Walt Disney World XXXIX - Star Wars Half Marathon - The Dark Side - April 2017

Episode I - The Trials of Running

Pre-Trip

First, a small and short brief background on myself. I grew up in Kansas City and currently live in Tulsa. I have been to both Walt Disney World and Disneyland a ton of times. Like all of you, I am a huge Disney fan. A long time ago, before the Lucasfilm acquisition, I have been a Star Wars fan, as well. I have recently gained the hobby of running and this would be my second RunDisney event. What better combination, Disney World, Star Wars, and RunDisney with the Star Wars Half Marathon - The Dark Side.

My first RunDisney event was the 2016 Star Wars Half Marathon - The Light Side. That was my first half marathon. For that run, I had very little training. Like all I did was some briefs runs on the elliptical. I basically walked the entire race and finished with a 3 hour 26 minute time, which is a 15:43 pace. However, I really enjoyed running through some of the Disney parks with the Star Wars theme. This led me to want to do it again, but with training. I gathered some of the same friends and more to do the Star Wars Half Marathon - The Dark Side. I decided to be a little more ambitious and sign up for The Dark Side Challenge, as well.

We signed up right when registration opened in August 2016. However, I didn't start training until December. Not only did I train. I made it a goal to lose a ton of weight, as well. Before training, the following were my average paces for various distances: 5K - 11:20; 10K - 13:00; 13.1M - 15:40. My weight before training was 228 pounds. After 4.5 months of training, running, P90X, dieting, change of lifestyle, my weight was 166 pounds. My new paces were: 5K - 7:30; 10K - 7:45; 10M - 8:00. Quite the significant difference. It is amazing what a change of lifestyle will do.

After 4.5 months of intense training, I was ready for The Dark Side Challenge.

Below are a few pictures of some of the runs that I did throughout all of my training for the Star Wars Half Marathon - The Dark Side Training:

Episode II - The Journey Begins

Friday, April 21st, 2017

This would be my 39th trip to the Walt Disney World resort. Hints the XXXIX to the title of the thread. With those trips, I have gone with various family members, friends from college, friends from work, girlfriends at the time, and more. The following are some of the key itineraries for the trip:

Players:
6 friends from work that were running
Parents and my brother

Length of Stay: April 21st - April 29th

Resorts: Boardwalk Villas and Caribbean Beach

Before arrival, I was super anxious to get to Disney and be injury free for the run. I also happen to worry about everything. Like everything. Even a month out, my biggest concern was the weather. Especially with recent history of RunDisney races with the 2015 Wine and Dine Half Marathon being reduced because of weather and the Half Marathon for the WDW Marathon weekend being cancelled. On the 15 day forecast, I noticed there was a change of thunderstorms in Orlando for the Half. This got me worried. Luckily, the forecast cleared up within the 10 day forecast. Matter of fact, the weather went the opposite direction with a heat advisory. Fortunately, I felt the weather for the run and the entire trip was great. Again, I worry about everything. However, the weather in Tulsa was not so great and had a 100% chance of strong storms. This worried me about the plane leaving and having travel delays. Luckily, the plane took off before the storms became rolling in. Matter of fact, a lot of flights were cancelled later that day from the Tulsa airport. I was worried about travel delays because we had to get to the Expo in time to get our bibs for The Dark Side Challenge.

Overall, no one in our group had any travel issues even with the bad weather in Tulsa. The first day was dedicated to checking in the hotels, getting my annual pass updated, going to the expo, and going to Publix for some running snacks and drinks. On a side note, I love to use Uber for everything. I strongly believe it is a cheap travel option and very convenient. You can be in your hotel room, order the Uber, go downstairs and it will be there and you will be at your destination in under 10 minutes. It is great and only like $6-10 a ride.

This episode was basically here to lay out the ground details of our stay and any travel issues.

I was signed up for the cancelled WDW 1/2 marathon this year (would have been my first) I signed up again for next years (my newe first!?!). . . so in the meantime, I am spending all non-running hours reading everything I can about runDisney events to help curb any anxiety!!

I can't wait to hear about how yours went!

Yea that is what worries me about the weather. For any typical race, a cancelation stinks in general. But a RunDisney run it is worse because there is so much travel and planning involved and anticipation. The RunDisney runs are by far the best runs that I have done. Good luck on training for the half. I would highly suggest training for it too. I have done both ways. Training for it made the run so much more enjoyable.

Following along, excited to hear how it went! That's some amazing weight loss and time improvement!

Episode III: A Runner's Paradise

Friday, April 21st, 2017

Let me start out by saying that running is a relatively new hobby that I have acquired. Outside of the two RunDisney events that I have attended, none have really had an expo attached to them. Granted my other races have just been either a 5K, 10K, or 12K. Back in January 2016, I attended my first RunDisney event, the Star Wars Half Marathon - The Light Side. I had no idea what in the world to expect from the Expo. Once I got in there, I had no idea what any of the stuff was used for. However, this time was a little different with some running experience. I had much more appreciation of all of the items that were put on display. Now, I had to hold myself back because I didn't want to break the bank at the Expo.

My first goal going into the Expo was to get my bib number. After getting my bib number, I wanted to exchange my shirts for a size down because my entire wardrobe has shrunk because of my weight loss. Luckily, I got the last exchanged shirts for my size. Next, I wanted to grab a few things. At the RunDisney store, I ended up getting a Dark Side Challenge shirt that I ended up wearing for the Half Marathon, 3 race Mickey magnets for 19.3, 13.1, and a 10K. I got some storm trooper socks to wear during the runs. Finally, I got a customized magic band for 13.1 miles because I liked the Darth Vader design way better then the Imperial Guard on the 19.3 design.

