Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

Good morning Walkers.

The heat right now over most of the country where WISH Team members live is pretty bad. We have had 3 straight days of over a 100 degrees.

Exercisering in the heat builds mental toughness and strength. But you have to be careful and smart about it to. It's a no brainer but drink water all during the day. Tea, coffee and soda doesn't count. Make sure you drink water or fruit juice, the juice is high sugar so don't drink to much of that unless you are wanting to gain a bit of weight. Flavored water is good if you get tired of the taste of plain old water.

Another thing about the heat is that you lose salt as you sweat so a little salt on your food is necessary if you are not eating processed foods that are high in salt already.

I read in another post that someone had slow walk times because they were walking on grass. You can't walk or run fast on grass. There is more resistance and the softness absorbs the push off power. The push off with your back foot is where walkers get their power.

I'm off in a bit for my workout before it gets to hot, it's allready 80 ad will be 90 by the time I'm done.

Everyone walk strong and walk safe. Feel the power.

Well last night was my night off from walking. Getting ready for the 5K race tonight. Thankfully here the heat has broken - at least for today. Race at 6:20 PM and the temps should be in the high 70's but low humidity

I have our corporate shirt to wear but my husband Mark is making us stickers of the logo in my signature for our "training for the 1/2 marathon".

Not sure if we'll take pictures but will post if I do. We are a group of 24 and I'd like to power walk the whole thing but I like to "visit" with some of my friends and they are the slowsky's so we'll see.

Have a good day all - keep cool as best you can.

Denise, where has Miranda? I haven't seen her post for a while. Good luck with the race. You are right it will be more fun to have a mobile party than to go all out. That's what we are doing for the ToT.

I did my 4 miles on the hills this morning. It was easier and faster than yesterday. I think I'm acclimating to the heat. I need to because I race in the heat and I can't go full out if I'm dying from the heat and humidity.

Walk strong.

Dave:hippie:

Miranda is a pastry chef and has been working all crazy hours. I did see her briefly last night and she will be doing a combo tonight, walking then running.

Because of the cool temps, the runners are expected to break records tonight. :confused3

I'm all set with walking it.

Will post "our" results tomorrow.

Good luck Denise with your race tonight.

Last night I did 6 miles on the TM. I had to split it up because of stretch class. So 3.5 before and 2.5 after stretch. My knee ached a little but not to bad.

Dave--- 4 miles on hills in the heat, you are the man.

I thought maybe some of you would be interested in this regarding the Fat March. I receive the newsletter from about walking that Wendy Baumgardner writes and she had comments about the Fat Walk but this is from a comment from her blog from the one contestant that quit.

Yes, It’s me the one you’d love to hate from Fat March, but you wouldn’t hate me if you knew the truth about the show. Reality TV is a gimmick & they will do everything they can to brainwash you into thinking whatever they think will keep you watching. What you saw on the 1ST episode was a twisted version of what really happened & sadly for me it was at my expense.
“FAT MARCH IS A FAT LIE”
When they showed you I appeared to quit, wasn’t even the same day I left & you see me sitting on the side of the road. Editing trick! I left the show the day after, walking for 11 hrs straight, close to 10 miles, more than any one on the entire show had walked in one day, up to that point. The cast, crew & producers cried & praised me for it like I was a hero. They wanted me to be the underdog of the show, I ended up w/ blood clots under my toes, toenails hanging off my feet, blisters between my thighs. I had to go so, the team wouldn’t lose 10k & make up my miles if I didn’t finish the next day. I quit for them and the end the constant pain I was in.
I don’t think walking over 500 miles is a realistic weight lost approach for any obese person. It is ridiculous. I thought the show was going to be like the Biggest Loser and it was like the Amazing Race meeting Fat Survivor.
If they had been honest about what to expect before I went on the show I never would have gone, but it was too late and I signed a contract so I had to try it. It was the biggest mistake of my successful life. Steve is a fake and really didn’t give a damn about me he was playing tv and he knows it.
You don’t take someone weighs almost 300 pounds and make them walk almost 20 miles in 3 day with no preparation, no training, just some phoney “I know you can do it speech”. If I had left in an ambulance people would have felt sorry for me, but I was stupid and walked away before it got to that point. Maybe if I had died on the show someone would have realized that the show was exploitative and abusive. Sleeping on the freezing ground in the rain, or on a hard wood floor in dire pain, & being told you are too fat for an air mattress is not trying to help people. Losing weight was the challenge, I never agreed to be a boy scout too. They lied to me and defamed me because I wouldn’t stay there and be their underdog story.

I watched a little bit of the show between commericals on "The Closer". I actually felt sorry for these people. It is a diaster waiting to happen.

Have a great day everyone.

Nancy

Nancy I agree and the sad thing is that some overweight people, who might end up being sucessfull half and full marathoners, will think that they can just sign up for a marathon and lose weight while doing it instead of putting in the required training.

I have a real problem with offering people money to suffer for other peoples viewing pleasure. I have since heard that there is a WISHer in the group of contestants, "BigBen", or Micheal on the show. I saw this on the other part of the WISH section.

Dave:hippie:

Dave--- Interesting about BigBen. I only saw bits and pieces so not sure which one he was. I will admit I do like some reality shows like Dancing with the Stars and some of the A&E and Bravo shows, but know that it is all in the editing. I have not really watched the Biggest Loser as it is so unrealistic how they show those people losing weight. It just reinforces to people there is a quick fix for weight loss.

Got to get busy at work.

Nancy

I don't think we get that show here in Canada....?????

