Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

For Bill and anyone else that might need a little more support during your training, there is a new sport.

http://www.anwa.us/index.php

This might be a good training option for a while untill you are completely recovered from knee or hip surgery.

I have used a walking stick to hike and often see people hiking with the poles.

Goofy Panda:hippie:

Get good poles, if you are going to depend on them, though! Otherwise you will fall on your nether regions....they are near Nordic...somewhere. My geography isn't all that great, but I know they are near by.:rotfl:

Good morning Walkers.

There is plenty of room left for more WISHers on the team miles game if any of you are intrested that haven't signed up yet.

This is my last day of rest. I will do some easy walking tomorrow morning then Monday get back to my regular walking schedule. Unfortunately it's going to be cold as a witches heart for the foreseeable future.

How is everyone feeling? Getting the kinks out and about ready to get back at it? Jeanne I love how excited you were to start that Marathon, I hope you stay motivated that way. It was very inspiring to be around you, the positive energy you were radiating was wonderful.

Nancy you are a brave lady, you never quit, even when you went through that spell where you were feeling so yucky.

Robert needs to be locked up for his own safety. You did it Dude but dang you like to push the limits of sanity and endurance.

Stacey was our power girl, she flew through that marathon. Are you thinking Goofy for next year? I bet you have a great 5K time.

Erica and I are planning on the 5K and the Marathon for next year.

Connie, we missed you princess.

Bill I hope your training and diet plans are sucessful this year.

Maria, you are just and cute and bubbly in person as you are on the boards, it was such a pleasure meeting you.

Kim, I'm sad we won't see you in Oct for ToT. Are you doing the marathon next year? You and Mike are wonderful and fun to hang around with.

Lynn I hope you join us more often this year. It was fun hanging out with you and Scott this trip.

I did it!

I got off the sofa, drove 3 miles to the gym, JOINED the gym, and walked 3.5 miles.

The good: I made it! My workout playlist ended within a second of my workout on the treadmill--woohoo! I walked for 65 minutes (including cool down) without stopping. I remembered to use good form and didn't hang on the treadmill, kept my head up, looked around to practice looking for Mickey Mouse, and kept my arms bent and moving (low, without chicken arms) the entire time.

The "needs improvement": forgot my inhaler; remembered why I hate working out when that darn stitch under my ribcage appeared half a mile in; couldn't maintain a 4 mph pace. At all. Forgot that when I get off a treadmill after an hour, it feels like the floor is moving. The gym doesn't have a place to stretch so I had to drive home and stretch on the floor.

Overall, DAY 1 of my getting ready for the May event went well. :)

You are on your way princess. When I walk on the treadmill I start at 3 mph for a lap then 3.5 for a lap before moving up to 4 mph. You need a warm-up to get your legs happy before they will want to do more and go faster.

I start back on Monday with my training, I'll walk a few miles easy at the mall in the morning but more a just staying loose workout than a training walk.

Good luck Duckie and welcome to the walker hangout.

Um, Panda.... that WAS after I warmed up! I was walking at 3, then 3.3, then 3.5, then 3.8. then 4, which lasted for about 2 minutes... I spent most of it at 3.5 and 3.3.

But it's more than I walked yesterday! I just took ibuprofen and showered. My ankles feel tight so I'm going to keep trying to stretch them and make circles....

Thank you for all the encouragement!

You did great. It's only January by the time Summer rolls around your legs will be stronger, slimmer and so will your butt. Way to go!

I still have not worked out since the 1/2 but I went for a massage today, wow she found some knots and boy oh boy I needed a 2 hour nap after that. If you can afford it, have someone massage your legs - should you get knots. She did my arms and neck because that's my problem area but when I first started to work out, I had her do my legs a couple of times, wow what a blessing that was.

Good for you - getting of the couch, it's your first step to 13.1 miles!