Overall, I thought the expo was pretty awesome. I haven't been to the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex since I saw my Kansas Jayhawks play in the Orlando Classic back in 2014, so it was fun going back there. They had a cantina area set up with special alcoholic drinks and I think a special brewed beer. But I didn't want to consume any alcohol before both the 10K and the Half Marathon.

For the rest of the day, the remaining part of our party were all slowly getting into Orlando. One of my friends and I assured our annual passes were working by going to the International Gateway at Epcot. We went to an offsite place for dinner at Seadog Brewery. Finished the day off at Publix, we got a ton of granola bars, Gatorade, and water.

Yea nothing too exciting this day.

The race fell on our 10 year wedding anniversary too- and my husband and I were going to run together. Planned a whole weekend away without the kids for the first time in YEARS. We kind of have the luck that this kind of thing happens to- not horrible stuff. Just really annoying after all that planning. We definitely had a fun weekend away anyway though! He is staying home with the kids next year so I can go back and achieve my goal.

We trained well for the first no-go around, so I am planning on it for the second! I want to be able to finish still standing and able to function (fairly) normally. I expect soreness and such, but I don't want to feel like I can't move at all!

Ouch! I hope for the best next time!

Episode IV: The Star Wars 10K

Saturday, April 22nd

With so much adrenaline, I could not fall asleep. It was like the anticipation of Christmas morning. 4.5 months of training came down to the next two days. I didn't fall asleep until like 12:30am. I ended up waking up at 2:45am. I did my usual routine of taking a nice hot shower. I put on my layers of clothes, which doesn't make sense with the potential heat advisory, right? My clothes consisted of: compression shorts, compression calf sleeves for both legs, compression ankle sleeve for my right foot, compression stormtrooper under shirt (because why not?), stormtrooper socks, Empire Strikes Back shirt, Nike grey shorts, and Nike running shoes (my 1st string shoes). I had three snacks set: 3:15am snack - 1/2 Complete Cookie; 4:15am snack - Natural Valley Honey & Oats bar; 5:15am snack - Chocolate Chip Cliff Bar.

Within our group of runners, only 2/7 of us were doing the Dark Side Challenge. One of us was staying at the Boardwalk Villas and the other at Caribbean Beach. We didn't have any plans to meet up before the run because we had a feeling it would be chaotic. I ended up getting on the bus at about 3:40am and arrived to the Ticket and Transportation Center at 4:00am. Somehow, when I got off the bus, I ran right into my friend. Out of the like 10,000 people there, the chances of that happening had to be slim. Anyway, he was in corral A and I was in corral E for the 10K. With my current pace, I should be in corral A, but my proof of time at submission was not as good, so I was in corral E. At the beginning, we did some stretching and weren't really concerned with getting pictures with the characters.

I am not sure what advice to give on getting pictures with these characters. The characters were at both the start and finish entertainment areas. They were the same characters and were not meeting throughout the run. If I remember right, the characters were: Boba Fett, Kylo Ren, Darth Vader, and Captain Phasma. They had picture displays from Rogue One and Jabba The Hutt. My advice if you are a fast runner like corral A or B. Save these characters for the finish because you will get there before the other runners thus a shorter line. Probably go from the rarest or your favorite to the more common characters. Other runners, I would suggest maybe splitting up the characters between the start and finish. I did not stop for any characters on either run along the race. If I remember right, the characters along the race were: Ewok, Chewbacca, R2D2, Darth Maul, stormtroopers, Ezra, Sabine, and some other displays.

I think I got into my corral at like 4:30am and was in the upper middle. I am guessing there were multiple waves for corral E. But I was at least in the first wave for corral E. The pre-entertainment was cool. They showed various clips and trailers of the Star Wars movies. The DJ had a lot of energy for 4:30am - 5:00am. The hosts were actually the same people that do the pre-NFL Sunday entertainment at the ESPN Club at the Boardwalk, which I personally thought was funny since I am used to them talking about the NFL and not Star Wars. On a side note, the best costume I saw was some dude dressed up as George Lucas and he was a runner. It got a chuckle out of me.

Ready, set, go! With being in corral E, I didn't start the race until 5:55am, so 25 minutes after the first corral. Matter of fact, my friend that was in corral A was more then half way done with the race by the time I started. My personal goal was to take an easy for the 10K, almost make this a warm up for the Half Marathon, the next day. My goal was to be between 55:00 - 59:00 finish, which is like a 8:52 to 9:30 pace.

Mile 1-3: Even with weaving around so many runners, the amount of adrenaline in my body led me to like a 7:25 first mile. That is not a pace that I wanted to maintain for saving my body for the next day. The first 3 miles was pretty much all on World Drive. One would think that would be quite boring but there were quite a bit of entertainment along the way. First, it was cool running through the Magic Kingdom parking gate, it just felt magical. Second, they spaced out characters, picture displays, and giant TVs with Star Wars clips along the way.

Mile 4: As Anakin Skywalker would say "This is where the fun begins!" Yea, I actually said that out loud while running. Mile 4 was through most of the Hollywood Studios backstage area and Hollywood Studios. I believe some of the 501st legion were in the Fantasmic area. On a side note, in comparison to Disneyland, the half there did have a ton more 501st legion and that is because it is located in California.

Mile 5: This ran along Crescent Lake aka the Epcot Resort area on the side of the Boardwalk. I would say the side of the Boardwalk was one of the major bottlenecks.
