My friend just called me, she said last friday she got up to use the restroom in the middle of the night and there was water all over the floor about a inch she said. She could not find where it was coming from, She and her DH were up at 3:00 am looking for the leak, her DH went to the garage to get a flashlight, on the way through the laundry room, he found it. The washing machine hose had a burst and water was just gushing out. When they tried to turn the water off it just kept coming out, so they had to turn the water off to the whole house at the road. There laundry room and master bath share a wall. Needless to say they were up all night cleaning it up, a friend came over the next day, he is a plumber, and found that the pipe had broken in the wall, so he fixed it for them at no charge, my friends DH is a tile guy, and they trade out work all time with other contractors.
Well they thought that they got all the water taken care of, well the other wall in the laundry room is shared with the formal living room which is a game room for there kid's. It has a terrible smell. she found the carpet is wet all along the shared wall, they have tried the wet dry vac, and they rented a cleaner, but the smell just comes back. The really can't afford proffessional cleaner, as her DH is just getting back to working steady, he just landed a big development with custom homes.

Any suggestion on something that would take the smell out of the carpet?

Depending on how long it has been, it might already have mold in it. Not much you can do if that is the case except to tear it out and start over.

If it has not been that long for mold to develope I would suggest renting a blower to dry the area. Our neighbors got flooding from Sandy and that is what the restoration company did. they brought in several of the blowers pictured below (see link)

Also the padding could be damaged and need replaced. If the padding is still wet and the floors are wooden the floors could be damaged as well. I would peel back the carpet and look before its too late and the damage spreads.

They probably will need to tear the carpet out. They should also check to see if the smell of mold is actually from the sheetrock, if the bottom of the sheetrock got wet, that could be what it is.

Burst washing machine hoses rank very high on the list of things that insurance companies often get claims for.

Many kinds of wall to wall carpet padding take forever to dry after a flood. Many have a water resistant film on top to keep small spills from soaking in and that keeps the water from big floods in there longer.

So you need to take up the carpet first thing after a flood and take out the padding to dry upside down outside.

Insurance covered ours they even applied our hours cleaning up towards our deductible.
