Washer/Dryer Recommendations

I am going shopping for a new washer & dryer. I have no idea what I want. What do you have? What are your likes & dislikes?

I just had to buy one on an emergency basis and I got a Samsung Front Loader washer and dryer. They were $599 each. I really like them.

I wouldn't get Maytag, they are no longer the best. I know several people who had trouble with them, myself included. The motor in mine quite after about 20 mos. and luckily, it was covered by the warrenty which was 24 mos.

I will never do a frigidaire front load again.
It was horrible.

We bought the Bosch front loader about 2 years ago. I would buy it again. It does a good job washing and is very gentle on the clothes.

Would never buy a front loader again. The smell is not worth it. When I complained to a service tech, he pulled out a copy of a newspaper story pointing out how normal it was. He must get the question a lot and was prepared with a large pile of the stories.

I've only had mine a few weeks so no smell. My coworkers have had theirs for years and they don't have a smell but they do leave the door open and wipe out the front gasket when they are done with the laundry.

Op, where is your laundry area? If you have a whole room on the main floor or basement you can choose what you want. If you have a laundry closet, be careful of a front loader unless you can frequently leave the closet doors and washer door open. If you're on an upper floor, consider vibration problems with any washer.

We have a laundry 'area' with bifold doors (aka a closet) on the lower level of our split. We chose a Whirlpool Cabrio top loader set (no center agitator stick, fits a HUGE amount of clothes, is HE) and I've had it for 2 years. I've been thrilled with it. No smell issues with my top loader, I leave the top open to air out and I can still close the closet doors.

got a kenmore front loader washer about a month ago - love the way it cleans and gets the water out but that sucker is NOISY!

We have a one story house with a laundry room. I didn't realize that front loaders could smell. I guess I just need to leave the door open all the time? That will be a challenge for DH b/c he's always afraid the cat will jump in there.

For those of you that have the front loaders, do you have the stand/drawer on the bottom? Do you think you really need it?

First off, they don't *have* to smell. Just leave the door cracked open a bit--it doesn't have to be the full way open. Also, you will notice that inside the door is a rubber gasket that goes around the door. After each load, some water collects in there. No big deal. Once you are through will all you loads, just take a towel and wipe it out.

As for the pedastals, I did not get them and my coworkers don't have them either. I didn't need the washers elevated and I didn't need storage drawers. They are approx. 13 inches high so you can't really stand up a bottle of detergent in them. I guess you could store smaller stuff in there.

I chose to get a top loader. So far, so good, meeting our needs. I bought all new appliances so cost was a factor to me--esp. when they have such a short life span these days!

They sound just like the set I got a couple weeks ago, also on an emergency basis (old washer imploded ) - I found them at hhgregg

I love them too! I was shocked at how much better my clothes turn out with this set compared to my old (well only 6 years old) top loader Maytag. My DH likes that the washer has direct drive - no belts to burn out. I like that the washer has the VRT (vibration reduction = loads won't get out of balance) system built in, so I don't have to go in and redistribute the clothes, and that the washer spins everything so fast that the dryer takes hardly any time to dry. It has the moisture meter that turns the dryer off when it senses everything's dry, and I think the last time I did sheets it only took about 15 mins to dry them

I also have no problem with any smell, and just wipe the window and gasket and leave the door cracked for a little while. But since I've read all the complaints about front loaders smell that makes me paranoid I went ahead and bought some new stuff called "Afresh" that takes care of it - just in case I ever notice anything I'll already have it on hand