I have done more training this year then since I was a teenager and I haven't lost any weight since about April or May and I think that was just because I gave up pop....which I am now drinking again.... I was thinking I was really doing something wrong as I wasn't losing any weight but I am just happy getting healthier.....I would still like to get rid of 10 - 15 before my 1/2 in Sept just so I don't have that extra weight to carry around 21K.

Kim

Denise: Good luck during tonight's event!!!!! :cheer2:

Kim: don't feel bad....I have not been able to lose any weight either. With all the mileage i've put in since the beginning of the year I should be a stick, but the more I exercise, the more my body fights to hold on to the weight. I've been to many docs over the years and it's always the same story....healthy, but heavy. It's been a problem all my life and now according to the charts I am clinically obese. That really gets me bummed because I am doing the best I can.

About reality shows......I have not seen the one about Fat March, but my son is an aspiring filmmaker who has worked on several different reality shows when in need of cash. According to him, they are greatly edited for drama and viewer appeal. Contestants and workers alike must sign very strict agreements about not revealing anything that goes on behind the scenes. The penalties for breaking them are quite harsh. Anyone who signs up to be a contestant is really opening themselves to all sorts of ridicule and bad press. Sad, but true....this is what sells airtime. And as a big Survivor/Amazing Race fan, I'm just another guilty member of the viewing public.

Kim--- I am another one who needs to lose weight, but with all this increased training it just doesn't happen. I am a lifetime member of Weight Watchers and the only times I can lose weight is if I really cut back on the amount of points that I eat. Then I am starving and have no energy. It's a never ending cycle.

Jeanne--- I forgot about Amazing Race which is one of my favorite reality shows.

Nancy

It just doesn't seem fair does it. All this exercise and I should be HOT!!!!! Oh well I just have to settle for being hot because it is pushing 100 degrees....:lmao:

I had a co-worker who was a marathon runner and was quite a bit overweight and I always felt bad for her cause when she mentioned all the marathons she did she would get the attitude comment :YOU run marathons".....

However, I am not helping the cause with my can of pepsi on my desk and a handful of pringles....:confused3

Kim

Another walker here trying to inject himself into the convo..

Welcome, Mr. DB.......please just jump right in!

Kim: I would kill for a handful of pringles........!

Welcome DirtyBunny, cool name. Be advised that some of us just "ain't right". But we do have the hottest chicks over here on the walking thread.

Good Morning Walkers

Well we did the race last night. Miranda went up with the recreational runners and did very good. She ran the whole thing - way to go Miranda. Mark and I did our powerwalk and our times were good we were at a 12 -13 minute mile. The reason that the time is not set in stone is that while we were on the path we came up to my son who was not doing so great. He started too soon and burnt out along the way - gotta train the boy a bit better. I felt bad that he was being left behind so I gave my stop watch to Mark and he was on his way without me. Nick and I finished the race together a few minutes behind the rest of them.

Had a co-worker that wanted to beat me and she was disappointed that I gave up the race for him. You know, I was racing against the clock not anyone else. I didn't even know she had that in mind but Mark and I both saw her powerwalking then running ahead of us, we would continue our pace and pass her. We're turtles - head down, concentrate and keep the pace. That was a bit wierd.

We have another race in September that I may do to see how I stand up to the times, pace etc. I feel that I really need to work on my endurance now. Times are ok and if I can maintain that rate in January I'll be fine so working on stamina for now.

Have a good day - Friday at last.

Welcome to the team Mr DB.

Lots of great and awesome people here, also please pop over to the weekly thread, lot of support on these boards.

Denise: Congrats on your race last night!!!

Tomorrow will be a test of my willpower. We are going the the Annual "Taste of the Danforth" It is set up like the food and wine festival, pay a couple of bucks to try lots of different food, mostly greek food but there are the odd other booth set up......yummy!!!!!!! However, it is alot of walking......:thumbsup2

Hope you all have a great weekend!!!
Kim

Congrats Denise.....great job, even with the little bump in the road! That sounds like an awesome pace.

My boys (27 and 22) got home early this morning.YAY! The older one took the bus from NYC into PA and then they drove down together. Did I mention....like Dave not being last....we are going to Disney World! YAY, YAY!!! I'm bringing the Garmin, so at least my intentions are good.

Welcome Mr. DB.

Denise--- Good job on your race last night. How old is your son?

Kim-- I love going to Wine and Food Festivals. Have some greek food and wine for me. With all the walking you can count it as XT. My area has alot of local wineries so we do have several Wine and Food Festivals each year we can go to. Plus the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is held annually at a winery which goes on every weekend from now until late Oct.

Jeanne--- Glad the boys made it home safe and sound. Are you flying or driving to WDW and what day are you leaving? Have a great time.

Last night did pump class and then struggled for 2.5 miles on TM. I should have gotten to the gym before pump to walk, but was late getting home from work. I am really worn out after pump class so doing anything after that class is a major effort. My legs and shoulder are sore this morning. Today is a rest day and I hope that Sat I can do my LW on the rail trail.

Kim when things like that come up enjoy it, you can eat and taste and have a wonderful time, what you do in one day isn't going to make or breat your efforts. When special things come along you have to grasp the memory. That doesn't mean you can do that every day but make things like that a reward for the other times you are following a healthy life style.

Denise, that was a wonderful pace you and your hubby had. You guys are really coming along. Congrats to your little one Miranda for running the whole race to.

Today ids a rest day since I have a race also tomorrow. This is the one where walkers start 5 min after the runners, MMM see how many runners we can catch. The temp here yesterday was 104 with high humidity so I'm thinking a few will be slowed by the heat. I don't see a lot of others out training in the heat like I do. I guess that means they have good sense.:upsidedow

Have a wonderful day y'all.
