We just had a competition about 6 hours away. We had booked a suite at Amerisuites, well in advance, because we were going to be 2 adults 4 kids. We booked online, and the reservation was for "Reserved:double/double suite with pullout sleeper sofa". THis cost more than the King room or King Suite. Then the request was "non smoking." I then called Reservations to ask how to enter kids since the website only asked for adults (2)..."there's no need for that info since you BOOKED the double-double price category." We arrived 5pm. Our ROOM was a King Bed. That's it. And hotel booked solid. Front Desk began calling other hotels in area, and quoting us those prices (all more expensive). I stepped outside and called reservations. Was told there's a comment in my reservation several days prior saying "Call guest.Ask if can be accomodated in King Suite." And then another note, that "Alicia" switched us to King Suite a few days ago, then Alicia bumped us down to a King Room that afternoon. No call asking us.
I remembered advice learned on THIS board after a problem in a WDW hotel. I did NOT leave. I went back to the desk (turns out Alicia is the person working the desk, lol). Told her that since she cannot help me, I'd like to speak to her manager...if he isn't available, then call the district manager or regional manager. Just let me talk with A manager. She went away, came back with a letter. They sent us about 15 minutes farther away, to a Country Inn and Suites. The letter was for Country Inn to bill Amerisuites for our room. They had a King Suite available, and would throw in a rollaway cot. We arrived there, and someone had JUST cancelled a queen/queen with pullout sofa. So we got it. The pullout sofa was broken in the bottom - the foot of the mattress had nothing holding it up so dipped to the floor so we put 2 kids on it (their feet didn't reach that far anyway).
Reservations at Amerisuites says that since Hyatt bought them, room configurations are now only a request. So you can book a room for 6 people (if only 2 are adults), and get there to find only a King Bed. That is my public service announcement.
