I have a 5 night stay at BLT booked for next year (on the back of a week at Riviera). I noticed the other day that 4 of those 5 same nights were available at Copper Creek and jumped at the chance because we have never stayed there and know how hard studios are to come by.

I waitlisted the 5 nights of which 1 wasn't available. Was this stupid? I am not exactly sure how waitlisting works, would it have been better to book the 4 nights that were available and waitlist the 1 night that wasn't?

In my head by waitlisting all 5, I have 'reserved' the 4 that were available and am just waiting on the 1, but I might have this totally wrong.....

Yes- it is always recommended to book the nights that are available if you are ok with a possible 4 nights at CC and 1 night at BLT if your waitlist doesn't come through. You have a better chance of a waitlist coming through for 1 night than 5. Unfortunately, your thinking is wrong. You don't have the 4 nights reserved with 1 waitlisted- you have all 5 waitlisted- and it won't be matched until all 5 nights are available at once (it doesn't match 1 night, then another etc)

Thanks so much! I live and learn. I wasn't sure if by doing it this way, I would lose all 5 nights at BLT and gain 4 nights at CC and therefore having 1 night with nowhere.

If the opportunity presents itself in the future, you could do this:

Use the modify feature to change the BLT reservation from 5 nights to 4 nights at CCV. Then reserve the missing night at BLT. (It should still be there, but if not check back every few minutes because sometimes it takes the system up to 20 minutes or so to release cancelled nights back into the system). Then waitlist the missing night at CCV. Set up the waitlist to replace the BLT night.

The risk is someone else (or the waitlist for BLT) grabbing the night at BLT before you can get it reserved. IMO, that is minimal, but it could happen.
