Are you still required to use the wave phone to contact each other or have they now made calls and texting available though the app?

Calls are not possible through the app. Texting can be but it's not always too great. Table next to us basically gave up on texting by day 3.

What about for the kids clubs? I remember using it for that with my kids two years ago.

As noted, no calls on the app, but you can text. Only issue, there's no "alert" sound or vibration. You have to just check randomly to see if you've gotten a message.
