Of course you don't have to replace both at the same time - but the efficiency of the new vs. old may make it worth it to. You can sell the other set or donate the other set... even if you don't, and the delivery people remove it, it's either passed along to someone else or recycled.

Gosh, the attitudes towards people who replace with a matched set - - if you want to and can afford to replace both at the same time - go ahead!

Oh....and you can either sell or gove or donate your used appliance. Due to the age and conditin of our washer, we freecycled it.

Just because you choose to replace a functioning item for looks...doesn't mean the old appliance will land in a dump. In this economy---there are people who need a new washer or dryer but don't have the option of heading to Lowes or Sears.

I think manufacturer's made that up to sell more dryers.

We are on our first dryer (10 years old) and third washer. I'm not about to replace a perfectly good dryer every 3 years because all the washers are junk.

I gathered OP was asking if it was necessary. Most responses are that it isn't necessary. While energy efficiency is an excellent benefit, that by itself doesn't mean it is necessary to by a new set vs just the appliance that needs replacing.

Our current dryer has been with us for 9 years. The washer has been with us for 3 1/2 years and they are two different makes.

For years we used a reconditioned washer and dryer that my husband's uncle sold us for $100. They were not a set and they lasted 26 years after he reconditioned them. My husband did some minor repair-belts, etc. Now we have a matched set of front loaders and love them but I think the rumor that you 'should' replace both at the same time probably came from an appliance salesman. kwim? lol!
