Walt Disney Co. Already Expanding Shanghai Disney Resort, Says Bob Iger

That article was from June 14th and I think it was posted in the News round up thread. There really isn't anything in there saying what they are doing to possibly expand.

I'm guessing Autopia for late 2016, and Toy Story Land for early next year. I think that's what Iger said.

So.... we're already paying for budget overruns there through cutbacks.. and now they're looking at expanding? Why don't they just shut down the US parks and dump all that money saved into that place over there?

That "we're paying for it" and "blame Shanghai" is a bit of a misdirection on the part of Disney employees trying to preserve some self worth.

They have been in the
Midst of large scale attempts to cut costs/services for several years...and rather "they don't think we're worth it"..."blame Shanghai" is born of that...

The reality is that that money wasn't gonna be spent on pay, benefits, and elaborate new things in the domestic parks...

Maybe "some" of it would have...but not much. Right now is not really the time to complain either...it's fairly healthy/stable at domestic parks.

I wonder what's Hong Kong's position in all of this. They just experienced financial losses last year, and now there's even more focus shifting towards Shanghai. I suppose they want to assure Shanghai becomes a true Chinese destination before addressing its older brother, but still. Even Paris seems more stable these days.

While true cost overruns in China are affecting some of the things in the US. They have scaled back domestically more than they would've if there wasn't cost overruns in China. It is what it is though.

Hong Kong was all set to get a second gate, but then Shanghai changed everything. The new hotel and iron man ride will have to do for now.

I was mostly being facetious ;) However given the large over costs they ran into, the impact it has had on it's US parks (which isn't negligible), and how early it is for Shanghai, it certainly doesn't seem prudent to be thinking of this already; a bit premature. Wait awhile and see what happens when the novelty wears off at least. Though my guess this is a politically-driven move.

Will you please site your source. I have never seen in any official Disney release this information. Thanks

Why would Disney release that info? That would lead to huge bad PR. Disney added $800 million publically for "more experiences" but more experiences were never added. That in itself proves overruns.

You were expecting the PR office to type "sorry...were decreasing costs while increasing the prices you pay..."
I wasn't expecting or thinking Disney would release that kind of information but I keep hearing people state overruns at Shanghai as the reason for cutbacks at WDW. If one is not part of the executive suite they would have no idea as to what the budget strategy is. I have never heard anything disclosed by Disney and thought that I may have missed it, so many people state it as fact. The top line for Disney is doing great but what really matters is the bottom line. That is what drives the cuts, there is plenty of money to cover the overruns and maintain or improve the domestic parks. Of course it's only a guess, as is everyone's, but I would be willing to bet that the cuts have to do with executive bonuses.

There's a reasonable correlation to be made that the Paris bailout and the weird relationship and costs with China would lead to a tightening of optional spending at other Disney parks - which are Disneyland and walt Disney world because they pay the bills there...

But I somewhat reject that...I think that Orlando (in particular) has been ripe for slashing for a long time and it will intensify...

The fact is that they have gotten used to getting away with charging higher prices for the same or less product...and once a corporation starts
Sliding down that slope...it's a dangerous An unstoppable path.

I was reading a book about roy e Disney that described that a little in the context of Eisner...and the wheel has spun since.
