Wasp and Bees- What to do?

My DH is VERY allergic to Wasp & Bees. We have to carry an EPI PIN with us every where in case he gets stung. It could be life threatening to him if he is stung and does not have this with him.

His body immediately swells and shuts his airsupply off - no matter what part of the body he is stung. The Epi-pen is a rx injection- syringe & medication that is prefilled and ready for use. It comes in a box that we do not open unless needed.

Do you think we will have problems taking this with us to the parks thru check-in when they search your bags?

And are these critters bad in Florida?

Hi Mamahauldren,

I think you will be fine. I have a very asthmatic son who is deathly allergic to nuts and we aren't certain about bees yet. (we've had to epi pen him twice in his 12 years...yikes!)

If questioned, just explain what it is (as I do). Some of these young buck security folks may not know what it is. You should have no problems. Same thing at the airport, you should be just fine. Have fun and be careful!

I don't think you should have a problem with carrying an epi-pen, anymore than a diabetic on insulin would have a problem bringing in hypodermic syringes for their use. You might want to take the added step of having your doctor write a letter that it is medically necessary that you carry the epi-pen at all times. Disney security probably encounters them all the time.

I've been to WDW several times and have never had a problem with bees and wasps. But then, I'm not allergic so I don't tend to notice them.

However, I do live in SC, and bees and wasps do get in my house quite frequently. They make the rest of my family really nervous. I have three cats, so I'm reluctant to use spray wasp and bee killer.

What I use, and it drops the little boogers in mid-air, is hair spray. Hit them with a shot of that until they fall and then put them out of their misery. The weight of the hair spray keeps them from being able to fly. And the effect is pretty much immediate.

If you're concerned, you might get a couple of cans of travel sized hair spray and just carry them in your bag on your person in the park.

Do be careful while you are there. Last year at Epcot during the Food & Wine Festival we found the bees and wasps to be more than an annoyance. They were difficult enough that we gave up eating at the food booths and left.

They seemed to be particularly attracted to the food booths serving sweets. I haven't noticed this on other visits, but I would have been very worried if I or a relative had an allergy to their sting. They were pretty numerous and rather aggressive. No doubt it's less of a problem if you're there other than during the F&W Festival, when less food is being served out of doors.

As for the Epi Pen, you shouldn't have a problem. My mother is diabetic and travels on planes, etc., with them with no problem.

Just tell him to stay away from garbage cans and flowers since thats where they love to hang out! A doctors note or the prescription label should be all you need to carry it with you.

My DH got a very bad sting from a bee in 02. As fate would have it, we were walking right past the the first aid station by Crystal Palace. The bee flew under his sunglasses and got stuck, stinging DH right in the corner of his eye. It was BAD! He still has a scar from it. Anywho, the point is that there are bees around, I've seen a number of them before the incident above, and after. Just bring that epi pen. I will say that they nurse on duty was fabulous. She treated DH with ice and benadryl, and was very good with the warnings of an impending reaction. Just be careful.

I also am allergic to bees. We were at Disney in June and I brought my Epi-pen in my backpack in the parks and was never questioned about it. I kept it in the box it comes in with the prescription label on it just in case I was questioned. I didn't notice many bees there, just around garbage cans once in a while.

as long as u have the sealed box with the rx on it, nobody should/has the right to give you a hard time!!
