Wasn't charged for parking for our one night

Ya, it does sound like a mess. We do mostly DVC stays now, maybe a resort night here and there, but it sounds like its just all messed up.
If you stay on points, you shouldn't even be charged for parking at the resorts according to the rules.

Here's a crazy thought:
We know thanks to on ride photos that they can remotely read magicbands, so why not simply read the magic bands on the way in and out. No need to talk with gaurds, they would know when your car is there and when it isn't.

Better still is get rid of parking charges and stop nickel and diming guests.

Be nice wouldn't it. I figure the resort fees are next. I suppose not with DVC though.
Definitely not with DVC, hopefully Disney isn't that stupid. Yes, the economy will handle it for now, but when it crashes and it will do so, possibly globally, locals will end up being what keeps the parks a float until the economy rights itself. But at the rate they are going, locals won't be forgiving enough to go back when that happens opting to go to the competition instead.

Because not everyone that comes in via car is parking a car (uber, lyft, etc).

Exactly. There is no way to automate parking. Not that I can come up with. Too many guests can arrive in a vehicle that isn't going to park there. They sure don't want to get automatically charged for parking. That would be pretty ridiculous too. There would be no reason at all to make all those folks have to go down to the desk to explain that they didn't have a car and to remove the automatic parking charge. Not when the guards should be able to easily do it when they have to scan in a guest anyway. Heck, let them get rid of the side where someone can use their band to scan in if it would help, leave that side for buses only (when the buses use the same gate). Use the parking fee to hire a 2nd guard if needed, when needed.

Otherwise, I'd be all for getting rid of a parking fee. Though I'd be shocked to see them roll it back.

DVC can still pay for rooms with cash and then they do pay for parking.
What if you're staying at DVC on a cash reservation and aren't a DVC member? Is it the resort that doesn't charge parking, or is it the person (DVC member)? I'm paying cash for BLT later this year and would love to hear that I'm not going to have to pay to park the car.

DVC member through DVC, not the resort.
If you pay cash through Disney you will pay for parking. It's just like a traditional resort reservation in the end.
For instance, if you rent via cash through Disney, you get daily housekeeping. DVC stays on points do not (without paying extra that is)

My comment was more towards DVC members who opt to rent rooms at nonDVC resorts. Such as the OP did. They paid cash to stay at POR at the start of their stay. This would normally incur a parking charge. However, DVC can also use points to stay in a nonDVC resort. I would assume (though don't know for sure) that they would NOT incur a parking fee in this case. But am not certain on this.

Wonder if they will, at some point, go to different lanes - one lane for drop-offs and short term stays, one lane for parking for overnighters.

I can't believe it is up to the guard at the entry shack to check that box. Would make it awfully easy for them to be bribed.......pirate:

I was charged for parking and never stopped at a guard shack at all (only entered resorts on DME or park buses, did not have a car). I have no idea how they decide who to charge.

More than likely, someone who did drive, was accidentally put on your room.
Not to make it right by any means, just as a way to explain that most likely, the guard didn't record the room number correctly. Probably didn't give them an automated way to notate it, knowing them and how convoluted they like to make what should be easy.
It would explain why some who do drive don't get charged and some who don't do.
Anyway, I don't know much, just that I had a conversation with the resort manager when the parking fee started to ask just how they planned to capture it, since guests could bypass the desk and all. That's who told me it was the guard that had to record it. Just didn't tell me how. Now, I get that CMs don't always know but in this case, I have to assume that the manager at the resort would be the one to know since the resort is where the fee is charged. I wouldn't take this answer from someone on the phone, for example.

You'll pay for parking.

No, I was thinking each time you go in and out, once a day

We drive some times, fly the others. When I drive, I pull in to the resort, park my car, and say see you when we check out. One time in, one time out. No matter how many days.

I will gladly pay the parking fee this trip as it is a rule now.

You'll pay for parking.

Yeah, I am staying at OKW (Gurgling Suitcase strikes again) on AP rate cash ressie. I know I will have to pay. However, would gladly just swap money with them as far as no daily housekeeping in exchange for parking if that is offered.

They don't offer the no housekeeping gift card opt out at the Deluxe resorts
