wake up 3am to reserve dining?

This is probably an unpopular opinion but we thought the malasadas were better at Makahiki than Leonard’s (we did them both less than 48h apart). Unfortunately I was so full by the time the actual breakfast arrived I ended up taking as delicious French toast back to the room in a container.

We don’t care about the character greetings but considered paying to go back just for the food. 🤣 I wish there were other places to get the malasadas on site (Disney, if you’re listening, you could take us for $10 for a donut and coffee (x 2) each morning…and we already have the free refill mugs!).
For some hardcore Leonards lovers, yeah that's probably an unpopular opinion. For Aulani, I think it might depends on the day, some days can be amazing and occasionally there can be a miss? Leonards is consistent, that's all they do all day everyday so I would also hold them in higher standards. To me, food is subjective and we all just wanna enjoy what we like. As long as no one keeps arguing with me that who is better and force me to admit I'm wrong, it's all gucci!

They’re available at Olelo Room :) Disney emailed me Feb 23, 2024 to let me know:

Fun fact! The ʻŌlelo Room offers fresh malasadas—a Portuguese donut enjoyed in Hawaiʻi—for sale every morning on the Grab & Go Menu. They're only available from 7–11 a.m.and while supplies last, so make sure you stop by for this delicious breakfast treat.
OMG they listened to our feedback!! Yay! I told our sever that they NEED to sell them somewhere at the resort and I also put that in the survey, pretty sure many guests also did! That's great news!!

Thank you for taking the time to actually give them the feedback! This is a win for us all.

Re: difference of opinion, we’ve only had each type once, so it makes total sense that actual experience could differ by day to day (and how fresh of a batch you’re getting and preferred sweetness level, etc)—very happy to keep an open mind.

Now that @MsChristy12 has successfully advocated for malasadas to go, it’s up to the rest of us to find additional dining enhancements and coordinate comment cards!

haha I can't take all the credit, I'm sure hundreds of guests have voiced the same thing!

The one I had at Makahiki though, it was damn good! Our server actually said he likes them better than Leonards too, and it's A LOT closer for him to eat one! lol! :rotfl:

If I could get free malasadas at Makahiki everyday my figure would start to resemble a malasada. 🤣

DH and I share your unpopular opinion! 😆
We didn’t care for Leonard’s at all. Too dense. I like them fluffy and airy 😋

West coaster here. haven’t gotten up early to book Makahiki character breakfast since Covid reopening. Since we usually do a weeklong stay with no solid plans, I would just go down and ask at the check in desk if they could accommodate a party of 2 that morning or any other morning. We have always gotten a table during our stay.

My trip is more than 30 days out, I just wanted to see if it was still crazy….. yup…. malasadas, off the hook, or breakfast in the room will work just fine for me.

We’ve got lanais booked…. I’m going for 0 stress on the trip.
You DISboards friends would like to know how the malasadas to go works out (especially if they are easy to acquire and if they are delivered to you warm).

Is offering to make reservations for people against the forum rules? Free of charge. I'm up at 12AM Hawaii time most nights and made reservations for myself and family friends. Obviously not guaranteed but I'd just thought of trying to do something nice.

There's some bad advice going on here (though it's understandable and entirely Disney's fault).

The reservation website is broken, plain and simple. SOMETIMES it works, but very often it just... doesn't.

On 5 separate occasions over 3 trips, I've searched and found zero availability on the website but when I called and talked to a cast member at the restaurant, there were multiple options available for me to choose from.

Do you call the restaurant direct? What number do you use ?

I couldn't figure out how to call the restaurant but I called the more general phone number and they transferred me. The cast members who always end up helping me are the ones actually working the Makahiki check-in stand.

So we woke up at 3am ( calling from Vancouver) last night to make a brunch reservation. When my husband was speaking with Aulani earlier in the week the CM told my husband that brunch was usually booked within 15 mins. We tried online, all was going well, but then it didn’t process our reservation to the last step and wouldn’t let us do anything after that so we called. We couldn’t get the exact time we wanted, but close. So a good result but a bad nights sleep. I should also mention the original CM told my husband that it was best to do online because they don’t have a lot of staff to answer the phones at that time.

West coast is the worse time zone for Disney planners. We wake up at 3AM for WDW, 5AM for DVC, and 3AM for AUL. 😭

DCL at 9PM is nice though.
