Warning about pizza delivery

This may have been posted before, and if I'm repeating something I apologize.

My friend was staying at SSR over the weekend and when she came back to her room the first night there was a pizza delivery menu shoved under her door. She didn't think anything of it, just stuck in on the counter. The next morning she had a problem with her door lock, and called the maintenance guys. When the repairman came in, he saw the ad and said: "You didn't call those guys, did you?" My friend said no, and he said: "Good, because it's a scam. Notice there is no address on the page? The number goes to a pre-paid cell phone. They take your credit card number for the pizza order, and you never get a pizza. We're trying to crack down on them, but they keep sneaking in from Downtown and shoving these things under the doors." He asked if he could take the ad and give it to the office. Of course, she gave it to him.

Bottom line-don't order pizza-or anything else from a menu shoved under your door!

This is kind of disturbing if true because I stayed at the BWV for about two weeks in Dec. We had to get those under our door almost every other day. What exactly is the purpose of the security gates since I've rarely heard of anyone getting turned away if they said they were going shopping or to visit a food court???

That sounds like something they need to tell people at check-in as they're going over things so that they're aware of it.

We just returned from a visit and got pizza menus shoved in the door at both Pop Century (twice) and Old Key West (once).

I found it very annoying as at PC it was shoved in the door at about 4am and woke me up.

If this is really a scam then Disney security needs to crack down on this HARD and immediately. If it is an actual pizza delivery place doing it, Disney also needs to crack down, as I'm sure they have a "No soliciting" policy.

We got two on the same night under our door at All Stars in January -- I didn't even pay any attention to it.

I will say though when we pulled into Grand Floridian one day I noticed a no solicitations sign on the security booth - I asked the lady at the guard gate if they had alot of solicitors and she said they have alot of problem with pizza places wanting to distribute flyers.

Seriously though even if they managed to keep them out through the security gate there is nothing stopping anyone from getting to resorts via bus, boat, monorail, or foot.

The easy short-term solution is to block those specific outgoing phone numbers on the PBX. You just need to make it complicated enough for the bad guys, and they'll pick on some other hotel.

Other than this being an annoyance, I've not read that this is a scam. Thanks for posting, I appreciate the information.

I recall some of them as legitimate pizza places. Doesn't matter---I've got Giordano's in my cell.

Thank you for the heads-up! We don't ever order 3rd party food to the rooms at Disney, but it's good to know to keep an eye out for things like this.

They'd still have to print new flyers and distribute them. If they block the numbers as the flyers show up, the scammers can easily go broke just from the costs of printing and phone purchases. I wonder if they hit the other resorts in the DTD area (not just the Disney ones).

Really, how often do you use your villa phone. Isn't that what cell phones are for? So blocking the numbers, would maybe help a small percentage if any. JW

It's not about making it impossible---it's just about making it less profitable to to spam the WDW hotels than others in the area.

To use the old analogy: if you and a buddy are confronted by a bear, you don't need to run faster than the bear. You just need to run faster than your buddy.

The thing the maintenance guy pointed out on this flyer was that there was no street address listed. He said when you call, ask where they are physically located, tell them you want to pick it up. If they can't or won't readily give you an address, it's probably a scam.

I didn't know about this - thank you for the information. I guess I would have thought Disney had security cameras in all the hallways even at SSR. If they did, seems like they could catch these people pretty quickly.

Interesting. DH and I must have had at least 15 of those things under our door at SSR in Dec. Glad we didn't order....we thought it was because the pizza at AP was so bad....

When we were at BWV a couple of weeks ago they had a notice on each of the phones in our 2 bedroom not to give out personal information such as credit card numbers if you did not initiate the call. It had some additional info which I didn't pay much attention to.

Maybe this is how they are cracking down. I thought it was odd at the time but now I understand.

Thanks for this information! I was amazed to think that WDW would allow the menus to be distributed. We assumed they were sneaking in, which is disturbing enough, but had no idea it was part of a scam.
