I bought the coolest water bottles for my kids today but when I brought them to the dishwasher and started peeling off stickers... one said that it contained LEAD and couldnt be sold in California as it has been shown to cause: you know, all that bad stuff.

WTH?
If people in California cant drink out of it... why in the world would I want my kids to drink from them? :confused3 I'm cheap I'll admit that. But they were $4.50 each. I'm taking them back.

I don't know about the lead issue, 'cause I don't think you can sell any food related thing with lead, but I could be wrong. But I DO know that California has passed some extreme laws with regard to warnings for anything that might contain carcinogens, so there are literally buildings in Cali that have signs on them that they may be bad for your health...IMO, it kind of numbs the fact when there are real dangers out there, if everything is labeled, KWIM? Anyway, I don't blame you for taking them back. I just got some nice steel ones (no plastic issues) through our school from Klean Kanteen, they are nice but pricey. But it will save me from buying (and lugging) little water bottles for the kids' lunches.

Yes, I think it was last Spring/Summer that water bottles left and right were being recalled containing LEAD.

Get your water bottles from Naglene. http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/

They even had a problem with some of their bottles having lead but they have since changed all that!!

That is crazy. Why would they make a water bottle that contains enough lead to require a warning label?

(California has warning labels on everything. I noticed one in the airport and a few in other places.)

I have read that even plastic water bottles can be harmful. The problem begins when the plastic heats up. It then releases chemicals into the water. Also, if you heat something up in the microwave on a regular plastic plate or bowl, same thing. Same thing with some types of pans. When they start to wear out or get scratched, they can release substances into the food when they are heated up. It's not good to put any pan on high heat on the stove.

Teacup, there is no way I would use those water bottles. I would do like you are doing and take them back.

Just guessing here, what came to mind was that CA laws were probably passed because of that lawsuit against the PSE & G (power plant (?)) that was in the movie, Erin Brockovich. It was the largest lawsuit, at the time, in the history of CA, so they probably have created stricter law/regulations than the rest of the country.

However, just because other states haven't taken the time to create such laws/regulations, and probably some may be a little over the top, :confused3 I wouldn't drink out of those bottles either. :scared: Take them back!

Yes, last year (or so) a new law/regulation has been passed that some of the non-stick coating can no longer be manufactured by 2012 (or thereabout.) Testing had shown the majority of people have too highly elevated levels of the non-stick coating in their bodies.

Of course, manufacturers claim the substance is safe if a non-stick pot is used exactly, according to their recommendations, not too high heat, some oil during cooking, etc. :rolleyes1 But, who uses it exactly as described? :confused3

Right after the new law was passed, almost every pot company started having major sales on their non-stick cookware. Amazon was practically giving the stuff away. Yeah, unload the stuff and poison as many people you can before 2012. :sad2:
