Ok I know that there is no such thing as a dumb question, but I think this might come pretty close......

I hate drinking water (except when I exercise). I got totally watered out while I was pregnant.

So what's the big deal with water? How is it going to help me lose weight?

I get plenty of sleep. I am energetic. Why doesn't Crystal Light count as water?

Help me understand.

Melissa

Can I drink Crystal Light®?
This beverage uses aspartame as a sweetener. Use it in moderation as our clinical observations indicate aspartame may slow down weight loss in certain individuals.

How much water should a person doing Atkins be drinking?

On any eating regimen, a minimum of 64 ounces, or eight 8-ounce glasses, of water per day is the usual recommendation. Many people, particularly women, suffer from inadequate hydration, so it is important to be diligent about drinking water throughout the day. Water consumption will also help flush toxins from your body and combat such problems as constipation and bad breath. Note that coffee, tea and diet sodas do not apply to the daily minimum.

Water is a priceless commodity when it comes to losing weight.

Once you add ANYTHING to water it is then treated by the body as a food, so I say no to the Crystal Light. I asked the very same question at Jenny Craig, this is the answer I got!

The Atkins site answers most of the questions about water HERE.

I also just saw on a newscast the other day that water helps speed up your metabolism also.

These are all the answers I was looking for. Thanks!

Here's a recent, relevant news story.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A long-awaited nutrition report suggests lowering the maximum amount of salt Americans should allow themselves each day, even though the average person already consumes far more than is recommended.

But don't worry about water, the report says; people easily get plenty, so let thirst be your guide instead of counting glasses. If you prefer coffee or soda, all beverages, even those with caffeine, count toward the daily water allotment, says Wednesday's report from the Institute of Medicine.

The institute is a scientific organization that sets the nation's recommended levels of nutrients.

...

The adage "drink at least eight glasses of water a day" is unnecessary. The average healthy person gets plenty of fluid, from beverages as well as the water content of fruits, vegetables and other fluids. So don't bother counting, just drink when thirsty.

I know that I lose much better if a drink a lot of water. I think it helps me lose weight much quicker than if I wasn't drinking it. I challenge myself..... I get those liter bottles of water and I see how many I can drink in a day. (I just keep refilling them)
Those are the days I spend lots of time in the bathroom but I also see a difference on the scales the next day.

I like that Washington Post article. Whew! I just really can't stand drinking water. It's great when I exercise, but other than that I could do without it!

Melissa

By the way Brian you and Robbie look AWESOME!!!!! What an achievement. You both look like totally different and much happier people. Congratulations to you both on your loss!

What about adding some fresh lemon juice to your water? I find myself not wanting to drink my water in the winter time cuz I am so cold all of the time, so now I just heat my water and then add a slice of lemon to it. This has helped me get my water in and also I do find that it aids in my weight loss. Drinking just coffee and hot tea just doesn't do it for me.

I would LOVE to see this report. I'm sure it's from the same geniuses who suggest we eat more grains and bread than any other food group.

Adding anything to water changes what it does to and for the body, how can they come up with this conclusion? As hard as it is for me to drink water I see a marked difference in my health and my weight loss when I drink more.

No. It is NOT from the USDA. As the aritcle mentioned, the report comes from the national Institute of Medicine:

"The nation turns to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies for science-based advice on matters of biomedical science, medicine, and health. A nonprofit organization specifically created for this purpose as well as an honorific membership organization, the IOM was chartered in 1970 as a component of the National Academy of Sciences. The Institute provides a vital service by working outside the framework of government to ensure scientifically informed analysis and independent guidance. The IOM’s mission is to serve as adviser to the nation to improve health. The Institute provides unbiased, evidence-based, and authoritative information and advice concerning health and science policy to policy-makers, professionals, leaders in every sector of society, and the public at large."

Through research and scientific method.

There had never been any science behind any of the "recommendations" that have been bandied about concerning water. The whole "adding anything to water changes it..." line of reasoning was suspect from the start. A couple of years ago, scientists realized that there was insufficient research concerning water consumption to support any of the recommendations that were in current traffic. So several major research studies were begun. The first studies have finally completed and scientists now have some basis on which to make defensible recommendations regarding water.

Mac, I have to tell you, I absolutley hated water! during all my pregnancy when they would check my urine every month, they would insist that I drinK more! I really did hate it! Once I started trying to lose weight and began WISH and just talking to other people about water, I realized it was gonna have to be part of my journey!
Anyway, I know nothing scientific about it but I can tell you this, THINK ABOUT IT........
every single weight plan that has ever surfaced has suggested you drink water. The common sense in that along made me know that water is a good thing.
Anyway heres what I did (sorry for all of those who have heard me say this over and over again......but I worked for me!)

Buy yourself some water bottles and everyday refill them and line em up somewhere were you can not avoid them!
I line up at least 4 24 oz. bottle next to the sink cause I am always doing the dishes.
Before I knew it I wasn;t even drinking anything else through out the day except with meals (diet soda crystal light) I mean I actually think for a while I poisoned myself by drinking to much becasue I actually began to crave it! Now I only drink the 4 bottles. I actually have to STRETCH out 4 bottles through out my day. Good luck.

Although I can't stand drinking water I have started to incorporate more of it into my daily routine. I am not even close to drinking half of my body weight. I am up to about 48oz a day give or take. So that's a start.

It is very difficult to poison yourself by drinking water; the warnings usually talk about having to dring 3 liters over the course of an hour. That's a lot of water in such a short period of time (but it is a real concern if you do drink that much)!

One of my favorite ways of staying hydrated is fruit, and it provides side-benefits of essential vitamins, minerals and especially fiber, something which a lot of Americans need more of. Springtime its strawberries and grapes; Summertime its watermelon.

I keep a 1 gallon cotainer of water with a spicket (sp? ) on it in the refridgerator so that whenever I am near the kitchen I will get a few sips of water. That way I am getting more water than I usually would but I am not forcing myself to drink a whole bottle at once.
