So we are going july 7th - 14th. We have three kids ages 6 and younger. I wanted a set that me and my hubby could have. one for him and one for me. We are staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. I wanted something for long range without using costly cell phones. anyone recommend one that can go that distance?

Also, look for one that has the sub channels so that way you can be on one of those. I will check and see what kind my husbands are. We bought ours at Gander Mountain, but Dicks also has alot of variety too.

What kind of range are you talking about 1,2,3.....10 mile. Will you be in the same park as DH or at a different location?

I would like to talk while we are in the same park
and also if possible for one of us to be in the park and then the other be back at the AKL.

In the parks, we found soo much interference and cross-talk on all the channels (and sub) that we stopped using them and went back to the cell phones.

How "costly" are your minutes? Will you really rack up $50-$100+ in minutes that you'd spend on the radios? Also consider that most brands that advertise "10 miles" are talking open-air, with no obstacles....

Little known fact; RF is best blocked by water. Humans are 90% water. What are you surrounded by in the parks?.... :) Cell phones at least run off high towers.

Has anyone been lucky with (moderately priced) radios?

I don't think any of the will work while you are in a park and someone has gone back to the hotel. Like another poster stated even if you have a 10 mile range walkie talkie, you aren't going to get the 10 mile range.

Unfortunatley the cell phone is looking to best for you. However, for in park use get a 5-12 mile range one, that has the sub channels (as mentioned by pigletof4). Eventhough it says 5..12 mile range, there will be several obstructions that will cut the range down drasticlly. The range is based on open locations with no obstructions.

WOW. guess my only option is cell phones. or text message maybe. what about in the parks. is there a walkie talkie that works well inside the parks. I know there is a lot of interference but looking for a good way to keep in touch without cell phone use. can you call your hotel room from one of the park phones at no cost?
found out my hubbys cell phone carrier will not work in Orlando so now what!! UGGHHH

My BIL spent about $150 on a good pair for a trip a few years ago. He tried for a few days to use them, but it was difficult to hear. In addition, no matter what channel/sub he used, he kept getting beeped and picked up other walkie-talkie conversations. He finally just turned them off. Just way too many people using them I guess (4th of July week).

Last I remember, Orlando was a major city with great CDMA and GSM. :)

How did your husband manage to find a carrier/phone that won't work there? lol
