for the benefit of pets and pet owners, my intentions are to join together several opposing groups that dont need to be opposing. there can be common ground

However, it is obvious by posts here, my work will be cut out for me.

I can guarantee you that no reputable rescue will ever endorse "Professional Breeders." Because they are out for profit only, they breed indiscriminately and do not screen their puppy homes. As evidenced by the Mini Aussies on your forum - all you have to do is show up with cash on hand. Because they don't screen homes, buyers are impulsive and do not do their homework - one of the main reasons dogs are found in rescue. They also breed in too high of quantities to guarantee that they will take their puppies back at any time during their lifetime, thus creating another need for rescues to exist to clean up after them

If all breeders were responsible breeders, rescues would not be needed.

I notice you have basset and puggle puppies advertised on your forum.

Can you please share with the class what health screenings were done on the all 4 parents to insure that your puppies are the healthiest they can be genetically?

Does your contract stipulate that you will be responsible for the litters you put on the ground and will take a puppy back for any reason during the dog's lifetime if the puppy buyer can no longer keep it?

considering I do rescue and didnt raise the puggles I can hardly give you that info

The bassets, I own 2 boys and 2 girls, they go the vet every year for check up and shots. They have no entropians or other eye issues, no hip issues, no allergies, hearts are good etc... They get along fantastic with our children and all the other animals we have. We have never had any aggression issues or poor temperament. The puppies are health guaranteed, in fact we offer a lifetime health guarantee against genetic issues and you dont have to return your puppy/dog in order to benefit. serious puppy buyers are welcome to come visit my bassets
Maybe I am not your perfect breeder, but I think I am a decent breeder who tries hard.

again, this doesnt need to be a "we" or "them" camp. wish you would stop trying to make it so


and in answer to your other question.. yes I do have a contract that states we take back any dog for any reason if you cant keep it.

I will agree to disagree at this point. One can never discuss things and get anywhere with close minded people

You said they don't have hip issues - do the parents have Penn Hipp or OFA certifications? Both hips and elbows?

Have the parents been CERF'd to make sure there are no eye problems?

Bassets are prone to Von Willebrand's disease. Have you done careful pedigree checks and blood tests to make sure you are not breeding carriers of this disease?

Or is this all just supposition on your part on what you see?

One huge sign of a not very reputable breeder is one who does not want to spend the money on the proper health screenings of their dogs. Health screenings are expensive and cut into profits, right?

Yes there are two camps and always will be until the one camp becomes responsible enough to put rescues pretty much out of business.

It is not being close minded. It is being for the dog and not supporting puppy mills and indiscriminate breeding.

I do bassets, which is why this is getting under my skin so badly - we see so many sickly, poorly bred bassets in rescue that it just irks the hell out of me to see somebody actually promoting puppy mills.

Now for my last question - I noticed that there is a basset club right there in Missouri. Are you a member in good standing?

Because anybody that is a conscientous breeder would always be a member of their breed club to make sure they keep up on the breed, the health and genetic issues, and would want all the info they could get their hands on to breed for the betterment of the basset breed. Or is it just profit?

I can relate to your frustration. I breed and show Labradors. This is the #1 breed for poorly bred dogs in the country. My dogs are all American and/or Canadian champions. I do OFA hips, elbows, CERF eyes, Optigen eyes, EIC testing and OFA hearts on all dogs that will be bred. And, I expect the same from any stud dog I use. I belong to the parent club and local lab club. It irks me to see dogs being bred that should not be. Granted....the biggest problem is that hobby breeders could never keep up with the demand for puppies. I don't know what the solution is, expect to EDUCATE! People need to learn the difference. You won't find any dog bred by me in a shelter, as I am responsible for them cradle to grave. Their microchips are registered to me.
