My wife and I have half-marathon bib numbers of 50,XXX. We have never run a race/half marathon before, so neither of us submitted a time. I should finish in 1:45ish based upon my training. It sounds like I will be passing people like crazy based on the above responses of estimated times/bib numbers/corrals. Is this a safety concern for RunDisney?
It isn't so much a safety concern for them as an annoyance for you. If you are in the very last corral, you are going to have a hard time finishing in 1:45, IMHO. Plus, all that bobbing and weaving takes a lot more energy out of you than you would think. Can you find a 10K to run before race day? That would be my suggestion.
I agree, this is more on the runner than the race. You best bet is to try to get into a Santa 10k, if you can. Otherwise, I can tell you from experience that the grassy area about 1-2 feet off course to the left is a well groomed and smooth stretch path. You will have a speed advantage over the corral you start in along the grassy lane. Just try to hit the same foot fall spot as the runner in front of you and if you see a hip dip, avoid that spot. You will definitely not be the only one taking this route. While it has a rick, I find it less risky that the possible foot tangling in the first mile of the race. There is a bridge right at mile 1 that will neck down and slow the pack up some. Once on World, you have a wide and open road until mile 4.2. This is just after the TTC. The course necks back to a one lane road. Again, stay course left. A sidewalk will appear a few hundred feet in front of the water bridge. The course will slow up dramatically due to the upslope coming out of the underpass. Stay on the walk and you will pass hundreds. Note, on occasion Disney Security will post a cast member trying to clear folks off the walk. I usually run by, citing the 18-24" drop off. The final issue you will face is just after MK along the single lane stretch from the cast member entrance through Poly. I again hang course left to avoid tangling with the cones on the right. In the old days we could weave in and out of the cones, but there seems to be more traffic on the live side of the road now. Once past the Poly, you should be OK
