This reminds me of the time when my mother, for unknown reasons--possibly related to her medications, didn't wash the sheets on my bed alone for about two months. I was 11 at the time, and not allowed to run the washing machine. Finally I asked her about it, "Oh, every time I go to your room to get your sheets to wash, you've already made your bed." WTH? I still don't get it.

. YUCK! You are in contact with that fabric for 8 hours every night for every night...would you wear the same pair of jeans for a month? Or the same pair of pajamas for a month? Or the same pair of socks for a month?
He didn't even think it was a big deal. That should have been my first clue, but he had grown up in a house with a single dad. To this day I have never seen my DH do a load of laundry, I do it all (I also do 99% of the other housework but that's a whole other thread
)
For most people doing the job themselves, changing them twice a week isn't a priority.
