In March 2005 a DISer started the inspirational, Walking to Disney Challenge thread. Hockeychic and her DH were walking to Disney. Well, not literally, of course! They measured the length of travel from their home to All Star Movies and challenged themselves to walk everyday until they had covered that distance.

Some 25 pages and 360+ posts and here we are, at the dawn of a new year and a new challenge. :sunny:

The challenge: Go to www.mapquest.com, or other mapping website or software for obtaining driving directions. Insert your home address and find the directions to a point in Walt Disney World Resort (or any Disney destination). Now, use that distance as a goal and plan to walk that far in a given amount of time. Your deadline could be the end of the year, or perhaps the check-in date of your next Disney trip.

Show the DIS your commitment to the Walking to Disney Challenge

Track your miles/kms and post your progress here whenever you reach a milestone.

My challenge: I want to complete my 1023.1 mile trek to the gates of the Magic Kingdom. I hope to make it there by 6/11/06, the day we are scheduled to check in at Pop Century Resort. I have 590 miles to go!

Good luck to anyone and everyone who wants to participate!

IB, I will continue my trek. I'm 17% of the way. When I first started, I figured that I would reach WL by January 2007. We'll see exactly when it lands. My goal....to keep working at this, to get back into a fitness routine, and to get back to ONEderland. I love the clippie, but it would make my siggie over the guidelines, so I'll stay with the original for now. :)

Hey there,

Glad to see this is still going. DH and I plan to get on track in 2006. We are cruising out of Miami in late October so we will walk or bike the milage to get there.

Good Luck to all.

Kim

Just this week I was thinking about joining this challenge! I had already looked up the mileage and everything!
I have to walk 1145 miles! I'll be going to Disney the end of May/beginning of June. I'd like to walk/bike there by thent. I can do it!
Thanks so much! This has me pumped to go to the gym and get started tonight! :cool1:

OK, I will give it a try! I looked at the miles and it is 1033, so I don't know....but I will try!

I need and want to get into a regular walking program so I want to try this. I am lucky though, I only live 581 miles from Old Key West (my favorite place to stay). Thanks for running this challenge.

Count me in on the ongoing Walk to WDW. I haven't gotten any exercise in the past three weeks. I'll get back into karate and will sign up to use the college gym this week. I need to get a lot done in the next 6 weeks leading up to a major overseas trip then I can start planning for my next Disney trip ... can't go again until next Halloween.

I have decided that I will try this, but I am going to Disney's Hilton Head Island resort. I really don't think I will make it to WDW, and I am not sure I will make it to HHI, but I have a better chance for that.

So I have 777 miles to go! If I make it there, I will start working my way to Orlando!

DJ

Please add me to the challenge. My goal is 892 miles and I plan to be there on Dec. 22, 2006. Thanks and good luck to everyone.

I did the calculation to reach Magic Kingdom by the date we plan to check in. I need to walk 3.68 miles EVERYDAY to make my goal! I hope this winter continues to be mild so I can get outside to walk - I really don't like walking on the manual treadmill I have.

Count me in too :wave2: We are doing a step challenge at work, in 12 weeks we will be up to 10,000 steps/day. So I have figured out how many steps (approximately) to walk to Boardwalk Villas, my home in Disney. It puts me at about 5877 steps/day to get there in a year. Now that doesn't sound too bad...

Alrighty then.
943 miles.
And when I get to WDW I guess I'll walk another 900 miles inside the MK!
I want to buy a pedometer tomorrow because I do a LOT of walking at work...don't I get to count that?

You sure can count your steps at work arkansas mom! Wear a pedometer all day long - you'd be amazed how far you really walk in a day.

I'm off to a slow start. I'm a fair-weather walker and it rained over lunch yesterday or I would have gone outside (not like I don't have a treadmill at home) and added another mile.

well, I just challenged the family today...if we(each not all together) walk 1013 miles to Pop Century by October, then we will go to WDW for 2 weeks...if we do not make it then we only go for 1 week. Wish us luck!!!

I would love to join the challenge... I checked out that it would be 1036.25 to Boardwalk Villas :cloud9: from my house. I really don't know how long it will take me I will have to keep track for a week and then let you know.

I have been tracking from the 1st so I should know this weekend.

I better get walking :cool1:

Please count me in. I tried to post to this thread a few days ago but got "server too busy" so my post didn't take. We are cruising in Oct. and we are staying at he Pop Centry the night before so I checked the mileage from home to PC and it is 1,260 miles. I'm not sure if I'll get in that many miles by Oct. 20 but I'm sure going to give it a try. I am seriously thinking of doing the WDW 1/2 marathon next year and this challenge will be a great way to train for that. I did get in 4 miles since try to post the other day so I am 4/1,260 wow I only have 1,256 miles to go :rotfl2:

Welcome aboard Lisa and Cheryl. :flower3:

I'm off to a slow start, cold weather and all. This week is supposed to be unusually mild - upper 40's some days, which is very nice for walking. I wish the daylight lasted longer so I could go outdoors after work.

Add me in! It is 971.7 miles for us. My husband is going to walk with me. He suggested that pehaps we make it really difficult and try to walk to DL or Tokyo Disney. :scared1: I told him we can try this first, then maybe next year do one of the farther destinations. :)
If you are not walking on a treadmill, how do you keep track of the miles? We like to walk around our apartment complex with our dog, but the apartments really are not that big. Do you use a pedometer and figure out how many steps are in a mile?
