Was Supposed to Have Left But Bank MAching Ate my ATM Card

I am a bank manager. At our company we have no choice when it comes to returning card that do not belong to our bank. When a card is sucked in by the machine it is tagged as "captured" and most of the time the bank that owns the card "hot" cards it and makes it useless. I have called for clients to try and return their cards but have to get permission from the bank it was issued from. In every case when it came to a pre paid card the company the owned the card said I could not return the card and a new one with was being issued. The money transfers to the new card automatically.

The manager should have been able to explain this to upfront instead of wasting your time.

Just remember while you are in Disney the manager that upset you is stuck at work.:woohoo:

I agree with Riverhill and it's probably pretty standard across the board. I do the servicing for our four ATMs. We can give back our own cards (after we've verified there's no fraud on the account), but we can NOT give back cards from another financial institution. Period. It's up to that institution and I have never had them not have me shred the cards unfortunately. I don't know why she didn't explain this to you upfront though.

Wait, I thought you were delaying your trip because if you let it eat your card you were out the almost $100. So, you could have just gone and then called the card company and gotten it reissued? I would definitely just do that next time.

I hope this didn't ruin your vacation start.

and see,I have never seen one that you DON'T put your card into...still..I would certainly not delay a Disney trip because of this..it'll sort out, but as someone else said, a day lost at Disney will cost you much more than $98.

I haven't seen one of those around for years- here you swipe the card but it never leaves your hand.
Years ago I went to a drive up atm (not my own bank) on a Sunday and I was leaving for vacation Monday at 10-the atm ate my card and I really needed that card for vacation-it was my debit checking card and all my hotel money, spending money etc was on there! I was at the bank at opening and they gave me card back once I gave them proper ID. Otherwise I would have had to go to my own bank that morning and write myself a check for all the money or put everything on credit cards which I was really trying ot avoid! But for only 98.00 I would have just went on my merry way, left for vacation and not thought twice about it.

I have worked for banks for years...first the machine does not automatically shred your card BUT we are instructed NOT to give cards back if they are not customers of our bank (security reasons) I would have had you contact the bank you got your card from and have them reissue you a new one. Bankers are yelled at all the time for this happening. Most of the time, the person took too long to grab their card and the machine takes the card back in so no one else gets it.

Don't let this ruin your vacation. You will get your card back with no risk of anyone else having your money.

That's what I was thinking, too.

Call the company the card was from, and go on vacation. By the time you get home, you should have a replacement card (they might even be able to fedex to your resort). I certainly wouldn't miss the start of my vacation over it.

of coruse if the $98 was so vital to the trip, then maybe the trip is a bad idea to begin with.

There it is!! And it only took 26 posts.

Well lets be real. Delaying the trip by one day probably cost more than the $98 anyway. Lost hotel reservations (most don't let you cancel at the last minute anymore), cost of changing flights, etc. Not to mention how devastated and upset the kids would be.

And yes, if not having that extra $100 causes a hardship for you taking a Disney Trip (which costs $$$$$$$) and you don't have an alternate way of getting that $100, then you are cutting your budget too close and shouldn't go.

From the OP I got the impression that they are driving and probably not that far away, and that the delay didn't cause any problems other than annoyance. If I were to delay the start of the trip I'd have all those problems, but I would *mention them* in a post if I started one about it. Since she didn't, and didn't indicate any problems but annoyance in the delay, it probably wasn't an issue.

I didn't see the OP mention ANTHING related to all that in her post.

If putting your high and mighty imagination into hyperdrive makes it easier to judge people from your perch, so be it.

I work at a financial institution, and that's normal. You should always take your card out as soon as the transaction in complete.

Many financial institutions will not return a card to a non-customer.

Lesson learned the hard way, but I wouldn't let it delay your vacation.