So today was my first trip back to the gym since doing the Mickey, did 4 miles on the elipical. Then I went to Weigh Watchers, I need to lose those extra pounds I put on this past year. I'm a life time member and it seems the only way I can lose is if I am accountable to them and pay the $11 each week. So I hope between now and the Minnie I lose the weight.

Dave-- Thanks for your support when I was yucky, plus you were having to help Erica. I didn't even know she had stopped and sat down until you said something. What a girl, if I would have sat down I don't think I would have gotten up. Jeanne just keep motivating me to keep on going, really if it hadn't been for her I think I would have quit at the end of AK. She probably would have finished earlier, if she wouldn't have had to deal with me.

Densie-- That massage sounds wonderful. I am actually thinking of getting a SPA pedicure for my tired feet.

I saw someone on the rail trail with those poles and wondered what they were doing. Of course you have to consider that some things you see on that trail are strange anyway. First time I ever saw someone walking a goat was on the trail and runaway cows. I just thought it was some reddneck trying to cross country ski and didn't realize there was no snow.

ms.mightyduck--- Getting off the couch and joining a gym is half the battle.

Robert---How is the weather in Disney? I'm so jealous you are still there.

Who y'all callin' red neck, Darlin' Nancy, darlin'??? How ya ever gonna get a goat to go anywhere if he don't walk? Harder 'n heck to carry one! And runaway cows are usually called a stampede! :lmao:

I sure hope it warms up soon. Bitter cold is very bitter for walking. I don't have asthma, but I am sure my doctor would say, "don't do it, if you can help it!" :rolleyes1 So, I just hop on my stepper and climb hills!

Nancy- Thanks. I'm pretty proud of myself. The woman at the gym said she does half marathons, and she's sure I can be ready for May.

Denise- I LOVE massages! If training is another excuse to get one, count me in! I confess to trying to convince my husband to go to massage school to be my personal masseuse.... :rolleyes1

Good morning guys and pretty princesses.

I went to the mall and walked a little bit, couple of easy miles, waiting for Erica to get off so we could do breakfast.

We are making a supreme effort to get our eating back on track. The holidays and back to back vacations, along with the "Nervous Eating" while preparing for the Goofy left us both to pudgy.

No more comfort food, especially late evening. NO BEN and JERRY'S!! This morning my veggie omlett with no cheese or holinday sause, with toast and hashbrowns did not include the sasuage patties. Sunday is our bad eating day with breakfast out and Pepper's Mexican dinner.

We will start our walk training back tomorrow with a 5 miler in the mall, it's 8 degrees out. Erica's toes are still sore, mine are ok but my achillies is still singing. Before the marathon next January I'm going to get a pair of shoes another half size larger just for the long distance. I do fine from 20 miles and below but the 26.2 always leaves me with a couple of sore toes.

How is everyone else doing?

Hi!

I posted in the weekly thread. My ankles are stiff and I was trying to figure out if that's a shoe problem or a need to train more problem (my shoes were fitted at a running specialty store).

I was also trying to figure out if I should go every other day to start since I can't walk Tuesday and Monday is supposed to be a day off. I didn't walk today.

And I hear you on the food--only soft food for me and no hot/cold until after Tuesday, which has kept me from being too crazy (although it may put a damper on my playoff eating today).

Greetings y'all!

It's hard to believe that it was one week ago yesterday and today....:tiptoe:

Congratulations to everyone who made it to the start line. That's a big accomplishment in itself!

Many :cheer2: for the new folks going for the half and full next year. You can do it! :cheer2:

As for me, I have a blister the size of Texas on the ball of my left foot. New area for a blister. My usual spots ended up ok. Go figure. :teeth: What really amazes me is the fact that I was NOT sore at all after the race. I'm in shock, really. Usually, my shins hurt, my calves hurt. I just got lucky. I'm very grateful.

As for the race itself, I did get dizzy and weak several times in the last half. I'm not sure if it was an electrolyte inbalance, lack of proper nutrition, female thing :sad2: or what but Kareneast helped pull me through. She had a bag of goodies that cured everything. THANK YOU, KAREN!

