wear short skirts and won't even wear a tank top in public. She is just shy. Nice not to worry. I've seen lots of too short shorts this summer...![]()

There are some awful shorts around this year.

Hmmm ... I don't know quite how to broker this topic, but as I am not a parent it has been something I have thought about from time to time, usually when I am in WDW.
When I was a kid, children were dressed like children and not miniature adults.
Something that has sort of bothered me is the trend towards dressing children (especially little girls) like miniature adults. There is something that seems a bit to me like the sexualization of children, what with the heels and make-up and such I've seen. This would be on what I would judge as little girls of 8, 9, 10, 11 etc.
I find this all a bit disturbing, because it just somehow, to me seems wrong.
I'm not saying that I see it ALL the time, but have seen it enough that Sukie and I have discussed it.
Again, I apologize if I offend anyone. Not having children ourselves, or knowing anyone (in Chicago) with children, there's not really anyone I can ask.
In some ways we live a very sheltered existence in our own little world.
It is probable that I am out of touch with what goes on today.
Hey I found out my cousin's daughter had her baby, 6 days lateLittle girl 7lbs2oz born on 8-8-08, kinda cool huh

This is me trying to be photo artsy when we had the beautiful ocean setting behind us in San Simeon.

I could so easily never come home from the beach...I wish it were an option.
Nope you aren't out of touch, you are just voicing the opinion of the other side of the world, those of us that agree that kids should be kids as long as they can. I also find the trend disturbing. I'm so glad that my kiddos are happy being that and not trying to act or look older. That day will come soon enough.![]()

This proves you don't have to be a parent to have a good sense of right and wrong when it comes to kids. It is an issue that several excellent psychologists, authors, sociologist etc. have been writing and speaking about because it is all part of the question about how far and hard do we push our kids to grow up too fast in comparison to their brain and physical development. Developmental wardrobe is a big topic in our field because it is the beginning of how kids become leaders vs. followers. It's not the same as being fashionable or trendy, it's more about safety. The followers are the ones we worry about because they will follow any kid to the back of the school to smoke a cigarette. Good eye, Ian and Sukie.![]()
When my SIL was here a few years ago she told me that in her area of NC the kids were already (at 5 yrs) telling the other kids that Disney characters and princesses were for babies and they didn't believe in them. It was sad.

I just saw on the news that Mickie Mouse was arrested in Anaheim today. Now that's a bad day.
Hi All. I FINALLY got caught up reading. I was 100 pages behind and by the time I caught up to that I was another 50 pages behind. I can't skip pages. I have to read it all and get caught up to get back to posting with you all again.
I've also been watching the Olympics and BB After Dark......takes up a lot of TV time.....but I love both so I do it.
Happy Belated Birthday Ian and Happy Birthday to come Shelly.

That's a really great idea Kelly!Holly (and all the other parents out there interested), You may want to do what we're doing with Zoe. We put up 6 laminated maps: a map of the world and 5 continents, everytime we watch an event or someone wins or a country we recognize from the DCL trips we mark a letter on the country. Zoe finds the country and marks it with a special pen. Like A for Archery, C for Calvin our room host. It's really helping her memorize the continents, flags, languages and countries. And of course, if there is a disney character involved we have to mark that too. Mulan has been coming up a lot this week. She' better at geography than most of my 5th graders in my class at this point. You don't have to watch the Olympics to do it, just talk about the athletes goals and that they got there and got a medal. Jonathan and I have discovered quite a few countries that we've never heard of... and I teach a geography class!
