I get why you would need a box with an old analog tv. But we have had an HD digital capable tv for years, and I don't think if we unhook the cable that we will get much. I'm pretty sure digital has to come through a cable, but not sure. IAN, CAN YOU SPLAIN IT TO US?

The information in the signal itself coming over the air is now digital, as opposed to the old analogue signal.

An older TV knows how to read and translate the analogue into a picture and sound but does not know how to translate the digital information.

The newer TVs are capable of translating that digital information. The converter boxes they are selling for older TVs do the same thing, they take the digital information, and turn it into analogue information that is under stood by the older sets.

Newer TVs have the ability to "understand" the digital information built in.

Cable and Satellite do not need this, because the delivery mechanism is not broadcast through the air, but via a physical cable or via a satellite.

The whole reason for digital broadcasting is that it opens up airspace. Digital takes up less space than analogue.

Another very good way to under stand analogue and digital are records and CDs.

Vinyl records are analogue. They have physical sound waves (grooves) that cause a needle to vibrate, and then that physical energy is converted into sound.

CDs are digital (which is a series of zeros and ones), or data that are read by a beam of light and translated into sound.

Here's another analogy. They are now selling turntables for vinyl that have USB connections to allow you to convert records to MP3 and digital format.

Those turntables (like the new TVs) have a built in converter that takes the information in the physical sound waves (grooves) and converts it into a digital format (zeros and ones) so that it can be used by a computer, which only understands digital information.

Digital is more compact than analogue, so just like a CD can old more music than a vinyl record, digital television broadcasting also takes up less physical space, so going digital opens up air bandwidth and airspace.

And because I know you're all wondering...

The human ear is an analogue receiver. The human brain is not analogue, it's bio-electrical.

(Unless some of you don't have brains and instead have gears like an old adding machine, in which case your particular brain is analogue.)

Greetings all...

I figured I'd check in before I go and drug myself up enough to sleep or cry... which ever comees first...

It drives me nuts when family visits...

I didn't go the caverns with them because I didn't get to sleep until 9 am...

I finally took 1/2 a clonaprin and put myself into an artificial la la land...(that was after 2 rounds of garbage trucks roared through the neighborhood at 6 am and 6:23 resectfully ( you can tell I was watching the clock...)

They all left to go to the caverns leaving Reilly - the family pooch with a newly diagnosed thyroid problem home with me...

I do believe he has taken the correspondence courses that Talluah and Truman offer online about how to get back at those who leave you behind...

The dog took a dump TWICE outside of MY bedroom. Once after THEY left... and another time after we ALL went out for dinner... (Why MY room... I have no idea...)

Then I got stuck watching "Flower Drum Song" on TCM... and I've always liked this movie, but apparently the drastically editied to fit your screen version I've always watched on TV was NOT the one I watched tonight (what WAS with all those interpertive dances???)

Then they ALL wanted to sleep downstairs because they didn't want to put anyone out... all fine and dandy but they got into a "discussion" as to why I should put the aero beds up for them since my brother was already taking a power nap on the floor... (I ignored them and put the beds up while they were "discussing" it... )

Then I had to pack up my "snacks" (things I usually keep on hand just in case I have to take something in the middle of the night and don't want to take it on an empty stomach...) and everyone wondered why I looked like I was packing enough for an Arctic expedition... (really it was 2 cups of ice, a pretzel and some juice...)

Then I came upstairs and started to look online for some sales for a short coat becuause I don't have one... I asked mom to take a look at something that Lands End has on sale because my sister sent me a gift card and they have free shipping and mom and I got into a heated "discussion" over a jacket that is hanging in the closet downstairs that I have ALWAYS hated and will not be seen out in public wearing... BUT I needed to try it on to get the sizing (code words for... you should wear this one... even though you hate it...)

& I got the usual "You need to clean the garage out" talk...(I don't have a basement and you know... the lawn mower has to go somewhere...) (and I'm under no circumstances going to sit in a garage and clean until the temps outside reach at least ABOVE FREEZING...)

My computer is on life support... everyonce in a while it comes to life, but it's been downloading a security update for at least 5 hours now...

& I just want to scream!!!!!

(but it would give me a headache...)

So that's where I am...

I will be back tomorrow...

Note to self... I'm back on page 82...
.
SO SORRY !!

My family at the Disneyland Hotel, summer 1970 (don't know where my other sister is...)

Great snapshots. Maybe I should rummage through our family photos.

However, by time my parents got to me, they ran out of steam.

There are only about 5 photos of me.

I didn't really exist before I was 18.

Love the pictures, Bubba and Cheri! :goodvibes

Michelle, sorry about your rough time. Sounds awful.

Deborah, let us know how the kids like Pink Panther. Tyler wants to see it, but I haven't heard anything about it.

OK, I have to share something funny. You know how I keep saying I've been sleeping so much on weekends, well we ran into somebody from church when we went out for Valentine's Day dinner, she asked where we've been, and Tyler jumped right in and said, "My mom's been sleeping through her alarm every week!" :rotfl2: Well, it gets funnier....the song "Arise" has been playing in my head almost non-stop for a few days. I think somebody's trying to give me a hint about getting my lazy butt out of bed, to "arise" and get my booty to church! :lmao:

Going back to the TV discussion, do the new TVs have a built-in antenna to receive the over-the-air signal?

I don't know. I would think that they all have a plug to accept regular antenna, but I would think that few newer units come with "rabbit ears."

same with me too,, I feel guilty now as I put on the weight too, wonder if I take lots of exercise when spring come... or go to ww classs?? I am thinking...
I blame the weather lol

Your mother is beautiful woman, always smile...

Michelle

Hope you feel better...

Kids are here and they want me take them out to the picture to see Pink Pathers2....

Scottishwee35

how funny we saw Pink Pathers2 yesterday too. It was good, I liked the first one better.

hi everyone.

Molly and I are home alone today.

Paul is at work

Wilson went to the track with a friend and his dad. I'm a little nervous for him, since he is there without dad (or mom) I'm sure he is safe. Just us mom's like to worry.

Not sure what to do today. It's the first sunny day in 4 days. We have had lots of rain. greatly needed it too. There is talk of a drought in CA :sad2:
