Ways 'Ohana has cut corners on dinner

We first went to 'Ohana for dinner in early 2012. Most recenty, we went about a month ago.

Areas we've noticed that they cut corners:

-No butter served with the bread (and no offer for seconds)

-Not as many pot stickers and chicken wings brought to the table (and no offer for seconds)

-Not as many vegetables brought with the noodles, and the ones that were brought didn't seem as fresh as in the past (wife noticed this, I don't go here for veggies)

-No pork skewers

The other thing we noticed this time was that our server seemed to have a ton of tables and would frequently disappear for long periods. Thus, it was very hard to ask for seconds on anything.

The other skewer items (chicken, steak, and shrimp) seem about the same and, thankfully, the bread pudding doesn't seem to have changed over the years.

Anyone notice any other changes? (FWIW, we still really like 'Ohana, just disappointed that they seem to progressively cut corners).

Did you ask for seconds or was it that they just didn't offer?

I've only been for dinner twice and neither was post the cuts. I will say I think for family style meals it does make sense to offer less at first and have people ask for more. There were some things that sat untouched on our table that they lost money on. However, whenever we asked for more it was never denied to us.

We went in August and they came to our table with skewers of meat multiple times... seconds, thirds. We were over stuffed lol! I didn't really noticed the other things mentioned either but I was also dealing with keeping a 4 and 1 year old happy so I was eating slower than a normal person. We didn't need seconds on anything so I dont remember them asking. I did notice the server disappear though and seem somewhat frazzled or overwhelmed at times with it being so busy. I've heard the same from a lot of other people too.

My experience is like the pp - we had to decline a few times because the skewers kept coming around so many times.

This was when they still had lettuce wraps. I requested the salad and it was brought without issue. The noodles were great, but I didn't notice the vegetables that came with it.

I think, just based on reviews, it's always kind of hit or miss service wise but generally the food seems to always be tasty. I don't really think vegetables are going to be a corner cutting measure, honestly.

We have never had any problems with Ohana. Service and food has always been great!

I wouldn't be 100% sure that dropping pork skewers is about cutting corners.

I suspect that it became easier to prep a kosher meal in that kitchen when they dropped them.

Kosher isn't just about pork. If I remeber correctly all kosher meals are handled by a single kitchen and are packaged meals. Kosher is about meat and milk not being mixed, no shellfish, animals being slaughtered a certain way, and many other things. Be fact there is still shrimp shows it isn't about kosher.

Crud, I always forget the shellfish. This is what happens when you do RAGBRAI with Jews: You remember the pork, because of the pork chops. But you will be stunned to hear that shrimp skewers aren't a staple of a bike ride in Iowa. :cool1:

The pork is the most known one so no biggie. It would be a good though. My rabbi actually uses relaxed kosher laws at Disney because he hates the tv dinner type kosher meals they give and the fact you pay the exact same and it isn't unlimited. He basically says as long as you don't eat whatever version of kosher you follow then the frood prep isn't a big deal.

I have not notice cuts at 'Ohana in regards to food. As much as I disliked our last visit, I cannto complain about the amount of food that was offered.

Went about a month ago as well. We got butter and there was enough pot stickers and wings to satisfy a group of 4.

Sometimes service can be really hit or miss though, especially when it comes to drinks

We ate there in March and got butter and seconds and thirds of everything. But I guess you could say that our service wasn't as attentive as in the past because instead of being offered more, we had to ask but he happily brought us more each time.

I've never known them to offer you more food except for the meats they will come around with those multiple times, otherwise if you want more you need to ask for it. We went last year and we didn't recieve butter with the bread so I asked for some and it was brought without issue, the food was plentiful enough for our party of six and when we were running low on noodles and potstickers I asked for more and those were brought out to us, it took a little time but we did get everything we asked for. I will say the last few times we've been our servers have been very frazzled and hard to find at times, so sometimes I'd just stop another server and ask them if they could send ours back around.

We've been a few times now and I do miss the selection that they had in the past. I don't mind smaller portions on some things since it seems like so much is wasted and they don't let you wrap anything to go. When we went in December the meat portions our waiter was giving us were huge. He gave my mom practically the entire skewer of shrimp because I didn't want any. I thought the service the best of all the times we've been as well.

Lol!!! I would bet they would happily give bread and butter seconds and have you fill up on that vs the expensive stuff.

That said, I do have complaints about 'Ohana, but not about your subject.

the service is really hit or miss and always has been. I don't think it is really that they are trying to shortchange people on food... I think honestly Ohana must be a magnet for lazy servers who can hide in all of the chaos. I have had great servers but also the ones who disappear and it is a gimme tip unless they really screw up badly. I've been there and seen servers spending 90% of the time standing against the wall not moving (one time it was mine but every time I've seen some just standing there).

That said i am looking forward to going. The one time I saw my server standing against the wall for like 10 minutes I got up and asked for what I wanted and once she realized I saw her there I guess she didn't feel she could hide in plain sight anymore :-p

We've never had any problems. They came around with the meat skewers plenty of times and always gave us a lot, more than we needed. We just asked for more of the appetizers and they brought them. I believe they did offer us seconds on the bread pudding, but we were of course too full by them :)

Didn't they used to offer 3 different sauces? I don't think they do that anymore either.

While they never offered seconds on wings/noodles/veggies last year, my Dad wasn't shy about asking for them. He loves those wings, and would probably eat several servings over the skewers. While our CMs have seemed rushed and overworked the last few visits, they've never been stingy when we've asked for seconds.

I have to say I've been twice and I don't ever remember getting butter with bread at Ohana.