My intent was to hang with Jeanne and Nancy but I knew that I would have to go a little stronger at first as I tend to weaken toward the end. I'm somehow made it and I really owe a lot to the encouragement of fellow WISHers throughout the course and during the weekend itself. Without your support, the event wouldn't be nearly as fun and I don't know that I could have made it. THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!

As for next year, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Originally, Steve and I had talked about doing the PF Chang's Rock 'n Roll Half in Phoenix. It's a week after the Disney events. However, I'll miss the DIS excitement and it just couldn't be as much fun without the DIS team. I may have to do the Disney half and cheer for the full. I have as much fun doing that (or more) as I do going to the parks. :goodvibes

Also, I won't be doing ToT this year. :sad1: Steve has to work so we're thinking about doing the Race for the Taste instead. Anyone thinking about doing this?

Keep up the good work, everyone! I haven't been able to walk or run due to the blister but I have logged in some miles on the recumbent bike and elliptical. I hope to get back to training soon as I have a marathon relay to train for in March and a half or two in April.

My ankles get a little stiff every now and then. You may just need to do some exercises and stretching after you walk or run. One that might help (and will help the shins) is to do the alphabet with your feet. Uppercase and lowercase letters. Do this a few times a day.

By the way, someone needs to come to Arkansas and whack me on the side of the head. I'm thinking about going Goofy for 2010. I must still be on a marathon high because I keep thinking that Goofy is calling my name while flashing the darn goofy medal before my eyes. Hopefully, this high (nightmare) will wear off soon and I will realize that half-marathons are the way to go....for me....for now.

Well I have taken a week off of training but will get back into something this week.

Honestly, I didn't think the 1/2 was bad at all, my thighs hurt for a few days and I had a small rash spot on my back from my water belt. My hand is almost healed from the fall in mile one so I'm almost back to "normal".:rolleyes1

If funds are right Miranda and I may do it again. We need a goal to keep us training. I will watch this thread and other to make sure it's not full and make our decision.

Today Miranda and I joined Weight Watchers. We both need to lose weight and she won't go shopping for wedding dresses until she loses some weight and I have a couple of really nice "mother of the bride" outfits I can wear - eventually.

So this will be a different work out year for us with a few goals to achieve.

Besides, I'd miss being part of the Windwalker team!

Have a good rest of the day. I'm Listening to the Pats game, if I watch, they lose so I have it on in the background and won't watch with my eyes.

Hi Susie--- I was wondering how you did. There are so many threads going on it is hard to follow how each person did. The last I saw as we exited out of Epcot, glad you found someone to help you through the race. From mile 18 on I found the race really difficult. Thankfully I had Jeanne to keep me going. Alone with some encourging words from Dave and Robert. Sorry about your blister. I was lucky that I wasn't bothered by them. Good luck on making whatever you decide. I'm planning on doing the Donald. The Goofy is filling up fast so you won't have much time to decide. I don't think I could survive 2 days of LW to ever do the Goofy.

Denise--- We can help each other with WW. I have tried to be good both yesterday and today, but it is hard to cut back from what I was eating. I was surprised that I didn't feel bad after the Mickey. I could actually walk around without alot of problems that evening. No real soreness on Monday and was back to work on Tuesday. I'm not sure why that was, but was grateful that I wasn't sore.

Dave--- My sneaker size have grown an entire 1 1/2 sized since I started all this. And I might have to go up another size as the toes are close to the end of the new sneakers I bought. Soon I will not be wearing any women's size sneakers.

It is very cold in PA with a high of 21 today. So stayed inside and did WATP 3 mile video. It has been ages since I did that video so it worked alot of different muscle.

I went through my WW cookbook and have all my receipes for the coming week. I love their receipes, the only down size is the prep time. Made the zero soup so had that for lunch and will take to work tomorrow.

Nancy
